About VinDecoder
VinDecoder is a free vehicle identification number (VIN) decoder service that provides comprehensive vehicle data from official government sources. Our mission is to make vehicle safety and specification data accessible to everyone — car buyers, vehicle owners, researchers, and automotive professionals.
Our Data Sources
All data on VinDecoder comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the official U.S. government agency responsible for vehicle safety. We use six NHTSA data sources:
- vPIC Database — Vehicle specifications from manufacturer submissions (130+ data points)
- Recalls Database — All safety recall campaigns issued by NHTSA
- Consumer Complaints — Safety complaints filed by vehicle owners
- Safety Ratings — 5-star crash test ratings from NHTSA testing
- Investigations — Active and closed defect investigations
- Manufacturer Communications — Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs)
Why Free?
The vehicle data we provide is public information maintained by a government agency. We believe everyone should have free access to safety-critical information about their vehicle. Whether you are buying a used car, checking for recalls on your current vehicle, or researching safety ratings, this information should not be behind a paywall.
Accuracy & Limitations
Our data comes directly from NHTSA APIs and is as accurate as the source data maintained by the government. Vehicle specifications are based on manufacturer submissions required by federal law. However, please note:
- VIN decoding covers vehicles sold in the United States from 1981 onwards
- Some data may not be available for all vehicles
- This service does not provide vehicle history reports (accident history, odometer readings, title status)
- Always verify critical information with your dealer or manufacturer
Not Affiliated with NHTSA
VinDecoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by NHTSA, the Department of Transportation, or any vehicle manufacturer. We simply make publicly available government data more accessible and user-friendly.
