Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINIVANS. THE FUEL TANK VENT HOSE ALLOWS AIR TO VENT FROM THE FUEL TANK DURING REFUELING. CRACKS HAVE DEVELOPED IN THE VENT HOSE. IF (1) THE FUEL TANK IS OVERFILLED, NOT ALLOWING EXCESS FUEL IN THE VENT HOSE TO FLOW BACK INTO THE TANK, (2) THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN ONLY A SHORT DISTANCE AFTER REFUELING AND, (3) THERE IS SUBSEQUENTLY SIGNIFICANT HEATING OF THE FUEL TANK, THE FUEL IN THE TANK CAN EXPAND INTO THE VENT HOSE AND LEAK FUEL.
Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE VENT HOSE.

LEAVES AND OTHER FOREIGN MATERIAL CAN ENTER THROUGH THE COWL PANEL AIR INTAKE DURING OPERATION OF THE FRONT HEATER AND/OR AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM RESULTING IN A BUILD-UP OF MATERIAL IN THE PLENUM. THIS CAN LEAD TO NOISE, ODORS, OR IN SOME CASES, IGNITION OF THESE MATERIALS.
Consequence: A VEHICLE FIRE COULD OCCUR.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN ADDITIONAL HEATER/AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM INTAKE SCREEN.

STEEL BRAKE LINES TO REAR BREAKS RUSTED THROUGH IN SEVERAL PLACES - TWO LINES TO REAR THAT PASS UNDER THE FLOOR AND ALONG THE DRIVER SIDE RAIL AND OVER THE REAR LEFT WHEEL AXLE, AND ALSO AT THE AREA IMMEDIATELY BEFORE EACH REAR WHEEL CYLINDER. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1993 NISSAN QUEST. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER FRONT LAP BELT WILL NOT REMAIN SECURE INTO THE BUCKLE. AS A CONSEQUENCE, IN THE EVENT OF THE CRASH THE OCCUPANTS MAY NOT BE PROPERLY RESTRAINED, WHICH CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND A TECHNICIAN STATED THAT NO PARTS ARE AVAILABLE TO PROPERLY REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 170,000. UPDATED 10/06/09. *LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAS FINALLY BEEN REPAIRED. THE DEALER ORDERED AND REPLACED THE BELT BUCKLE FREE OF CHARGE UNDER WARRANTY. UPDATED 10/06/09

IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT HEARD A SCRAPING NOISE WHEN MAKE A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN. THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 200,050 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,00. UPDATED 04/08/08. *LJ THE SEAT BELTS DID WOULD NOT GO UP OR DOWN AND THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE VEHICLE CUTS OFF. UPDATED

THE SERVICE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER WAS NOT PROPERLY ASSEMBLED OR COULD HAVE BEEN DAMAGED BY THE EVACUATION AND FILLING OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM AT THE ASSEMBLY PLANT.
Consequence: THIS CAN RESULT IN A PARTIAL BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE DUE TOINTERNAL MASTER CYLINDER LEAKAGE WHICH CAN CAUSE LOSS OF BRAKING ON TWO OF THEFOUR WHEELS. IF THIS OCCURS, THERE WOULD BE INCREASED BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL, HIGHERPEDAL EFFORTS AND INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES.
Remedy: A NEW BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER WILL BE INSTALLED.

ONE OR BOTH OF THE BOLTS SECURING THE AUTOMATIC SEAT BELT RESTRAINT SYSTEM TRACKS TO THE B-PILLARS WERE NOT ADEQUATELY TIGHTENED.
Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN RESULT IN THE AUTOMATIC SEAT BELTSYSTEM TRACK JOINTS HAVING LESS THAN DESIGN STRENGTH, AND INCREASE THE RISK OFINJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION OR SUDDEN STOP.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL TIGHTEN THE PASSIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEM TRACK MOUNTING BOLTS.

FUEL FILLER HOSES MAY HAVE BEEN CUT PRIOR TO INSTALLATION BY A UTILITY KNIFE USED TO OPEN THE SHIPPING BOX.
Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE CAN RESULT IF THE CUT EXTENDED THROUGH THETHICKNESS OF THE HOSE WALL. LEAKING FUEL CAN RESULT IN A FIRE IF EXPOSEDTO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.
Remedy: REPLACE THE FUEL FILLER HOSE.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1993 NISSAN QUEST. AFTER PARKING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE VENT ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES, THE SMOKE CLEARED. SHE TURNED THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND FLAMES APPEARED UNDER THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT. THE FIRE AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS ARRIVED AT THE SCENE AND A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 00V419001 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY); HOWEVER, THE CONTACT NEVER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 200,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1993 NISSAN QUEST. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HER VEHICLE WAS SQUEAKING AND THAT SHE HAD TO HOSE OFF HER FRONT ROTORS WHEN THEY OVERHEATED. HER VEHICLE WAS ALSO EXPERIENCING LONG STOPPING DISTANCES. THE FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. RECENTLY, THE SERVICE BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND THEN DIMMED. SAFETY RECALL # 92V32001 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: FOUNDATION COMPONENTS: MASTER CYLINDER) WAS FOUND. THE FREE PORTION OF THE SAFETY RECALL NO LONGER APPLIES TO THIS VEHICLE. THE POWERTRAIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 200,000.
EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLTS BROKEN NISSAN REPLACED BOLTS 1800.00 20,000 MILES LATER SAME PROBLEM NISSAN SAYS NOT RESPONSIBLE BECAUSE IT HAD BEEN LONGER THAN 20,000 MILES AS FAR AS I CAN TELL NISSAN DID NOT USE THE NEW IMPROVED MANIFOLD BOLTS FOR THIS REPAIR.*AK
AS HAS HAPPENED TO CLOSE TO 100% OF QUEST/MERCURY VILLAGER OWNERS, I HAVE CRACKED MANIFOLDS, MISSING MANIFOLD STUDS, AND SEVERAL BROKEN MANIFOLD STUDS. THIS RESULTS IN POOR STARTS, EXHAUST LEAKS, AND A NOTICEABLE "CLACKING" (EXHAUST LEAK) UPON ACCELERATION. MY VEHICLE HAS 118K MILES. I UNDERSTAND THE LABOR FOR A COMPLETE FIX CAN RUN OVER $1000, WHILE PARTS RUN UNDER $100. I HAVE CONTACTED 1-800-NISSAN1 WITH THIS ISSUE AND THE OPERATOR WAS AWARE OF THIS VERY COMMON, SERIOUS PROBLEM AND AFFIRMED THAT I WOULD BE CONTACTED WITH ANY POSSIBLE COMPENSATION.

AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM CAUGHT ON FIRE, BLOWING FLAMES FROM BURNING PLASTIC INTO PASSENGER COMPARTMENT, WHILE DRIVING ON RESIDENTIAL STREET W/ AC ON. PROBLEM DIAGNOSED AS LEAVES CRUMBLING THEN FALLING THROUGH AREA WHERE WINDSHIELD WIPERS SIT INTO THE AC BLOWER INTAKE, THEN SITTING IN THE BLOWER. RESISTOR SITS NEXT TO BLOWER, GETS "ALMOST RED-HOT" WHEN AC IS ON; THE HEAT IGNITED THE LEAVES IN THE BLOWER, THE PLASTIC CAUGHT ON FIRE, AND FUMES FROM LEAVES AND BURNING AC SYSTEM WERE BLOWN INTO PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THE SHOP (ALBANY HILL AUTO) SAID THE BLOWER SHOULD HAVE HAD A GRATE OVER THE INTAKE TO KEEP LEAVES OUT AND THE INTAKE WAS POORLY POSITIONED TO BEGIN WITH.*AK
EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLT FAILURES, MISSING AND BROKEN OFF WITHOUT ANY WARNING AND THE INTERMITTENT ENGAGEMENT OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WHEN THE TURN SIGNALS ARE APPLIED. THE WASHERS FOR THE WINDSHIELD WORKS OCCASIONALLY AND THE WIPERS THEMSELVES FUNCTION ERRATICALLY.*AK
