CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 201, "OCCUPANT PROTECTION IN INTERIOR IMPACT." DURING TESTING, THE 3-DOOR HATCHBACK EXCEEDED THE PERFORMANCE CRITERION IN THE STANDARD MIDWAY ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE WINDSHIELD SUPPORT PILLAR (A-PILLAR).
Consequence: AN OCCUPANT'S HEAD THAT CONTACTS THE A-PILLAR DURING A CRASH COULD EXPERIENCE AN INCREASED RISK OF A HEAD INJURY AS A RESULT OF THIS CONDITION.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW ENERGY MANAGEMENT BRACKETS TO SUPPORT THE A-PILLAR COVERS AND INCREASE THE ENERGY ABSORBING PERFORMANCE OF THE A-PILLAR IN THE RELEVANT AREA. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN OCTOBER 28, 2002. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 1.5 LITER OR 1.6 LITER ENGINES THAT WERE ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALASKA, COLORADO, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, MAINE, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WHILE DRIVING AT A STEADY THROTTLE OPENING FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME DURING EXTREMELY COLD AMBIENT TEMPERATURES (BELOW APPROXIMATELY -5 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT WITH HIGH HUMIDITY), MOISTURE IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER BLOWBY GASES CAN FREEZE AND BLOCK THE POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION (PCV) VALVE AND HOSE. IF THE PCV HOSE FREEZES, COMBUSTION CHAMBER GASES ARE FORCED THROUGH THE BREATHER HOSE INTO THE AIR INTAKE HOSE AND THEN INTO THE THROTTLE BODY.
Consequence: MOISTURE IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER BLOWBY GASES MAY FREEZE INSIDE THE THROTTLE BODY BORE AND THROTTLE BODY IDLE SPEED CONTROL CIRCUIT RESULTING IN THE THROTTLE VALVE NOT CLOSING FULLY AND A HIGHER THAN NORMAL IDLE SPEED WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS RELEASED.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW, RELOCATED PCV HOSE AND WILL ADDITIONALLY INSTALL A HEATED THROTTLE BODY ON THE 2000-2001 ACCENTS EQUIPPED WITH 1.5 LITER ENGINES THAT WERE PRODUCED THROUGH JANUARY 31, 2001. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 15, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

THE PROTECTIVE RUBBER BOOT WHICH COVERS THE BALL JOINT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR DRIVE ARM AND THE WINDSHIELD WIPER DRAG LINK CAN STICK TO THE SURFACE OF THE DRIVE ARM. IF THE RUBBER BOOT STICKS AND THE WIPER MOTOR IS TURNED ON, BINDING OF THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THE DRIVE ARM AND DRAG LINK RESULTS, CAUSING THE BALL JOINT CONNECTION TO DISENGAGE.
Consequence: IF THE CONNECTION DISENGAGES, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ARE INOPERATIVE. INOPERATIVE WINDSHIELD WIPERS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO REDUCED VISIBILITY DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER.

MY CARS FUEL TANK IS NOW GIVING ME PROBLEMS. WHEN I PULL UP TO THE PUMP GET GAS THE CAR SAYS ITS EMPTY BUT WHEN FUELING THE CAR CONSTANTLY CLICKS SAYING ITS FULL. I HAVE TO KEEP TAKING THE PUMP IN AND OUT OF THE CAR TO RESEAL IT THEN TRY AGAIN AND AGAIN AND MOST TIMES AGAIN. WHEN THE GAS ATTENDANTS SEE WHAT CAR I OWN AND THE TROUBLE I HAVE THEY SAY ITS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH HYUNDAI'S IN GENERAL AND DOES NOT MATTER WHAT MODEL. IT'S VERY IRRITATING WHEN I CAN ONLY GET A FEW DOLLARS AT A TIME BECAUSE IT TAKES SO MUCH TIME. MY BROTHER IS A MECHANIC AND SAID HE GETS THESE ALL THE TIME. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT WHEEL BROKE. THE WHEEL BROKE ALONG THE BOTTOM OF ALL THE HOLES IN THE RIM. WE REPLACED THE RIM. ON 9/17/2011 THE DRIVER FRONT SIDE BROKE IN THE SAME WAY. *TT

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND A COMPLAINT WAS FILED BUT NO OTHER ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,126. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL AUTOMOTIVE FACILITY WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED OF A POTENTIAL RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 01V346000- VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) AND TO HAVE THE DEALER INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER VERIFIED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND PROVIDED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. ALL OF THE INDICATORS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WERE ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC AND HAD THE BATTERY REPLACED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. SHE CALLED THE MANAGER AT THE DEALER WHERE THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED AND WAS ADVISED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS FULLY IN THE PARK POSITION. SHE PLACED THE GEAR FROM PARK INTO DRIVE AND THEN BACK INTO THE PARK GEAR. THE ENGINE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO START. SHE BELIEVES THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE SHE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO MOVE HER GEARS AROUND NUMEROUS TIMES TO START THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT HAS AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER TO HAVE THE VEHICLE INSPECTED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 84,000.

THE AIRBAG DIDN'T DEPLOY SHE WAS INJURED BRUISING AND WHIPLASH,I CALLED HYUNDAI HEADQUARTERS AND ASKED IF THEY WANTED TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE TO ESTABLISH WHY THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONSUMER AFFAIRS REP CAROLYN B HARVEY SENT ME A FORM LETTER SAYING THEY WERE INTERESTED I N EXAMINING THE VEHICLE , I ASKED IF THE VEHICLE COULD BE SENT TO A DEALER , I WAS INFORMED THEY WOULD BUT THERE WOULD BE A CHARGE OF 40 DOLLARS A DAY, AND THE PROCESS WOULD TAKE 4 TO 6 WEEKS, PLEASE ADD MY COMPLAINT TO YOUR FILES. *TR

CHANGING GEARS WHEN THE GEAR SHIFT LET GO . I HAD NO MORE GEARS COULDN'T DRIVE. TURNS OUT THE SHIFTER ROD GOES INTO THE TRANSMISSION AND IS HELD IN PLACE WITH A SHEAR PIN. SHEAR PIN BROKE I HAD TO REPLACE TRANSMISSION PINS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BREAK ACCORDING TO A HYUNDAI MECHANIC. BUT LATELY THEY HAVE HAD A FEW VEHICLES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM I THINK THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL. IT COST ME 900 BECAUSE OF A PIN THAT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BREAK. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING . FOR MORE THAN TWO YEARS I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING TO MY DC-AREA HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP THAT MY CAR IS BURNING OR LEAKING OIL BUT THEY FAILED TO DIAGNOSE PROBLEM, APPARENTLY TO AVOID FIXING IT UNDER THE WARRANTY. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FOR ME TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE BUT HYUNDAI WILL NOT HONOR ITS MUCH HYPED WARRANTY AND FIX MY CAR AND EVEN THE DISTRICT OFFICE INSISTS THAT I KEEP DRIVING IT FOR ITS THIRD AND *UNNECESSARY* OIL CONSUMPTION TEST.
