About NHTSA recalls

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issues a recall when a vehicle, equipment, tire, or child seat does not meet a federal motor vehicle safety standard or has a safety-related defect. Manufacturers must notify owners and offer a free remedy — typically a repair, replacement, or refund.

Recall campaigns get a numeric identifier in the format YYV###, YYE###, or YYT### — e.g. 24V100000 is the 100,000th vehicle (V) campaign of 2024. We mirror NHTSA's public dataset and surface every campaign at /recalls/{campaign-id}.
