VEHICLE FAILS TO CHARGE. Receiving error message that the vehicle fails to accept a charge. I've attempted charging using 3 separate chargers and all fail. This issue has been in service at numerous dealerships with no resolve. I was able to charge previously at a reduced rate but now the battery will no longer accept a charge and gives me an error message.

Steering rack started failing: did not return to center out of slow corners. Basically I could do hands-free circles in a parking lot. Dealer confirmed the steering rack was bad and replaced it under warranty. Out of sweeping corners this can be a safety issue as it only got worse over time. No warning lights nor other indication of the problem.

While waiting to turn left at a light and driving in "L" (one pedal) mode, I started to release the break in anticipation of oncoming lanes clearing, as I lifted the pedal the car lurched into the intersection. The Bolt normally accelerates very gently in L mode when no break is applied, but does not lurch forwards like this under normal conditions. The breaks did work, and I was able to stop, but I was now in the middle of the intersection and slightly encroaching into oncoming lanes. I tried to accelerate to pull through, but the car did not respond. After several second of frantically pushing the accelerator, the car slowly and jerkily moved forward and cleared the intersection. My Chevy dealer says this is a known problem with service bulletin "Chevrolet TSB 19-NA-220". In my opinion this is incredibly dangerous and should have been recalled. However, there is no recall that I can find and outrageously Chevy will not cover this manufacturing defect under warranty as they specifically exclude wiring harnesses due to past issues with rodent damage, and they are hiding behind that rule.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The vehicle’s steering system (specifically the electric power steering assist and/or steering rack assembly) began exhibiting stiffness, resistance, and intermittent loss of assist while turning. The steering system is still installed on the vehicle and is available for inspection upon request by NHTSA, GM, or a dealer representative. ⸻ How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The loss or inconsistency of steering assist makes it difficult to maintain control of the vehicle, especially at low speeds and during turns. The steering intermittently binds or jerks, creating a risk of collision with other vehicles, pedestrians, or fixed objects. Because steering is essential for directional control, any failure or unpredictability in the system poses a direct safety hazard to the driver and others on the road. ⸻ Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. The issue has been observed by the owner and noted by a GM Certified dealer during inspection. The symptoms (binding and abnormal steering resistance) were reproduced during driving and while stationary. The dealer acknowledged abnormal steering behavior but initially denied warranty coverage despite the vehicle being sold as Certified Pre-Owned. ⸻ Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Yes, the vehicle was inspected by a GM Certified dealership that completed the original certification inspection and later reviewed the steering concern. The component has not been examined by police or insurance representatives at this time, but GM and NHTSA inspection is welcomed.

High-voltage battery failure left Bolt EV immobilized after recall fix: Our 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV (VIN: [XXX] ) became completely immobilized on [XXX], due to high-voltage battery failure. The vehicle previously underwent all recall remedies, including a full propulsion battery replacement in May 2023, but less than two years later the same issue has reoccurred. This failure left us stranded and unable to operate the car. Loss of propulsion without warning presents a serious safety risk, particularly if it were to occur while driving at speed. Out of concern for fire risk, the dealer (Colonial Chevrolet in Milford, CT) parked the disabled vehicle approximately 500 feet away from other cars and structures. The dealer diagnosed the failure as HV battery pack malfunction and confirmed the pack requires replacement. The vehicle remains in their custody and is available for inspection upon request. GM Customer Assistance has denied two separate repurchase claims (case #[XXX] and #[XXX]), despite the prolonged immobilization and repeated delays. The car has been inspected by Colonial Chevrolet and GM representatives. Despite prior recall service and battery replacement, the Bolt is inoperable again, raising concerns that the recall remedy was ineffective and that other Bolt EV owners may face the same hazard. No warning lamps or error messages appeared prior to failure. The vehicle simply would not start on [XXX]. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The steering wheel fails to return to center after turns. This requires constant manual correction to re-center the vehicle, which increases the risk of overcorrection or unintended lane departure. There are no warning lights or noise, and the issue does not appear to be related to alignment, tires, or pressure. Many other Chevrolet Bolt owners are reporting the same behavior, pointing to a potential defect in the steering gear or rack. This is an very serious safety hazard that could result in loss of vehicle control and death. GM has not issued a recall or service bulletin, and repairs are extremely expensive.

The car has 80,000 miles. The backup camera has always had an intermittent issue after rain but now has stopped working. I cannot see properly to back up. I also understand that the company has known about this for a while, but has done nothing about the issue.

Steering would not return to center after a turn only for LEFT turns, even at higher speeds. Steering would be sticky at low speeds. Resulted in challenging to predict cornering particularly for left turns. Manufacturer replaced steering gear under warranty. OK now.
STEERINGJuly 12, 2025
I first noticed an issue with the steering wheel not returning to center after a turn, and also when in a slow sweeping curve that the wheel would hold the position and keep in the turn/curve unless corrected by manually turning it straight. I had new tires installed on 11/6/2024 and the alignment was checked and was correct. The tires that I chose turned out to be way harsher riding and noisy then the OEM's so I went with a different tire that was more EV specific. Nothing changed in regards to the steering issue. I checked online at the Chevy Bolt EV forum site to see if anyone else was having this problem and it appears to be a common issue with these cars. The steering rack should not be failing after 33K miles of use. It creates an unsafe condition when the steering does not return to center after a turn, or proceeding through a curve, and I'm sure it will only get worse as time/miles go by. I have a 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV that does not do this.....yet....but I have less than 2k miles on that vehicle.
SERVICE BRAKESJune 16, 2025
Right brake caliper sticking intermittently, causing massive vibration in steering wheel and a caliper too hot to touch. In doing research on the Chevy Bolt forum, there were many people talking about this issue. In fact, GM issued a TSB about this issue, but when I entered my VIN in the GM site, it said that my VIN as not impacted; however, it was! I suggest that the NTSB do a further investigation to include all VINs affected with this issue. I had to spend several hundred dollars for a repair shop to replace the right brake caliper. Since the repairs were completed, I've had no issues whatsoever. Thank you.

This car several times while driving has shaken and then shifted into neutral. I have had to pull the car off to the side of the road during normal vehicle operation. The car will then not shift into drive. There is a warning sign "Conditions Not Correct For Shift." The first incident was March 2023. The vehicle was towed to a Chevrolet dealer and the power inverter module was replaced under warranty. This next occurred in December 2024. The vehicle was towed to a dealer again and reprogrammed. The cost was $400. The vehicle was fine for two months and about 1,000 miles when it happened again in March 2025. This time the dealer states that the engine harness needs to be replaced for about $1,500 (not covered under warranty). These incidents all occur while driving the vehicle (it has happened while approaching an intersection and once while going through an intersection).

On January 8, 2025 the battery in my car began to fail and had a message in the display to take it to my dealer. I drove it to the nearest dealer on January 10, 2025, about 10 miles (Billion Automotive in Iowa City.) While driving the power steering and braking began to fail. The dealer said that GM would need to replace the battery. It has been at the dealer for 2 months, and I was told today that it will be at least another 2 months before GM will replace the battery. The car is well under warranty.

The steering doesn't return to center when making turns on occasion. This issue can cause an overcorrection, this does seem to be a fairly common issue seen in various forums and appears to be a very expensive fix.
STEERING,SUSPENSIONFebruary 3, 2025
Steering sticks and does not return to center in sweeping turns. Clicking noise over bumps in very cold weather (may or may not be related--steering issue most concerning). Most prominent at higher speeds (for example, getting off of the highway) but occurs at any speed. Once you turn the wheel, it will return slightly then stick in place. It takes a small amount of extra force to correct it back towards center. During these occurrences it may continue to stick or may begin to act normally after the "correction." I would be alright with providing the vehicle for inspection and/or demonstration if requested. The first time this happened, I was driving along twisting roads in northern Michigan. The occurrence caught me off guard, and I traveled over the lines. Personally, I was not in danger but if there was no shoulder or more traffic I feel this issue has the chance at being very dangerous. I am now aware of the issue and can keep it in mind while driving, but I've also noticed recently that the small "jutt" from correcting the wheel could cause an issue on snow and ice. I have not had a dealership look at the vehicle, as it seems to be a very common complaint about the Chevy Bolt, with a new part number being sold for replacement steering racks. I am willing to have it confirmed if needbe. There are no warnings of this occurrence. If the conditions are right, there is a very high chance it occurs. It started roughly around the 60,000 mile mark, and has been getting slightly worse over the past year. My vehicle is now at 98,000 miles.

While traveling at highway speeds, my Chevrolet Bolt (2020 with 20K miles) made a clunking noise followed by a loss of speed. The clunking noise had previously been reported to the dealer, but they were not able to identify any issues at the time. During this incident, however, the car ultimately lost all speed, forcing me to pull over to the side of the highway. This sudden loss of propulsion posed a significant risk to my safety and the safety of other motorists, not only due to the loss of power, but because it happened at an interchange where multiple highways are connecting. I was left on the side of the road waiting for a tow because the car was inoperable. Prior to this sudden failure, there were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms, aside from the previously reported clunking noise. After this incident, the dealer diagnosed the issue as the one listed in the technical service bulletin, which states that "the terminals may not have been perfectly aligned during installation at the vehicle assembly plant." Unfortunately, this issue was not covered under the warranty and currently this problem is not a recall item for the Chevrolet Bolt.

This car has One Pedal Driving (OPD) which allows you to slow the car to a stop, without using the brake pedal. The car activates the brake lights, based on sensors in the car which sense the deceleration. In this mode, the brake lights are NOT activated by any pedal action by the driver, only by the vehicle's actual deceleration. This all works great EXCEPT the fact that once the car comes to a stop, the brake lights turn off. This is obviously a hazard for any stopped driver and there are anecdotal cases of rear end collisions caused by the lack of brake lights. This problem is fixed in later models of this car. I presume that this issue could be fixed by a simple software update.

About one month ago (ironically at about the same time Enel X pulled out of the US and Canada) we noticed a burning smell when we charged our Bolt, at home, using our JuiceBox type 2 charger. At first we thought it was the car, but nothing appeared amiss. We charged the car 3-4 times during this month time period, and the smell was present every time. After the last charge (one week ago), I checked the NEMA receptacle and discovered it was partially melted and one prong of the plug was coated in black "tar". I turned off the breaker, removed the receptacle cover and the black wire was burnt and the plastic connector housing behind the receptacle was badly burnt. The charger, cord and plug, and receptacle are all available for inspection (although we plan to have the wiring repaired and a new charger installed soon). I believe if we had continued to use the charger it would have resulted in a fire in the garage - obviously a safety concern. I am unaware if this problem has been reproduced by a dealer or independent service center; however, I read in Consumer Reports other JuiceBox users have reported fires they believed were caused by the charger. At this time the charger has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representative. A licensed electrician is scheduled to inspect and repair the wiring within the next week. Aside from the smell there was no warning or message (the car charged normally). The smell began about a month ago, and was only present while charging. Note that a licensed, bonded electrician installed the wiring and plug receptacle for us in 2020.

The cameras for the 360° view, front to sides and back, keep going out. It's been a repair now five times and it still came back. The dealership is running out of ideas of what to do to fix this. I think it's just a known issue that they can't seem to fix. The main issue is the front camera goes out completely and then on mine, the left side camera goes out and is just black where the front camera will be green and not functioning. I think the module that processes data isn't properly made to handle the amount of video inputs coming in and it bugs out. It seems that it's worse when the temperature swing is too much. Currently it's the temperature of hot above 90° the car gets very warm obviously.

I narrowly escaped a home and vehicle fire when my vehicle charging port received extensive damage from a Mustart SAE J1772 Level 2 EVSE Portable Electric Vehicle Charger. The charging plug overheated and experienced meltdown. The Mustart unit became so hot that my vehicle charging port charred and fused to the Mustart charging plug. The charging head became very brittle, cracked exposing seals, and leaked oil down the vehicle charging port. Even though the charging head is now melted and broken, the charger does not register a fault, and still shows a green light if plugged into the wall. My first warning of a problem was the smell of burning plastic, oil leaking and what looked like smoke coming from the charging head. I immediately unplugged the charger from the wall, but could not remove the charging head from the vehicle charging port because it was fused to the car. I tried to shift the vehicle out of Park and into neutral to move the vehicle away from my home, but the vehicle would not shift with the plug still attached. Even though unplugged from the wall, the Bolt kept beeping, indicating an issue with the charger/port. Fearing a physical short in the charging circuitry of the vehicle, the burning smell and potential for fire, I forcefully removed the charger from the vehicle by pulling on the charging handle with full human stregnth until separated. The plastic parts of both the charger and charging port were burnt and broken. My Chevy Bolt was repaired by a licensed technician at the dealer, who blamed me for the charging fault and damages. GM alleged the damage I caused to the charging unit during removal was pre-existing, causing a loose connection and short circuit. GM refused to repair the damaged charging port under warranty, claiming user error and abuse. I sent a request for refund and reimbursement of damages to Mustart on 8/05/2024 and will update this complaint after their official response.

The cameras around the car collectively stop working intermittently. When I try to access the cameras or put the car into reverse, I get a black screen with a camera with a line through it. It happens right after it has rained and remains that way for several days. There are not any warning lamps that come on during this time. This situation makes me feel extremely uncomfortable as I have difficulty backing the car up and ensuring that there is not any incoming traffic that I may run into. The dealer is replacing the harness but there is no known changes that will prevent this in the future. $3,000 repair bill. I have asked for the defective harness to be returned to me for examination. This is a major safety concern as in my case, the Chevrolet Bolt would not move either in forward or reverse (Note: the other electrical systems and battery continue to work. This failure happen in rush hour traffic and the vehicle was nearly hit by passing cars. There was no warning that the propulsion would entirely shut down. The car has only 20k miles and the gear steering box failed and had to be replaced. This is apparently a very common defect where if the part fails the dealer said the steering will lock up and potentially cause a crash. $2500 to replace it is a huge hit and kicked in just out of warranty. Chevy should admit to either bad design if this key part goes bad with minimal use/mileage or defective manufacturing by its part provider since the issue apparently stems from the grease within the gear box separating or breaking down. In short, Chevy is well aware of a dangerous defect in its Bolt product line that could lock up steering but will not fix it. It is only a matter of time before someone gets killed, if it hasn’t happened already. NHTSA should investigate reported Bolt accidents where vehicles go off the road.

While approaching a stop light, the car experienced a loss of propulsion and gave me an error message about it. The car told me to pull over as soon as possible, however, in busy morning traffic, this was impossible. Even if I'd had space to pull over, the car came to a stop and locked up with the error message "Conditions Not Right For Shift." It had to be rebooted several times before it could be shifted into neutral long enough to be pushed to safety. From there, it then had to undergo a hard reboot to return to a state where it could be shifted into Drive. A dealership service center confirmed the problem under as described under service bulletin 19-NA-220. There were no warning lamps or other symptoms of the problem. The car is available for inspection upon request.

The steering wheel does not return to center. When turning and then releasing the steering wheel to come out of the turn, the wheel stays where it is, causing the car to continue to turn. You must manually steer the wheel back to center position. This always happens when steering. It is not a one-time or intermittent. This is not safe as it makes the car go off the road. There is no warning light or alert from the car itself that something is wrong. I purchased the car used from a used car dealership and it is doing this when I bought it. They confirmed it. To my knowledge, no one else has inspected the vehicle's steering. Looking online, there seems to be many other Chevrolet Bolt owners complaining/experiencing the same steering problem.

My 2020 Chevy Bolt EV Premier has had intermittent problems with the Rear Camera Mirror going to a black screen and shutting down. After re-seating the wiring harness, which didn't fix the problem, they replaced the wiring harness, and then when it continued to happen, they replaced the rear camera. This cleared things up for a while, but then intermittently, it started to happen again. Over the past week, things have become worse, and the mirror assembly would turn off and get extremely hot. It was so hot to the touch, almost at the stage of burning my hand. I have not gotten a resolution from the Chevy dealership as they are too busy and won't be able to diagnose the issue for a week and a half. I am concerned that this is a safety issue that might result in a vehicle fire.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEMFebruary 23, 2024
I recently purchased a 2020 Chevy Bolt. I was never told that the battery could catch on fire and that they have a range limit. My work has banned this vehicle from their parking lot. The current recall for the battery requires software that reduces the battery by 80% which interferes with my driving schedule. This is a huge safety risk parking a vehicle that could potentially light on fire. I talked with GM and they can't guarantee that the software will detect if the battery has an issue.

On Monday,[XXX], I got in my car to go to work and the car messages on my dash stated "Propulsion Power is Reduced", "Service Vehicle Soon". I was able to drive to work but noticed the defrost/heater was not working. I called the local Chevrolet Dealer and scheduled an appt for Friday at 8:30am. This car had already had a recall performed earlier in 2023 that limited my car charging to 80% but never converted to allow full charging after 6200 miles. I drove home with no /defroster/heater and plugged in the car charger monday night. On tuesday morning ([XXX]), the car had not charged at all overnight. It was suppose to charge to 80% (approx 170 miles). When I drove home that evening, a torrential rainfall occurred. My windshield fogged up but since the defrost/heater wasn't working, I had to constantly wipe the windshield with a rag. I thankfully made it home after 6pm and now noticed the car charging was limited to 30%. This is why the car didn't charge on Monday night. The dealership was closed, so I called first thing Wednesday morning to tell the dealership that I needed to drop the car off today ([XXX]) because it was unsafe to drive and I might have to tow the car in because of the very limited charging allowed. An inspection of this vehicle has found the steering to be binding. The car is only 3 years old and there is no logical reason to justify the need to replace the steering gear. If others are reporting this issue, which I'm guessing they are, I think a recall is warranted. The steering binding is a safety issue, and if it further or fully binds up it could cause an accident. I understand that it could also reduce my ability to sense road traction conditions and make fine adjustments.

On Oct 1, 2023 I drove about 5 miles from home to Menards. It was a sunny day. I went to leave and turned on my car and both display screens were blank. Like they were unplugged. The important screen is located behind the steering wheel and tells you your speed, engine problems (if any) and turn signals. The other tv screen just has heat/ac info, radio info, etc. I turned my car on and off 6-7 times in Menards parking lot. I left different amounts of time in between tries... up to 5 minutes. Nothing worked. So I drove home with blank screens. I stopped at a Taco Bell and tried again. Still didn't work. It was like both monitor screens were unplugged. This has happened a few times in the past. About 6 months after I bought the car. The screens went out during a car wash. Champion Chevrolet in Avon Indiana told my it was probably humidity and don't go to car wash. It happened a year ago on a rainy day. In the past, I only had to turn the car off and on once and the screens would work. This time I tried 6-7 times n two different parking lots. I drove home. Plugged it in to charge and it worked perfectly the next day. Weird and scary.

Although the NHTSA website now reports that my vehicle is longer the subject of a safety recall, NHTSA Campaign Number 21V650000 was not resolved by the software update that Chevrolet installed on my vehicle on June 26, 2023. The high voltage battery on my car failed only 65 miles after the new software was installed. When the newly installed software detected a problem with my car's high voltage battery, the driver information screen on the car's instrument panel advised me that "propulsion power is reduced" and "service vehicle soon." That prompted me to return to my dealer's service department. The dealer that sold me the car and performed the "reprogram field action multimodules coordinated sequence" on June 26 informed me on July 10 that the high voltage battery needs replacement and cannot now be recharged. However, neither the dealer nor Chevrolet can specify a date by which the required battery replacement can and will be completed. I have been told that necessary replacement parts will not be available for "weeks or months." In my case, Chevrolet addressed the risk of fire that prompted NHTSA Campaign Number 21V650000 by confirming the problem and then rendering my car inoperable. I do not believe that NHTSA would consider that an effective response to the recall.

My 2020 Bolt has been under recall for three years due a serious safety issue. The batteries can catch fire and burn up my car and the surrounding area. Seems very serious? GM knew this before they even sold me my car as the earlier versions had also been recalled. It is also hard to believe that with GM selling thousands of new Bolts every year that batteries for the repair are still not available, after well over 3 years. And with the discontinuation of the Bolt, batteries should now be plentiful. What is a reasonable time to wait for a major manufacturer to repair a serious safety issue? 5 years? 10 years? Obviously over 3 years isn't enough.....

I do not consider this being handled in a timely manner and that's my complaint. I don't understand how they are allowed to sell new Bolt EV's and EUV's without having replaced current owners batteries yet, it's been over a year and a half now. The suggested remedy was to limit charging to 90% and park outside away from other vehicles and structures which was an incredible burden in practice. In the meantime they issued a software patch that limited charging to 80% which further reduced usefulness of driving car any longer distances and especially in winter cold temperatures range is greatly impacted.

I live in New England and when we get close to the end of winter when it still snows and the roads begin to thaw some, they typically become pothole utopia. I was driving my car at night with the highbeams on when I hit a fairly decent sized pothole (1/4 wheel sized, 6-12inches deep) at a speed of 35-40mph. The impact was typical of a pothole of that magnitude (complete compression of front strut, little hop) and it knocked out the front highbeams on the side of the impact. The highbeams on the car are a bi-xenon HID projector system, which has a mechanically actuated shutter in the projector housing contained within the headlamp assembly. The mechanically actuated shutter is controlled by a spring loaded rotating bearing system with an ovoid control end which connects to a rotating L-shaped peice of metal via a hole in the ovoid connector. The force of the impact caused the solenoids metal peice to come out of the shutter control end, preventing the actuating solenoid from actuating the shutter. I believe this is a very poor design, as it's clearly not rated to take routine impacts. This issue caused my vehicle to fail a state saftey inspection and the reccomened repair was a total replacement of the headlamp assembly to the tune of $1,100 + labor because the headlamp shipped sealed. Nothing is in place in the assembly to keep the solenoid pin attached to the shutter control arm. I ended up being able to repair the projector assembly myself, using a tar/ gum like substance in the hole on the ovoid control arm hole to hold the solenoid arm in place.

Further I have received no information about when I should expect my replacement battery to become available. GM appears to be prioritizing selling new electric vehicles with their lithium battery supply, rather than fixing a safety hazard with vehicles already on the road. GM has had plenty of time to plan for when batteries would be available for this recall, and yet there has been no public statement about when 2020 Bolt batteries would become available. I would like the NHSTA to apply the needed pressure on GM to make them be more forthcoming about when this safety problem will be resolved.

Box 431301 Illinois, Detroit 48232-5170 Re: Bolt EV Battery Recall #N212345940 VIN: [XXX] Dear [XXX], We are extremely frustrated and disappointed in GM’s performance in replacing the defective and dangerous batteries in our 2020 Bolt EV. It has now been over 14 months since Chevrolet announced the battery recall N212345940 on our 2020 Bolt EV — NOTHING has happened since other than reducing the range and value of our car.. We first leased a 2017 Bolt EV and opted to lease another at the end of the term SOLELY because of the ADDITIONAL range. It is over a 210 mile roundtrip to visit a relative and the 2017 model was barely making it. With a stated 259 mile range, the 2020 model was a good fit UNTIL the battery recall was announced the the safety software update severely limited the battery charging and mileage range. We no longer take the Bolt EV. We believe because of GM’s slow response, we demand $100 compensation for each and every month the car cannot meet its full charge capability, reducing its utility to us. Moreover, we also demand to know exactly WHEN GM will be replacing our Bolt EV batteries. The silence has been deafening. We are considering joining the class action lawsuits against GM regarding this matter. Your response to our demands will make a material difference in our decision to join the class AND whether or not we decide extend our lease, buy the 2020 Bolt EV outright at lease end, or simply return a grossly defective car to GM at lease end, October 2023. My bolt continued accelerating for another few seconds, even that I was pressing brake pedal as hard as I could. I released and pressed brake pedal at least once or twice. Eventually my car stopped. Whole ordeal lasted just a few seconds. I turned the car off. After a minute, I turned the car on again, very carefully. It behaved normally. Throttle and brakes behaved like always. I parked it and will have it towed to the diagnostic or service place. Both my Chevy Bolt and my van (Dodge ram 1500 van 2003) sustained significant damage.

Recall Status: Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available. I have waited over a year for my replacement battery. GM has seen an almost 15,000 vehicle surge in Bolt EV and EUV sales in the most recent financial quarter. And GM has announced increasing new Bolt production by almost 400%. However, thousands of existing Bolt EV owners are still waiting for replacement batteries. GM continues to state that parts are not available. Clearly, with the surge in sales and GM’s plan to increase Bolt production, parts are available. Existing Bolt owners have suffered for years with defective batteries that none of us known if or when a battery will catch on fire and kill us or damage property. I urge the NHSTA to put pressure on GM to replace defective batteries first before selling cars with nondefective batteries. I would not be complaining if GM was not clearly prioritizing profits over people. GM is making nondefective batteries but makes existing Bolt owners wait over a year for a replacement while GM takes in revenue and generates profit. The defective batteries catch on FIRE. None of the batteries existing Bolt owners should have to wait this long for replacement batteries and suffer with anxiety and stress not knowing when or if their car battery will spontaneously ignite.

I have followed all of the interim charging guidelines yet still have significant fear and anxiety that my house will catch on fire while the car is being charged. In addition, there is compromised range to the vehicle due to the modifications with charging and I incur great expense by being forced to use commercial charging stations for routine long distance trips.

We took delivery of a Chevy Bolt from Sundance Chevrolet in May 2020. GM recalled our Bolt for battery fire safety concerns in August 2021. As instructed, we took the Bolt to our local dealer for a temporary safety fix. The software install reduced battery charging to 80%. As a result, our Bolt's effective range has been greatly reduced. The car is not operating as promised. This reduced operating condition has continued for more than 13 months. I also read that we may not even receive a replacement battery when GM finally applies the final remedy, if our battery is examined and found not to be defective: https://www.recurrentauto.com/research/bolt-recalls-told-through-the-data If true, that means we would have lost at least a year of full range without any compensation. We understand that production of new batteries will take time. But this is too long. GM has been unable to remedy this problem in a reasonable time. We have a much harder time understanding why GM hasn't examined our Bolt's battery to determine if is defective. If it isn't, the software battery charge detune could be removed and we could utilize full charge range again. Seems to us GM could implement a battery examination program immediately. If true, NHTSA should require this immediately. We are extremely dissatisfied with this situation, and are hereby formally notifying NHTSA of our complaint.

Pushed accelerator to floor. When I took my foot off the accelerator car continued to accelerate at full throttle for about 15 -20 seconds. Uncontrolled acceleration stopped when I pumped the accelerator. Chevrolet dealer found no fault codes due to a problem with the fly by wire. It appears that when the accelerator was pushed all the way down it somehow got caught and held in the full throttle position by the GM rubber floormat even though the floormat was held in place and attached to the carpet by the fasteners that GM supplies. I had the car and mats for about 2 years before this very dangerous event took place. The local GM dealer cut and removed part of the mat by the accelerator to prevent possible mat contact with the accelerator. However, the dealer could not confirm the floor mat was responsible for the incident.

I received recall notices in the fall of 2021 and at that time I did the suggested changes to the vehicle's menu as to charging percentage etc.. I did not get full use out of the vehicle through the winter for fears of lack of charge during the colder months and concerns about safety. On 3/31/22 I took the vehicle to the dealer, Central Maine Motors Auto Group -Waterville Maine, for the suggested software updates. At first there might have been an improvement in charge allowed, but difficult to tell because with the warming weather it would show more. On or around 6/15 the car behaved erratically while in stop and go driving and I noticed a warning on the dash which said something about propulsion problems and to take it to a dealer. The charge left did not read correctly on the way home and the vehicle would not charge when I got there. I took it to dealer that Monday the 20th with some trepidation for the 50 mile trip not knowing if I had power enough or if was safe to do so. I left the vehicle there and did get a loaner car. Now it is going into the ninth week since then, and besides me calling them to check after 4-5 days I have not heard anything from either the dealer or GM as to updates, timetables or any word at all. This is outrageous on their part and a sad state of affairs if no one in Gov't will step in to help with this situation. I know I'm far from being alone in this. Hope you can do something. -

On August 20, 2021, almost a year ago, my car was recalled and a repair was promised to restore the vehicle to original specifications. This has not occurred to date and all attempts to work with the manufacturer to repair, replace or repurchase this vehicle has been unsuccessful to my satisfaction. I would like the battery and propulsion system replaced to my satisfaction returning the vehicle to factory specifications. It was my understanding that Chevy would not start manufacturing back up on new vehicle production until all cars in the recall were repaired. They have not done this.

I had purchased GM original equipment when I bought my car. They are the factory floor liners that are sold by GM and can be bought at the dealership. The floor liners, for the most part, cover all of the footwell areas of the driver, passenger and rear seating. The following dates are approximate so keep that in mind. In August of 2021, I was attempting to get out of the way of a commercial vehicle that was about the run me off the road. While attempting to do that the accelerator pedal became lodged under the drivers side floor liner and would not release. This caused the acceleration for the car to be at the maximum level, resulting in the car taking off very rapidly. Only after applying the brake at the same time and getting over to the shoulder was I able to shut the car off and dislodge the pedal from the floor liner. Besides being absolutely terrifying it was extremely dangerous. It again happened in October of 2021. It is obvious when you look at the floor liner and it's design. The edge is sticking up just far enough to catch the bottom of the accelerator pedal and becomes very difficult to dislodge, especially when you add in the panic it causes when your car suddenly takes off as fast as it possibly can in traffic. I have contacted GM about getting replacements sent out and they said they are not doing that at the moment. I contacted the dealership where I purchased the liners and they said they were not going to do anything about it.

The Richmond International Airport posts a sign saying Bolt vehicles may not park in their garage or it will be towed at the owners expense. My windshield has a crack the length of the windshield. Safe lite ordered a Chevrolet windshield more than 3 weeks ago and Chevrolet has not been able to provide Safelite a windshield replacement. What alto dealer builds a car and does not stock replacement parts for obvious failure points! There is a recall on the floor mat sold by Chevrolet on the drivers side front. Chevrolet stated that the mat must be removed however parts are not available at this time as replacement. These failures are unacceptable and GM/Chevrolet should be mandated to buy back the car from the user immediately!

I was slowly pulling into a parking lot with my Bolt EV 2020, the car accelerated uncontrollably and in a split second had collided into the wall in front of me. A section of the wall had broken and the car was wedged in the broken section of wall. This is how it came to a stop. The acceleration was so sudden and uncontrollable that even slamming my feet against the brakes did not help slow down and avert the accident. It is notable that the air bags did not engage during this accident. This wall adjoined an apartment complex and a commercial property. It was fortunate that nobody was affected expect for damage to property. But the collision could have easily caused damage to lives had there been people on the apartment complex side of property. I also had a minor less 10 years old in my car who could have been potentially affected. On reading online, I came to notice two recalls on the vehicle. One of them about the floor mats and possible acceleration as the one described by me seems related. I was not notified by Chevrolet about this recall. I could have removed the floor mats had I known about the additional issue. The only notifications I got were for the battery, for which we have followed the safety pre-cautions prescribed. This incident happened less than 14 hours at the time of writing. A police event has been filled (EVENT 21-34-0195) with the Sunnyvale department of public safety. The insurance representatives are yet to inspect the vehicle. There were no warning messages, lamps or other symptoms prior to the failure.

This is a comment on an existing open recall (nhtsa chat said to use this form). Related to the Chevy Bolt recall 21V650. The latest information from GM at https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/home.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2021/sep/0920-bolt.html contains this: "Within approximately 60 days, GM will begin launching a new advanced diagnostic software package that will increase the available battery charging parameters over existing guidance. The diagnostic software will be designed to detect specific abnormalities that might indicate a damaged battery in Bolt EVs and EUVs by monitoring the battery performance; alerting customers of any anomalies; and prioritizing damaged battery modules for replacement. It is GM’s intent that further diagnostic software will allow customers to return to a 100 percent state of charge once all diagnostic processes are complete." I would ask NHTSA to require GM to publicly describe how they tested and verified that this new software will find 100% of battery packs with faulty cells. For example by building a significant number of battery packs with known faulty cells in different configurations and confirming that all packs with faulty cells were correctly identified. This doesn't require the publication of proprietary information, only a description of the verification procedure and results. A previous software update was supposed to detect faulty packs but it did not work so a more robust test is required this time as they intend to use the information provided by this software to determine which packs to replace. Thank you

Not only is Chevy not providing any indcation as to when our car will have its battery replaced (the dealer suggests it could have six months or longer), their proposed interim fixes are completely unacceptable and unworkable. If we cannot charge the car more than 90% and if we cannot go below 70 miles, the effective range has been reduced by roughtly 50% or about 100 miles which frustrates the entire reason we purchased this car (we commute approximatel 120 miles round trip each day). GM has stated in their NHTSA recall notice that my vehicle has the potential to burn down my home and has not provided any sort of fix or even a timeline to fix the problem. The recall states not to charge the vehicle in a garage. My home charger is located in the back of my garage and I do not have the ability to charge the vehicle outdoors without spending thousands to redo my home charging system. My garage is under my two story house, meaning a vehicle fire has the potential to destroy my entire home and kill everyone inside. Again, GM has made no offer to provide replacement vehicles or financial compensation for the home infrastructure changes that must be made to keep safely using the vehicle until a formal fix is announced, and any such repair would require being without the vehicle for weeks at a minimum. In summary, in order to abide by the stated interim recall instructions, my vehicle would be rendered useless as I would have no means of charging the vehicle. It is my hope that the NHTSA holds GM to account for their failures regarding this recall.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKESJune 29, 2021
I have had people following me, and almost hit me when stopped at a stop sign, or waiting to turn left, because the brake lights go off while the car is still being held to some degree by electric motor braking. When driving the car in L mode, one pedal driving, the brake lights come on when decelerating, but when stopped they turn off. The issue is, there is some electrical braking applied when stopped at a stop sign or light, even with no foot on the brake pedal. The car will hold on a slight grade when in L, with no foot on the brake pedal. As far as I understand the law, if there is service braking being applied, the brake lights must be on. I also believe that the electric motor holding back is considered to be service brakes on an EV. I've heard GM corrected this issue on the 2022 models, and I think it should be corrected in the earlier models. Another issue is tall vehicles following close behind me don't see the turn signals because they are in the bumper, mounted very low. I've had people blow the horn at me several times for turning, when they did not see my turn signals. They are working properly, just too low for some vehicles to see when they are close behind. The turn signals are separate and are much lower than the brake lights.

THE 2020 CHEVROLET BOLT EV PREMIER HAS EXCELLENT CRUISE CONTROL, HOLDING SPEED TO WITHIN 1 MPH OF SET SPEED THROUGH AUTOMATIC ACCELERATION GOING UPHILL AND AUTOMATIC REGENERATIVE BRAKING GOING DOWN HILL. THE CAR HAS COLLISION DETECTION AND CAN REPORT TIME TO IMPACT TO THE TENTH OF A SECOND. WHAT IT CAN'T DO IS APPLY REGENERATIVE BRAKING WHEN A DETECTED CRASH MAY BE IMMINENT. IT JUST FLASHES A WARNING LIGHT AND SOUNDS AN ALARM BEEP, BUT DOESN'T TRY TO PREVENT A CRASH, ALLOWING A DRIVER WITH SLOWED REFLEXES TO PLOW INTO THE VEHICLE AHEAD.

LANE KEEPING ASSIST (LKA) AND LANE DEPARTURE WARNING (LDW) ARE IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURES, PARTICULARLY FOR OLDER DRIVERS. THESE FEATURES, TOUTED IN CHEVROLET'S ONLINE AND PRINT ADVERTISING, ARE POORLY, AND POTENTIALLY FATALLY, IMPLEMENTED IN THE 2020 CHEVROLET BOLT EV PREMIER. THE 2020 BOLT EV OWNER'S MANUAL DESCRIBES THESE FEATURES BEGINNING ON PAGE 213. WHEN TURNED ON, LKA IS UNDETECTABLE AND NO STEERING CORRECTION CAN BE FELT IN THE STEERING WHEEL. WHILE LDW MAY ILLUMINATE A SMALL AMBER WARNING SIGNAL ON THE GRAPHICALLY COMPLICATED DRIVER'S DISPLAY, THE MANUAL STATES, 'ADDITIONALLY, THERE MAY BE THREE BEEPS, OR THE DRIVER SEAT MAY PULSE THREE TIMES, ON THE RIGHT OR LEFT, DEPENDING ON THE LANE DEPARTURE DIRECTION.' ON PAGE 215. A SAFE DRIVER DOES NOT WATCH THE COMPLICATED DISPLAY TO DETECT A SMALL SYMBOL TURNING AMBER FROM GREEN. THE LACK OF AUDITORY OR VIBRATION WARNING RENDERED THIS SAFETY FEATURE USELESS. THESE CONDITIONS WERE OBSERVED IN CLEAR DAYLIGHT ON MULTI LANE HIGHWAYS AS WELL AS IN LESS HOSPITABLE CONDITIONS. AS IMPLEMENTED IN THE 2020 CHEVROLET BOLT EV PREMIER, LKA AND LDW DO NOT EXIST, THOUGH BEING USED AS A SELLING FEATURE.

"TTIRS DONT SELF SEAL" I IMMEDIATELY ADVISED THAT THIS WAS DUE TO A DEFECT IN WORKMANSHIP OF THE SELF SEAL TIRES. I QUOTED THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH ON SELF SEALING TIRES FROM THE MICHELIN OE WARRANTY MANUAL. MICHELIN TIRES WITH THE SELF-SEAL LOGO ARE COVERED UNDER THIS WARRANTY. THESE TIRES ARE DESIGNED TO SEAL IN THE EVENT OF A PUNCTURE, AND HAVE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPAIR BY TIRE PROFESSIONALS AT MICHELIN AUTHORIZED DEALERS. THERE ARE TWO AREAS WHERE WE HAVE A PROBLEM. 1) IF THE TIRE FAILS TO SEAL ITSELF THEN IT IS NOT OPERATING AS DESIGNED AND THEREFORE HAS A DEFECT IN WORKMANSHIP. 2) THE WARRANTY SPECIFICALLY SAYS THEY CAN BE "REPAIRED" BY A MICHELIN AUTHORIZED DEALER. I CONTACTED 3 MICHELIN DEALERS AND ALL OF THEM SAID THEY DO NOT REPAIR SELF SEAL TIRES. THE FOURTH MICHELIN DEALER WAS COSTCO AND THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD REPAIR IT IN ERROR. THEY HAD NEVER SEEN A SELF SEAL TIRE BEFORE, NEVER RECEIVED ANY TRAINING FROM MICHELIN ON THE REPAIR OF SAID TIRES, AND WHEN PRESENTED WITH THE PRODUCT BULLETIN ON HOW TO REPAIR THE TIRES STILL REFUSED TO REPAIR IT. AFTER A LOT OF HAGGLING I WAS ABLE TO GET MICHELIN TO AGREE TO PAY 50% . I AM STILL WAITING ON THE EXACT AMOUNT OF THE REIMBURSEMENT AND SO THIS HAS NOT BEEN COMPLETELY RESOLVED AS YET. MY TOTAL OUT OF POCKET FOR 4 NEW NON SELF SEAL TIRES IS $870.01. I COULD HAVE SAVED ABOUT $40 BY NOT GETTING THE LIFETIME ROTATION/BALANCE/FLAT REPAIR.
