VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. CORROSION OF THE AIR BAG INFLATOR'S INTERNAL WIRING, WHICH CAN OCCUR OVER TIME, COULD CAUSE THE INADVERTENT DEPLOYMENT OF THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG. THIS DEPLOYMENT COULD OCCUR DURING VEHICLE START-UP, WHILE THE VEHICLE IS PARKED OR IDLING, OR WHILE IN OPERATION.
Consequence: IF THE CONSUMER IS TOO CLOSE TO AN INFLATING AIR BAG, SERIOUS INJURIES COULD OCCUR.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE INFLATORS ON THESE AIR BAGS.
VEHICLE WOULD NOT START DUE TO A DEFECTIVE BATTERY. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED. THREE DAYS LATER, VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AGAIN. THIS TIME, THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED. HOWEVER, PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK *MR
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND WHEN TURNING CORNERS POWER STEERING FAILED, AND CONSUMER HAD TO STRUGGLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE. AFTER THE TURN WAS MADE, A FEW SECONDS LATER, POWER STEERING RESUMED. *AK *JB
SECURITY SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONED, CAUSING THE IGNITION TO LOCK, AND VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO START. *AK
INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET FAILED CAUSING COOLANT TO LEAK INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THIS RUINED THE ENGINE AND NEEDED REPLACING. IT WAS 3.1L GM MOTOR IN A 1995 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME GL SI. *JB

POWER STEERING SUDDENLY FAILED WITHOUT WARNING AND NO PRIOR SYMPTOMS. SUDDEN TOTAL LOSS OF POWER ASSIST WHILE TURNING LEFT CAUSED MAJOR ACCIDENT. CAR WAS DRIVEN OFF THE ROAD INTO A BRICK RETAINING WALL CAUSING OVER $3,000 DAMAGE TO THE CAR PLUS $350 DAMAGE TO THE WALL. AFTER TOWING CAR HOME, THE POWER STEERING RETURNED TO "NORMAL" OPERATION. POLICE REPORT INDICATES COMPLAINT OF SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER ASSIST TO THE STEERING CAUSING STEERING TO FEEL AS IF IT WERE LOCKED IN POSITION. CAR IS JUST NOW REPAIRED AND DRIVABLE. THIS IS SEEMINGLY IDENTICAL TO SYMPTOMS ON '96 AND NEWER GM CARS AND SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS HURT...THIS TIME. NEXT TIME, WHO KNOWS?! *CB
WHEN STARTING VEHICLE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED INADVERTENTLY.*AK
CONSUMER STATES WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE EXPERIENCED A BLOW WHICH CAUSED THE CONSUMER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE ROLLED OVER MULTIPLE TIMES AS IT TRAVELED DOWN A STEEP ROCK AND SHRUB COVERED EMBANKMENT. THE VEHICLE THEN COLLIDED WITH A LARGE BOULDER WHERE IT CAME TO REST ON ITS ROOF. I REALIZE THAT AT THE TIME OF FILLING OUT THIS QUESTIONAIRRE THAT THIS MODEL IS NO LONGER BEING MADE BY GM BUT I DID SEE I STORY ABOUT THE OLDSMOBILE ALERO HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS AND FELT COMPLELLED TO WRITE. WE HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE BRAKES FOUR TIMES ON THIS CAR. WE BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN 1995 AND IT NOW HAS 61,000 MILES ON IT. THE FIRST TWO TIMES THAT THE BRAKES WERE DONE THEY WERE FIXED UNDER THE WARRANTY BUT WE HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THEM OURSELVES THE PAST TWO TIMES. THE LAST TIME WAS A COMPLETE FOUR WHEEL REPLACEMENT WITH ROTORS AND PADS ALL THE WAY AROUND. WE WERE VERY DISPLEASED WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM AND THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE TO BE REPLACED SO OFTEN.*AK

CONSUMER STATES WHILE TRAVELING AT 40 MPH THE PASSENGER SIDE AND DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. CONSUMER LOST CONTROL AND HIT A CONCRETE BARRIER. VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. NLM CONSUMER STATES THAT THE AIR BAG LIGHT HAD ILLUMINATED THAT DAY. *SLC
