II WAS PUTTING MY CAR IN PARK AND THE AIR BAGS INFLATED AND TO GAS LIKE SMELL CAME FROM THE BAGS.
I HAVE HAVING ISSUES WITH WIRING. WIDE SHIELD WIPERS DON'T WORK, MULTIPLE HEAD LIGHTS ARE OUT AND DOME LIGHT STAYS ON SOMETIMES
MY VEHICLE STARTED MOVING WHEN I PARKED IN A 30 DEGREE INCLINE.
IT WAS LATE SUMMER, CLOSE TO EARLY FALL 2017. MY TWO SONS, AGES 17 AND 15, HAD JUST GOTTEN OUT OF FOOTBALL PRACTICE AND WERE GETTING INTO THE 1999 MUSTANG TO COME HOME. (MY 17 YEAR OLD SON, MATTHEW, HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR QUITE AWHILE, AND HAD NO TRAFFIC INFRACTIONS OR VIOLATIONS YET EITHER, NOR DOES HE NOW. HE HAS BEEM A CAREFUL DRIVER.) THEY WERE DRIVING VERY SLOWLY, AS THEY HAD JUST EXITED THEIR PARKING SPOT, AND THEN PROCEEDED AHEAD, AND WHILE DRIVING IN VERY SLOW MOTION WENT OVER A SMALL BUMP OR NODE, OR BARELY ANYTHING, IN THE ENUMCLAW HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT. THE AIRBAGS BOTH BLEW OUT SUDDENLY, SLIGHTLY INJURING MY 15 YEAR OLD SON'S HAND, AND BLINDING AND PUSHING THEM BOTH BACKWARD IN THEIR SEATS. BOTH OF THEM JUMPED OUT OF THE CAR IMMEDIATELY, VERY SCARED. THEY HAD BEEN DRIVING VERY SLOWLY, SO WERE ABLE TO STOP SUDDENLY DO THIS AND STILL SAFELY ENOUGH TO IMMEDIATELY GET OUT. MANY OF THE FOOTBALL BOYS WERE WATCHING, AS THEY WERE DRIVING RIGHT BY THEM, AND EVERYONE BROKE OUT IN EMOTION. ONE WITNESS CLAIMED THAT IT CAUSED THE WHEELS TO LIFT OFF THE GROUND. THEY DROVE HOME THAT DAY, WITH AIRBAGS OUT, BUT SINCE THEY HAVE QUITE DRIVING THE CAR, AS IT APPEARS TO BE ILLEGAL TO DRIVE IT WITHOUT AIRBAGS. NOW WE DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT THIS SITUATION, AND WE ARE LEFT FEELING SHORT OF ONE OF OUR NECESSARY VEHICLES. SINCE THERE WAS NOT ACTUALLY AN ACCIDENT THAT SET OFF THE AIRBAGS, AND THE CAR IS MINIMALLY INSURED, WE DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. NOTE: I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THE EXACT DATE, BUT IT IS CLOSE.
MY SEAT BELTS DO NOT FUNCTION WELL. SOMETIMES, THEY RETRACT VERY SLOW, LOSE AND SOMETIMES THEY DO NOT EVEN RETRACT. ALSO, SOMETIME THEY GET STUCK. WHEN I BRAKE HARD, THEY STUCK AND TOO TIGHT....ON THE OTHER HAND SOMETIMES THEY ARE VERY LOSE AND DOESN'T STAY TIGHT TO MY CHEST, SAME IS THE CASE WITH THE NAVIGATOR SEAT BELTS AND ALSO THE REAR SEAT SEAT BELTS. IT BEEN HAPPENING FOR COUPLE OF WEEKS.
INTAKE MANIFOLD CRACK DESTROYING ENGINE. CYLINDER HEAD SPARK PLUG BLOW OUT. HEATER CORE FAILURE. CONVERTIBLE TOP DETERIORATING. FUEL PUMP FAILURE ALL LESS THAN 1200000

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO DECREASE IN SPEED WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS DEACTIVATED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED, BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP. THE CONTACT SHUT THE ENGINE OFF WHILE DRIVING IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 99V062001 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 165,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD MUSTANG. WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND IMPACTED THE CONTACT IN THE FACE WITH EXCESSIVE FORCE, CAUSING UNKNOWN INJURIES. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS REQUIRED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
THE CAR WAS BUILT WITH A PLASTIC INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE MANIFOLD BEGAN LEAKING AT THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING AND THEN THE HEATER HOSE CONNECTION ON THE INTAKE MANIFOLD SUDDENLY BROKE. I NOW HAVE TO HAVE THE ENTIRE INTAKE MANIFOLD REPLACED BECAUSE OF POOR DESIGN AND MATERIAL SELECTION. FORD KNEW OF THE PROBLEM BUT REFUSES TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE AND HOPES IT WILL JUST GO AWAY. THEY SHOULD REIMBURSE THE OWNERS OF THE VEHICLES FOR REPAIRS THAT WERE DUE TO POOR DESIGN AND MATERIALS USED TO MAKE THIS PART. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD MUSTANG GT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, SHE SMELLED A STRONG ODOR OF ANTIFREEZE. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND NOTICED A CRACK IN THE PLASTIC MANIFOLD AND COOLANT LEAKING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS, WHO STATED THAT THE MANIFOLD WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS NOT A RECALL RELATED TO THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000. THE WAS UNAVAILABLE.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE MANIFOLD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED HIM THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS OR WARRANTIES AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,000.

THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEAT BELTS WOULD NOT RETRACT SIMILAR TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 99V250000 (SEAT BELTS:FRONT:ANCHORAGE). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO HAVE THE ENTIRE MECHANISM FOR BOTH SIDES REPLACED. THE CONTACT DID NOT INFORM THE MANUFACTURER NOR WAS THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 92,658 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGES WERE UNKNOWN.

WHEN HE TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE AND HE CRASHED INTO AN EMBANKMENT. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT WAS INJURED DUE TO HIM IMMEDIATELY EJECTING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS PENDING AN INVESTIGATION. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILES WERE APPROXIMATELY 134,000.

MY WIFE WAS COMING HOME WITH FIVE OF MY SIX KIDS AND TURNED OFF OF THE 4-LANE HIGHWAY ONTO OUR EXIT FOR OUR HOUSE AND THE REAR AXLE BROKE..IF SHE HAD STAYED ON THE 4-LANE AT 65 M.P.H. WE COULD'VE HAD MULTIPLE INJURIES OR EVEN DEATHS !! I HAVE REVIEWED ALL KINDS OF COMPLAINTS ON THE SAME PROBLEM...WHY HAVEN'T THERE BEEN ANY RECALLS. *TR

1999 FORD MUSTANG A/C STOP WORKING REBUILD COMPRESSION*CW THE CONSUMER STATED THE AIR CONDITIONER STOPPED WORKING. THE DEALER REPLACED IT WITH A RE-BUILT COMPRESSOR AND CHARGED THE CONSUMER $529.17. ONE YEAR LATER, THE AC STOPPED WORKING AGAIN AND THE DEALER REPLACED IT WITH ANOTHER RE-BUILT COMPRESSOR, BUT THE CONSUMER WAS NOT CHARGED. THREE MONTHS LATER, THE AC COMPRESSOR FAILED AGAIN AND THEY INSTALLED ANOTHER RE-BUILT AC COMPRESSOR AND THE CONSUMER WAS CHARGED $ 454.77. *JB
WHILE DRIVING THE METAL PIECE HOLDING THE DRIVER SIDE SHOCK ABSORBER TORE AWAY FROM THE WALL IT WAS MOUNTED TO. THE PIECE THEN TORE INTO THE INNER WHEEL WELL CUTTING IT LIKE RIBBON. THE DAMAGE WAS APPARENTLY CAUSED BY HITTING A BUMP IN ROUGH ROAD BUT THERE WAS NO SINGLE HIT OF A LARGE POT HOLE. JUST NORMAL DRIVING. *TR
SWE PURCHASED OUR 1999 FORD MUSTANG GT NEW AND A 25K MILES YHE REAR END DIFFERENTIAL WAS MAKING A LOT OF NOISE. FORD REPLACED THE ENTIRE THIRD MEMBER UNIT AND ALL CARRIER BEARINGS. AT 35K MILES THE ISSUE REOCCUED AND THIS TIME WE TOOK THE CAR TO A DIIFERENTIAL SPECIALIST WHO SAID THE CARRIER BEARINGS ON ONE SIDE WERE COMPLETELY GONE AND REPLACED THEM. THEN AT 45K MILES THE SEME ISSUE DEVELOPED AND WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DIFFERENTIAL EXPERT. HE COULD NOT UBDERSTAND THE FAILUER AND UPON FURTHER ANALYSIS DETERMINED THE THE DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING WAS BENT AND HIS VIEW WAS THAT IST WAS MANUFACTURED THAT WAY OR IT BENT I=ON THE DELIVERY RIDE TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DIFF HOUSING WAS PROFESSIONALLY STRAIGTENED AND NOW THE CAR HAS 95K MILES ON IT AND NO FURTHER PROBLEM. WE WROTE FORD ABOUT THIS AND NEVER RECEIEVED A REPLY. *TR
HEARING A EXHAUST LEAK LIKE NOISE AND AROUND THE SPARK PLUG THERE IS AIR COMING OUT OF THE HEADS CAUSING THEM TO EVENTUALLY BLOW OUT AND I WILL BE VERY UPSET IF FORD DON'T REPLACE IT SINCE IT IS HAPPENING TO ALOT OF CARS!!! *TR
CAR HAD BEEN PARKED IN GARAGE FOR ABOUT 8 HOURS SINCE DRIVEN. CAR CAUGHT FIRE AND DESTROYED GARAGE AND CAR. FIRE INVESTIGATOR SAID THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY BRAKE SWITCH IN MASTER CYLINDER. *TR
SLOWING DOWN FOR A STOP SIGN WHEN THE 3 RD SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF MY 1999 MUSTANG GT WITH A 4.6 V8 . IT ALSO DESTROYED THE COIL ON TOP OF THE PLUG. *TR
I HAVE EXPERIENCED A SPARK PLUG BLOWOUT IN MY 1999 FORD MUSTANG WITH 4.6L V8. I HAVE SINCE READ ABOUT THE VULNERABILITY OF THESE ENGINES TO EXPERIENCE SPARK PLUG BLOWOUT. THE FIRST BLOWOUT WAS EXPERIENCED PRIOR TO CHANGING ANY SPARK PLUGS AND THEREFORE CAN NOT BE DEEMED TO BE A CAUSE OF IMPROPER TORQUING, ETC. A HELI-COIL WAS USED TO REPAIR THE SPARK PLUG BLOWOUT, ONLY TO HAVE THE SPARK PLUG BLOWN OUT AGAIN AT A LATER DATE. THIS TIME THE CYLINDER HEADS WERE DAMAGED AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. THE CYLINDER HEAD REPLACEMENT WAS A MAJOR INCONVENIENCE BOTH IN COST OF REPAIR, AND IN THE SEVERITY OF THE MALFUNCTION. I AM VERY DISTURBED TO HEAR THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS AND NUMBER OF OTHER INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME PROBLEM WITHOUT ANY PROPER RECOGNITION OR ACTION BY FORD. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT TO DRAW MORE ATTENTION TO THIS ISSUE AND PERHAPS GET SOME FEDERAL ACTION AGAINST FORD FOR THIS ISSUE. SPARK PLUG BLOW OUT. THERE WAS REALLY NOTHING THAT LED UP TO THIS THAT I KNOW OF. APPARENTLY THIS IS SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS A LOT TO FORD VEHICLES (I HAVE A 99 MUSTANG V8). FORD RECOMMENDED A NEW HEAD ($2000). AN ALTERNATIVE WAS TO RETAPE THE HEAD ($800). *TR
MY WIFE AND GRANDDAUGHTER WHERE DRIVING HOME WHEN THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE TIRE SIDE WALL FAILED AT 50MPH AND THE TIRE DEPARTED THE CARS RIM. LUCKILY MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE CAR AND WAS TRAVELING AT A SAFE SPEED AND WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR ON THE RIM ONLY SAFELY. I CHECK TIRE PRESSURE AND MAINTAIN IT TO CAR AND TIRE MANUFACTURES SPECIFICATIONS ON OUR FORD MUSTANG SINCE IT IS A HIGH PERFORMANCE TIRE AND CAR. I 'AM EXTREMELY UPSET AT BRIDGESTONE AS THIS TIRE SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED AND COMPROMISED THE SAFETY OF MY WIFE AND GRANDCHILD. *TR

NUMBER 3 SPARK PLUG WAS EJECTED .CAR WAS TOWED, AND AS OF THIS EMAIL IS BEING REPAIRED IN FLORIDA. WE WERE ON VACATION AT THE TIME. HEAD WAS REMOVED, AND IS BEING REPAIRED. WE HAD TO RENT A CAR TO GET BACK TO PA. ALSO HAVE TO FLY BACK TO FLORIDA TO DRIVE CAR BACK TO PA. *TR

THE DEALER STATED THAT THE LOCK NUT THAT HELD THE FRONT WHEEL SPINDLE ASSEMBLY DETACHED BECAUSE IT WAS IMPROPERLY TIGHTENED AND FELL OFF . THE DEALER REPLACED THE FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,165 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 4,170. UPDATED 12/12/2007 *BF
THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PANEL IN MY 1999 FORD WINDSTAR HAS BEEN GOING HAYWIRE SINCE MAY 2007. ALL THE NEEDLES WERE GOING ROUND AND ROUND WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I HAD TAKEN IT TO GRIFFEN BROTHERS AND THEY CON NOT FIND A INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ANYWHERE. THEY CALLED FORD MOTORS AND THEY WERE TOLD THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WAS IN NATIONAL BACK ORDER. IF THEY ARE IN NATIONAL BACK ORDER, THAT MUST MEAN THAT THERE ARE ALOT OF THE SAME PROBLEMS EVERYWHERE. SHOULDN'T THIS HAVE BEEN A RECALL ISSUE? ON AUGUST 30, 2007 GRIFFEN CALLED ME AND SAID THAT THEY HAVE RECEIVED THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER THAT THEY ORDERED ON 8/20, 2007. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO HIS RESIDENCE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 96,000.

THERE WAS A SLIGHT TICKING NOISE COMING FROM ENGINE BAY THAT I THOUGHT WAS AN EXHAUST LEAK. EVENTUALLY THE SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE HEAD STRIPPING THE TOP THREADS OUT OF THE ALUMINUM HEAD. IN ORDER TO FIX THE CAR, I HAD TO HAVE A LOCAL SHOP HELICOIL THE HEAD TO ADD THREADS TO THE HEAD. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE LEFT REAR TIRE CAME OFF THE RIM. THERE WAS NO WARNING SIGNALS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. CAR WAS LEAKING COOLANT OUT OF THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING. WHEN I WENT TO REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT AND O-RING GASKET, I DISCOVERED THAT THE LEDGE THAT THE O-RING SITS ON HAD BROKEN OFF AND FELL INTO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE THERMOSTAT COULD NOT BE PUT IN CORRECTLY WITHOUT COOLANT SPILLING EVERYWHERE. THE ONLY REMEDY WAS TO REPLACE A PLASTIC INTAKE MANIFOLD THAT COSTS 800+ DOLLARS. *JB
I AM THE OWNER OF A 1999 FORD MUSTANG, WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, PURCHASED IN 2004. LAST WEEK, I PARKED MY CAR ON A LOCAL STREET, AT A METER AND WENT INTO CHURCH. WHILE DRIVING ON I-75 THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE. I DROVE THE THE NEAREST GAS STATION TO CHECK OUT THE TIRES AND INFLATION THINKING THE TIRES MUST BE LOW. MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS USING VARIOUS CLEANING OR POLISHING AGENTS HAVE PROVEN FUTILE. THIS IS AN INSIDIOUS PROBLEM, AKIN TO HAVING ONE'S VISION SLOWLY GET BAD SO YOU LEARN TO LIVE WITH IT. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ON MY WAY TO WORK, ABOUT A BLOCK AWAY FROM MY RESIDENCE. THE SEAT BACK JUST UNEXPECTEDLY FELL TO A FULL RECLINE AGAINST THE BACK SEAT. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR BACK TO MY RESIDENCE SO I COULD EVALUATE WHAT HAD HAPPENED. I TRIED TO VISUALLY SEE IF I COULD IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM BY TRYING TO REPOSITION THE SEAT. I ENDED UP REMOVING THE BLACK PLASTIC COVER, WHICH IS FASTENED OVER THE LEVER/LATCH ASSEMBLY, TO EXPOSE THE INTERNAL MECHANISM OF THE LEVER/LATCH ASSEMBLY ON THE RECLINING SEAT BACK. UPON REMOVING THE PLASTIC COVER, I WAS ABLE TO IDENTIFY A LOOSE BOLT IN THE MECHANISM. I WAS ABLE TO PULL THE BOLT OUT OF THE MECHANISM WITHOUT UNSCREWING IT. THE BOLT LITERALLY SLID STRAIGHT OUT. AS I INSPECTED THE LOCATION WHERE THE BOLT WAS SUPPOSED TO FASTEN INTO, I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS STILL A REMAINING PORTION OF THE BOLT LEFT IN THE MECHANISM. THE BOLT, WHICH FASTENS THE LATCH/LEVER SYSTEM OF THE RECLINING (SEAT BACK) PORTION OF THE FRONT DRIVER'S SEAT, ESSENTIALLY SHEARED IN HALF. THIS CAUSED THE RECLINING (SEAT BACK) PORTION OF THE FRONT DRIVER'S SEAT TO FALL AWAY FROM ITS UPRIGHT POSITION. WITHOUT THE BOLT FASTENED INTO THE LATCH/LEVER ASSEMBLY WHICH ALLOWS DRIVER TO MANIPULATE POSITION OF SEAT BACK THE SEAT BACK IS NOT ABLE TO BE POSITIONED UPRIGHT, ULTIMATELY MAKING DRIVING IMPOSSIBLE. BASICALLY, THE SEAT BACK SWIVELS LOOSELY FROM THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE BACK SEAT AND CANNOT BE SET SECURELY IN AN UPRIGHT DRIVABLE POSITION. THE BOLT IN QUESTION IS A M10 WITH 1.5MM PITCH (METRIC 10), WHICH IS CLOSE IN SIZE TO A 3/8 STANDARD BOLT. I HAVE ONLY OWNED THE CAR FOR 5 YEARS AND 4 MONTHS (I PURCHASED IT IN APRIL OF 1999). THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SERIOUS INJURY AND OR DEATH. PURCHASED A USED 1999 FORD MUSTANG COBRA SVT WITH 29,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. SINCE OWNING THE CAR, I HAD SEVERAL PROBLEMS SUCH AS FAULTY CHASIS WIRING SYSTEM, CAR SHUTDOWN WHEN HOT AND WOULD NOT RESTART, FAULTY IAC VALVE AND THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR HAD TO BE REPLACED, NO BACK-UP LIGHTS DUE TO MANUAL TRANSMISSION REVERSE SWITCH FAILURE, AND BRAKE LIGHTS SWITCH FAILURE. AT APPROXIMATELY 55,000 MILES I HAD NOTICED THE CAR HAD RAN LOW ON COOLANT AND EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION BETWEEN OIL CHANGE INTERVALS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN TO ILLUMINATE AT 58,000 MILES ALONG WITH BLUE SMOKE EMANATING FROM THE DUAL EXHAUST. MY MECHANIC REPLACED BOTH THE IAC VALVE AND THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR CITING THE BLUE SMOKE WAS ATTRIBUTED TO A RICH IDLE CONDITION. A FEW MONTHS LATER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT RETURNED. AN EXHAUST LEAK WAS DETECTED AND CORRECTED AT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND HEADER CONNECTION POINT. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT AWAY, HOWEVER, THE RICH IDLE CONDITION REMAINED. AT A LITTLE OVER 64,000 WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK THE CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF CITY TRAFFIC. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR, A LOUD NOISE CAME FROM UNDER-THE-HOOD NOT UNLIKE THE SOUND OF A THROWN ROD. I HAD THE MUSTANG TOWED TO MY MECHANIC WHOM DETERMINED FROM THE 3.5 QUARTS OF OIL SLUDGE RECOVERED FROM THE ENGINE, AND THE MILK LIKE FLUID IN THE VALVE COVER PAN, THE VEHICLE HEAD GASKET FAILURE WAS THE MOST PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE EVENT. I HAVE A CRACKED INTAKE MANIFOLD ON MY 1999 FORD MUSTANG GT WITH A 4.6 L ENGINE. IT HAVE GAINED KNOWLEDGE THAT THIS HAS BEEN A COMMON DEFECT ON THIS ENGINE SINCE THE 1996 MODEL YEAR ON ALMOST EVERY FORD MOTORS VEHICLE WITH THIS ENGINE SETUP. FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL ON THIS KNOWN DEFECTIVE PART AND DOES NOT ADMIT TO THIS PROBLEM IN THEIR VEHICLES. UPON CONTACTING THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE, THEY WILL NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE ON THE REPAIR THAT WILL COST THEIR INDIVIDUAL CUSTOMERS HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO REPAIR AND REPLACE. I FIND THIS UNACCEPTABLE FROM A COMPANY THAT MARKETS THEIR QUALITY TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC WHILE NOT FESSING UP TO A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT THAT HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR AT LEAST SEVEN YEARS. * CB

I DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING IN YOUR SERVICE BULLETINS, AND I REFUSE TO PAY THE $250 DOLLARS THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD COST TO REPLACE IT.

WHEN I CONTACTED FORD, THEY SAID THAT IT WAS NOT THEIR PROBLEM. WAS OUT OF WARRANTY SO THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT SUCH A FAILURE COULD EASILY RESULT IN A LOSS OF CONTROL OF ANOTHER MUSTANG WITH A SIMILAR SEAT, RESULTING IN INJURIES AND FATILITIES.*AK

UNPREDICTABLE PROBLEM. OCCASIONALLY, 5 TO 15 SECONDS AFTER I FIRST START MY 1999 MUSTANG GT, THE ENGINE WILL RAPIDLY INCREASE IN RPM AND THEN RETURN TO NORMAL. IF THE CAR IS IN DRIVE OR REVERSE AND I DO NOT HAVE MY FOOT FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR WILL JUMP FORWARD OR BACKWARD. I NOTICE THE PROBLEM MOSTLY WHEN I FIRST PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE. THE PULLEY SLIDES ON TO AN ALUMINUM SLEEVE THAT IS PART OF THE FRONT PLATE ON THE ENGINE. I WAS DOING A ROUTINE INSPECTION WHEN I NOTICED THE PULLEY SLIGHTLY TILTED. I APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BELT AND WAS ABLE TO PULL THE PULLEY, BOLT THAT GOES INTO THE PLATE TO HOLD THE PULLEY ON, AND THE METAL SLEEVE THAT WAS BROKEN OFF OF THE FRONT ENGINE PLATE. IF THIS PULLEY WOULD HAVE CAME OFF, THE BELT WOULD HAVE BEEN INSTANTLY FRAYED BY AN ADJACENT ENGINE COMPONENT RESULTING IN LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND POSSIBLY POWER STEERING. I CONTACTED FORD AND THEY TOLD ME THERE WERE NO REPORTS, RECALLS, OR FACTORY DEFECTS. THE KUHMO ECSTA SUPRA 712 WAS A REPLACEMENT SET OF TIRES ON MY L999 MUSTANG GT CONVERTIBLE. THE TIRE IS DESIGNED TO DISPLACE WATER THROUGH A LARGE, LATERAL CENTER CHANNEL. FROM READING DESCRIPTIONS OF THE TIRE, THIS TIRE DESIGN IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE A HIGH LEVEL OF HYDROPLANING RESISTANCE. AS AN AUTOMOTIVE ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WITH MANY, MANY YEARS OF OPERATING HIGH PERFORMANCE VEHICLES, I AM TRULY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR DESIGN. THE TIRE SEEMS TO HAVE SIGNIFCANT LATERAL GRIPPING CAPABILITY BOTH IN WET AND DRY CONDITIONS. HOWEVER, THE DEEP, LATERAL CENTER CHANNEL SEEMS TO MAKE THIS TIRE UNSAFE FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN A PERFECTLY SMOOTH HIGHWAY. THIS GROOVE "GRABS" ANY PERFECTIONS IN THE ROADWAY THAT ARE PARALLEL TO THE ACTUAL ROAD SURFACE AND WILL ACTUALLY "SNATCH" THE STEERING WHEEL FROM THE GRIP OF THE DRIVER. ANYTHING IN THE ROADWAY SUCH AS "OVERPAVINGS" WHICH CREATE PARALLEL RIDGES, HEAVY TRUCK TRAFFIC LANE DEPRESSIONS IN THE ROAD SURFACE WILL DO LIKEWISE. WHILE NOT A DESIGN ENGINEER, IT APPEARS THAT THIS GROOVE DOWN THE CENTER MIMICS A TRAIN WHEEL ON THE TRACK. THE TRAIN CAN ONLY FOLLOW THE TRACK DUE TO THE TRACK INSELF BEING INSERTED INTO THE TRAIN WHEEL. ANY IMPERFECTION IN THE ROADWAY THAT IS PARALLEL TO THE DIRECTION OF THE HIGHWAY AND THE ROTATION OF THE TIRE CREATES A REMARKABLY SIMILAR SENSATION.
