The contact owns a 1999 Ford E-350 Jamboree equipped with Sailun Tires, Tire Line: Terramax H/T, Tire Size: 225/75/R16, DOT Number: (535PLE50). The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 MPH, there were pieces of the driver's side inside dual tire striking the underside of the vehicle and hitting the highway. The contact managed to drive the vehicle back to his residence. The contact stated that the tread had separated leaving only the steel belt and the side wall. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate vehicle failure mileage was 80,000 and the tire failure mileage was 5,000.

While turning into a parking space the bolts to the steering box sheared off with complete loss of steering. Further inspection showed severe cracking and loss of metal in the steering box area. After doing some searches I found that this is common issue in the E series vans. I did do a recall search and a CSA search to see about having this problem resolved safely by a certified shop. Unfortunately I haven't found any recall information on what is obviously a serious safety issue. Apparently the bolts shear off at low speeds while turning. The real concern is should one bolt only crack and not let the steering box become useless the vehical may be at highway speed when the failure does occour causing complete loss of control of the vehicle. I've read hundreds of emails on this subject and none had a resolution provided by the Ford Motor Company. I would think that something this critical would have been addressed by now. Concidering the recalls for comparatively much lesser safety issues. Thank you for reviewing this matter.

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A USED 24' 1999 WINNEBAGO ITASCA SPIRIT WITH VERY LOW MILEAGE AND AT THAT TIME I NOTICED A SHAKING OR VIBRATION PROBLEM POSSIBLY COMING FROM THE TIRES. I OWNED A MOTOR HOME IN THE PAST AND HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE. THIS MOTOR HOME SAT FOR SEVERAL YEARS SO I ATTRIBUTED THE SHAKING TO THE MEMORY IN THE RUBBER OF FLAT SPOTS ON THE BOTTOM FROM SITTING FOR A LONG TIME THAT USUALLY SMOOTH OUT WHEN DRIVEN ESPECIALLY AFTER 30 OR 40 MILES ON A WARM DAY, BUT AFTER A 400 MILE TRIP IT DIDN'T SMOOTH OUT, IN FACT IT SEEMS TO HAVE WORSENED. BEFORE PURCHASING IT FROM A PRIVATE PARTY I RAN AN INSTAVIN AND CARFAX REPORT AND ONLY DISCOVERED AN UNCOMPLETED NHTSA RECALL #05S28 ON THE SPEED CONTROL ONLY. I THEN SEARCHED SEVERAL FORUMS AND DISCOVERED MANY, MANY REPORTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SHAKING AND LEARNED IT IS DUE TO FAULTY WHEELS AND FORD IS NOT MAKING GOOD THE PROBLEM BUT OFFERED AN EXPENSIVE FIX THAT I UNDERSTAND IS ALSO IFFY. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT MY FAMILY'S SAFETY DRIVING ON THESE DEFECTIVE WHEELS AND FIRST LOOKED INTO REPLACING THE TIRES WHICH I LEARNED ISN'T THE PROBLEM BUT THE FAULTY WHEELS THAT WERE AN OEM FORD PART, SO I WANT TO ADD MY COMPLAINT TO THE MANY YOU ALREADY HAVE AND MAYBE FORD WILL FIX THIS POTENTIALLY SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM.

A NEIGHBOR ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE RV WAS ON FIRE. THE CONTACT OBSERVED THAT THE MICROWAVE CAUSED THE FIRE AND SHE EXTINGUISHED IT WITHOUT NOTIFYING THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED AN EXTENSIVE BURN ON HER LEG, BUT DID NOT SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION. SAMSUNG ADVISED HER THAT THEY HAD NO PARTS TO REPAIR THE MICROWAVE ALTHOUGH IT WAS DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER ALSO STATED THAT THERE WERE NO AUTHORIZED RV DEALERS IN HER AREA TO REPLACE THE MICROWAVE. THE MICROWAVE WAS THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT IN THE RV AND IT WAS MOUNTED ON THE CEILING OF THE RV. THE FIRE BURNED A HOLE IN THE CEILING AND CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE CABINETS. THE CONTACT HAD NOT DRIVEN THE RV SINCE THE FIRE OCCURRED DUE TO THE SAFETY RISK AND THE HOLE IN THE CEILING. THE SERIAL AND PART NUMBERS WERE UNKNOWN. *TT

MY FORD E350 1999 MADE A LOUD FLAPPING NOISE AS I WAS LEAVING MY HOME. I PULLED RIGHT BACK INTO THE DRIVEWAY AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. I FOUND OUT THAT THE #2 SPARK PLUG HAD COMPLETELY BLOWN OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED ON ANY VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED. I TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY VEHICLES. FORD SAID IT WOULD COST $260 TO LOOK AT IT, AND UP TO $1700 IF THEY COULD REPAIR IT. PLUS TOWING. I ASKED HOW MUCH A NEW ENGINE WOULD COST SINCE THE VAN IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. FORD SAID IT WOULD COST $7,200 FOR A NEW ENGINE. THIS VAN HAS COST MORE FOR REPAIRS THAN ANY VEHICLE I HAVE OWNED IN MY LIFE. I AM 62. WELL IT GOES LIKE THIS, NEW PLUGS AND COIL PACKS WHERE INSTALLED AT DEAN ARBOUR FORD IN PINCONNING MICHIGAN IN MY 1999 E350 ECONOLINE VAN. SO THE ISSUE AT HAND FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ABOUT WAS IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF SAID PLUG OR PLUGS FROM WHAT I HAVE READ IN ANSWERS.COM FROM WHAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS SAID THAT IT IS IMPROPER INSTALLATION OR OVER TIGHTENING, NOT TORQUED PROPERLY. IT IS AS I SEE, POORLY DESIGNED AS TO THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENING TO SO MANY OTHERS. WHICH I SEE THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE DESIGN FLAW. MY EXPERIENCE WITH MY PROBLEM AT HAND WAS NOT UNDER HEAVY LOAD, I WAS AT A STOP SIGN AND WENT TO PROCEED. WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THAT WAS STEPPING ON THE GAS SLOWLY TO MOVE FORWARD AND BANG, AND I MEAN (BANG). IT KEEP POPPING UNTIL I SHUT IT DOWN IGNITING AS THAT CYLINDER IN ROTATION CAME TO THAT FIRING ORDER FOR THAT CYLINDER. EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE READ INDICATES THAT THE CYLINDER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF A 5.4 TRITON HEAD 2ND ONE FROM THE BACK FORWARD IS THE ONE THAT IS FAMOUS FOR EJECTING FROM THE HEAD. RIGHT ABOVE THE PLUG IS THE COIL PACK AND ABOVE THAT IS THE FUEL RAIL WHICH INTERN WHEN THE PLUG EJECTED ITSELF COULD HAVE BEEN VERY HAZARDOUS. THE POPPING WAS THE PLUG SPARKING, WHICH WAS IGNITING THE FUEL PUMPED INTO THE CYLINDER BY THE INJECTOR. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY EXPLOSIVE SITUATION MEANING (FIRE). WITH THE LUCK OF THE DRAW I WAS NOT LIKE SOME OF THE UNLUCKY ONES THAT HAVE CAUSED A FIRE FROM THE EJECTION OF THE SPARK PLUG. WITH THE COMPLAINTS THAT HAVE ARISED FROM THIS ISSUE THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS KNOWN PROBLEM, BEFORE SOMEONE LOOSES THEIR LIFE FROM THIS KNOWN ISSUE. 1999 FORD E350 CAUGHT FIRE AND BURNED TO A TOTAL LOSS WHILE SITTING COLD IN MY DRIVEWAY. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED ON NOV 8, 2010. DEC 12, 2010 I DROVE ABOUT 3 MILES TO THE GROCERY AROUND 20:30; I RETURNED HOME AND PARKED THE VEHICLE IN MY DRIVEWAY ABOUT 20:45. ABOUT 22:15 A PASSING CAR OBSERVED FLAMES COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AND FLARING TO CONTACT MY HOUSE. THE WITNESS ALERTED ME AT MY DOOR. I IMMEDIATELY GRABBED THE GARDEN HOSE AND ATTEMPTED TO SPRAY WATER INTO THE FRONT GRILL, LEFT SIDE TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. I COULD NOT SEE WHERE THE ACTUAL FIRE WAS AS THE HOOD WAS CLOSED, I SPRAYED WHERE THE FLAMES EXITED THE GRILL. THE WIND WAS BLOWING ABOUT 20 MPH AND I COULD NOT EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES. THE VEHICLE WAS FACING NORTH, THE WIND BLOWING FROM WEST TO EAST. THE FLAMES BEGAN TO SHOOT OUT FROM THE PASSENGER WHEEL WELL IN A HORIZONTAL STREAK AS THE WIND STOKED THE FIRE. NEIGHBORS CALLED 911 WHILE I DIVERTED THE WATER SPRAY FROM THE VEHICLE TO THE HOUSE AND GARAGE SINCE THE VAN WAS PARKED WITHIN 2 FEET OF THE GARAGE DOOR AND THE WIND NOW HAD FLAMES SHOOTING 8-12' HIGH AND BRUSHING THE WOOD GARAGE DOOR. THE FIREMEN ARRIVED, KNOCKED THE VEHICLE HOOD OFF WITH A TOOL AND SPRAYED THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. DUE TO THE WIND, THE VAN WAS COMPLETELY FIRE GUTTED AND A TOTAL LOSS. I HAVE A 1999 CHINOOK CLASS C WITH A FORD E-350 CHASSIS POWERED BY A TRITON V-10. SHORTLY AFTER BUYING IT USED WE HAD A SPARK PLUG POP OUT. IT WAS AN ORIGINAL PLUG. WE HAD THEM CHANGED AND TOOK A CROSS COUNTRY TRIP. AS WE WERE COMING UP ON MEMPHIS TN. ANOTHER PLUG BLEW OUT. WE WERE ON AN INTERCHANGE IN A VERY DANGEROUS PLACE. REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FROM FORD. I MUST FABRICATE REPLACEMENTS FROM GENERIC PARTS. IT SHOULD BE A REQUIREMENT THAT BRAKE LINES BE MADE FROM STAINLESS STEEL SO THEY CAN'T RUST OUT. WE PURCHASED A 99 E250 CARGO VAN IN NOVEMBER 06, WE ARE NOT SURE IF OLD OWNER HAD SAME PROBLEM, WITHIN 2 WEEKS WE HAD PROBLEMS WITH VAN STARTING. WE ONLY HAVE THE PROBLEM AFTER THE CAR IS SHUT OFF. IT DOES NOT STALL WHILE RUNNING. WE CAN TURN IT OFF AND TRY TO START IT RIGHT BACK UP, IT WILL NOT TURN ALL THE WAY OVER. WE HAVE REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP AND HAD IN THE SHOP 3 TIMES. THEY ARE UNABLE TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG. IT HAS BEEN HOOKED UP TO A COMPUTER, WHEN IT IS STARTED IT SHOWS NOTHING WRONG, WHEN IT WON'T START IT WON'T READ AT ALL. LAST NIGHT THE 1999 FORD EXPEDITION EDDIE BAUER EDITION SUDDENLY WENT UP IN FLAMES FROM A FIRE THAT STARTED BY ITSELF UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. IT WAS PARKED IN THE CARPORT NEXT TO THE TAHOE WHICH WE ALSO LOST DUE TO THE FIRE. THE FORD VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR 2 DAYS BEFORE IT WENT UP INTO FLAMES. WE LOST 2 VEHICLES AND OUR CARPORT. TOOK IT IN FOR AN ESTIMATE FOR NEW TIRES, AND THEY SAID IT SHOULD BE TOWED TO A DEALER IT WAS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE, NEEDED BALL JOINTS, ROTORS, PADS.TOOK IT TO A DEALER TO HAVE THE WORK DONE UNDER OUR EXTENDED WARRANTY WE BOUGHT. TOOK IT BACK TO THE SAME DEALER A YEAR LATER AS THE ROTORS WERE GONE AGAIN. THE DEALER REPLACED ONLY THE RIGHT ONE AS WE WOULDNT PAY AGAIN. LAST WEEK 4 BLOCKS OFF THE FREEWAY AFTER 3 HR. VERY BAD BUMP AND CLUNKING SOUND FROM STEERING WHEN GOING OVER ROUGH SURFACES AT SLOW SPEEDS OR WHEN GOING DOWN HILL AND PUTTING ON BRAKES ESPECIALLY IN A TURN. BOUNCES OVER ROAD AND HARD TO CONTROL WHEN GOING DOWN HILL AND USING BRAKES. THE SAME PART HAS BEEN REPLACED IN THE STEERING COLUMN BY DEALER 7 TIMES AND ONLY STAYS FIXED FOR SHORT TIME. IT CONTINUALLY GETS WORSE UNTIL IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I BELIEVE BRAKES AND STEERING COLUMN ARE THE PROBLEMS. BOTH HAVE WORN OUT EXCESSIVELY. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS SINCE BUYING THE VAN NEW. AT 11:16PM THE POLICE RANG MY BELL TO INFORM ME THAT MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN A FIRE. THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY BURNED AND DESTROYED. 1999 FORD E150 CONVERSION VAN [XXX] GAS TANK IS LEAKING. THERE IS AN EXISTING RECALL FOR 1996-2000 MODEL YEARS BUILT AT THE LORAIN ASSEMBLY PLANT, HOWEVER, IT IS LISTED AGAINST E150 WAGONS, NOT VANS. I CHECKED MY VIN AGAINST THE RECALL AND IT WAS NOT LISTED. ACCORDING TO FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE, WAGONS COME WITH SEATS AND VANS DO NOT. SINCE MY VEHICLE WENT DIRECTLY FROM THE PLANT TO AN AFTERMARKET CONVERSION COMPANY, I DOUBT IT HAD SEATS. BUT, IT CERTAINLY WASN'T MANUFACTURED AS A CARGO VAN. THIS COMPLAINT IS BEING SUBMITTED ON 8/10/2004. THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION IS A 1999 FORD E-150 VAN WITH A 5.4L ENGINE. OVER THE PAST 6 WEEKS WE HAVE HAD THREE FUEL SYSTEM FAILURES. THE MOST RECENT AND SEVERE CONSEQUENCE OF THE FAILURE IS THAT THE VEHICLE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. TWO FORD DEALERSHIPS (ONE IN MARYLAND AND THE OTHER IN OKLAHOMA) HAVE REPLACED NUMEROUS FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS AND HAVE REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP THREE TIMES BUT HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DETERMINE THE UNDERLYING ROOT CAUSE FOR THE FUEL SYSTEM FAILURE. EACH TIME THE FORD DEALER REPLACES THE FUEL PUMP, THE VEHICLE WORKS FINE FOR ABOUT A WEEK THEN FAILS AGAIN. INTERESTINGLY, THE FUEL SYSTEM FAILURE IS SOMETIMES ACCOMPANIED BY A SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT AND SOMETIMES NOT. WHEN A SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WAS PRESENT, IT INDICATED A FUEL PUMP FAILURE. MOST RECENTLY (LAST NIGHT) THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AT ALL.

BEGINING IN THE YEAR 2000, THE 98 E150 WENT THROUGH THE FACTORY MOTOR AT 90,000 MILES. COOLANT MIXING WITH OIL WITHOUT EVER OVERHEATING. FORD WAS GOING TO FIX UNTIL I TOLD THEM THAT MY MY VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT A PRIVATELY OWNED SHOP VERSUS THE DEALERSHIP (MY BROTHER OWNS THE SHOP AND THE LOCAL DEALER SENDS HIM ALL OF THEIR DIFFICULT REPAIRS). IT TOOK ME APPROXIMATELY 16 MONTHS COME UP WITH THE MONEY TO HAVE THE MOTOR MACHINED AND REPAIRED PROPERLY. TOTAL COST $4000. I FINALLY FELT CONFIDENT THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD SERVE ME WELL, UNTIL TWO WEEKS AGO, THE TRANSMISSION LOCKED UP . OVERDRIVE MESSED UP AND CAUSED OTHER PROBLEMS AS WELL. THE VEHICLE IS A 1999 FORD E350 SUPER DUTY VAN WITH A TRITON V10 ENGINE. WHILE SEARCHING ONLINE AS WELL AS TALKING WITH OTHER PEOPLE, THIS ENGINE WAS A BIG FAILURE. I HAVE HEARD OF AT LEAST 122 OF THESE ENGINE HAS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. FORD CHARGES WELL OVER $3000 EACH TO HAVE THIS FIXED! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE. BRAKE FAILURE. THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED PREVIOUSLY AND I HAVE MADE NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO GET IT REPAIRED AT THE DEALER AND TO CONVEY THE PROBLEM TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT AND IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT. ONE OF THE FRONT WHEELS LOCK UP AND SERVE AS THE ONLY BRAKING FORCE. IN DRY WEATHER IT WILL "PULL" TO ONE SIDE AND IN WET WEATHER IT WILL SKID RESULTING IN NO BRAKING FORCE. ON 10/08/03 THIS OCCURRED IN A RAIN SHOWER AS I PULLED INTO AN INTERSTATE REST AREA (20-25MPH). I FIRST APPLIED THE BRAKES @ 100 - 125 FEET FROM THE REAR OF A TRACTOR-TRAILER. WITH MAXIMUM PEDAL PRESSURE NOTHING RESPONDED UNTIL I WAS 20 -25 FT FROM THE TRAILER. THE VEHICLE IS A 1999 CHINOOK CONVERSION ON A 1998 FORD 350 MOTOR HOME CHASIS. THE UNIT IS A DEATH TRAP, A TICKING TIME-BOMB WAITING TO EXPLODE. I CANNOT SELL THE UNIT IN GOOD CONSIENCE AND HAD TO BUY ANOTHER VEHICLE TO SUPPLEMENT ITS USE. GOODYEAR TIRE RECALL. I OWN A 15 PASSENGER FORD VAN, APPROX ONE YEAR AGO I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM GOODYEAR, TO TAKE MY VAN TO A GOODYEAR DEALER AND HAVE THE TIRES INSPECTED FOR SOME REPLACEMENT CAMPAIGN. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT MY TIRES WERE TO BE REPLACED AT NO CHARGE. RECENTLY FOUR OF THE FIVE REPLACEMENT TIRES HAVE SEPARATED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE FIFTH HAS NOT SEPARATED BECAUSE IT IS THE NEW SPARE. ONE OF THE CENTER TREADS IS LETTING GO AND ARE RISING HIGHER THEN THE REST OF THE TREADS CAUSING THE TIRE TO BOUNCE DRASTICALLY. THESE TIRES ARE THE GOODYEAR CONQUEST. I HAVE BEEN GETTING A LOT OF STATIC FROM THE SUPERIOR GOODYEAR DEALERS, SO AFTER CALLING GOODYEAR, I WAS ADVISED TO GO TO DISCOUNT TIRES FOR AN ADJUSTMENT. ONE OF MY TIRES SEPARATED A WEEK AGO, I REPLACED IT WITH THE SPARE, AND ON 9-19-03 THE FOURTH TIRE LET GO. I WAS ADVISED BY DISCOUNT TIRE WHY I WANTED THE SAME KIND OF TIRE FOR REPLACEMENT, I ADVISED THEM THAT GOODYEAR SAID THAT WAS THE ONLY TIRE I COULD REPLACE THEM WITH. DISCOUNT ADVISED DIFFERENTLY, AND PUT TWO MICHELIN TIRES ON FOR ME AT LITTLE COST. I GUESS ALL I AM TRYING TO DO IS TO ADVISE THAT THE TIRES GOODYEAR IS USING TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL RECALLED TIRES ARE WORSE THEN THE ORIGINALS. I HAD 50,000 PLUS MILES ON THE ORIGINAL TIRES WITH NO PROBLEMS, AND I AM BARELY GETTING 20,000 OF THE REPLACED TIRES. I AM NOT ASKING FOR ANYTHING ONLY TO ADVISE OF THE SITUATION. SEVERE GASOLINE LEAK WHEN FILLING TANK ON FORD 1999 E150 FORD VAN. WHEN FILLING TANK APPROXIMATELY 1 GALLON OF GAS WOULD LEAK ONTO TOP OF TANK AND ONTO THE GROUND UNDER THE VEHICLE. BOTH A SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE, THIS IS DIFFICULT TO DETECT AS ONE TYPICALLY DOES NOT LOOK UNDER THE VEHICLE WHEN FILLING THE TANK. FURTHERMORE, SOME LEAKAGE OCCURS WHEN GOING OVER LARGE HILLS AS THE GAS SLOSHES AROUND THE TOP OF THE TANK. UPON VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE FILL TUBE WITHOUT REMOVING THE TANK, THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE LEAK WAS NOT OBVIOUS. HOWEVER, PROBLEM APPEARED TO BE CAUSED BY A MISALIGNMENT OF THE TANK FILL HOLE AND THE BOTTOM OF THE FILL HOSE ASSEMBLY. THIS SEEMS LIKELY GIVEN THE SMALL CONNECTORS THAT ARE USED TO HOLD THE TANK AND FILL TUBE CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY TOGETHER. UPON EXAMINATION OF THE FILL TUBE ASSEMBLY, IT APPEARS RUSTY, BUT IT IS INTACT. FURTHERMORE, THE HOSE AT THE TOP OF THE ASSEMBLY WAS DRY WHEN FILLING EVEN THOUGH THE TANK WAS LEAKING PROFUSELY. I DISCOVERED THIS LEAKAGE ON A FAMILY TRIP (WITH MY FAMILY IN THE VEHICLE) HAVING JUST DEPARTED FROM A HIGHWAY. BY THE TIME I DETECTED THE LEAK, A PUDDLE APPROXIMATELY THREE QUARTERS OF THE SIZE OF THE VEHICLE HAD FORMED UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE LEAK WAS ABSOLUTELY REPRODUCIBLE. FORD'S NATIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE SEVERITY OF THE SAFETY ISSUE, AND SIMPLY STATED THEY RECOMMEND THAT I HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. AT THE DEALER I REQUESTED TO SPEAK TO A REGIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE. HOWEVER, I WAS TOLD THE REGIONAL SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES ARE RESOURCES FOR USE BY THE DEALERS, AND NOT AVAILABLE TO THE CUSTOMERS. I HAD THE DEALER REPLACE THE FILL TANK HOSE ASSEMBLY AT MY EXPENSE. UNFORTUNATELY, I AM AFRAID THAT THIS MAY BE A PROBLEM THAT IS ENDEMIC TO THE FORD ECONOLINE VEHICLE FLEET, AS THIS PARTICULAR VAN IS RELATIVELY NEW AND HAS EXPERIENCED A VERY MILD SERVICE HISTORY AS A FAMILY VEHICLE. *JB

MY WIFE AND I PLANNED TO TAKE TWO OF OUR GRANDCHILDREN TO THE NORTH CAROLINA ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY IN ASHEBORO, N.C.. ON THE MORNING OF JULY 7 WE HEADED SOUTH FROM CENTRAL VIRGINIA ON ROUTE 29. THE VIBRATION HAD TURNED INTO A STEADY THUMPING AS I HAD PROCEEDED TO THIS POINT. I VISUALLY INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AGAIN AND NOTICED A TEAR ALONG THE INSIDE SIDE WALL OF THE PASSENGER REAR WHEEL. ON CLOSER INSPECTION I NOTICED THAT THE TEAR WAS ALONG THE EDGE OF THE TREAD AND COULD BE PULLED AWAY FROM THE TIRE. WE DECIDED TO CALL AAA AND HAVE THEM CHANGE OUT THE TIRE FOR US. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED 4/14/01 ON THE WAY BACK TO FLORIDA FROM PA. WE WERE ON I-77 TRAVELING APPROX. 60 MPH. WHEN A NOTICEABLE VIBRATION STARTED. WE SLOWED DOWN AND PULLED OFF AT THE NEXT EXIT. ON INSPECTION THE LEFT INSIDE DUEL HAD EXPERIENCED SEPARATION OF TREAD FROM THE TIRE. TIRE PRESSURE HAD BEEN SET AT MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED PRESSURE. THE TIRE APPEARED TO HOLD AIR PRESSURE. UPON ARRIVING HOME WE TOOK PICTURES OF THE TIRE AND RETURNED IT TO OUR FIRESTONE DEALER WHO PRO-RATED IT. YESTERDAY (6/17/01 WE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE RIGHT SIDE INSIDE DUEL. THIS TIME THE TIRE WOULD NOT HOLD ANY AIR PRESSURE. OUR MILEAGE ON THIS TIRE WAS 19,126. WE FIND IT ODD THAT WE HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED THIS KIND OF PROBLEM WITH OTHER RIGS WE HAVE OWNED. WE WERE DRIVING NORTH OF PHILADELPHIA, PA ON 08/10/00. THE LEFT FRONT TIRE SUDDENLY WENT FLAT. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. I OBSERVED THAT THE TIRE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. JACOBS TOWING WAS CONTACTED TO COME TO THE ROADSIDE AND PROVIDE A TIRE CHANGE. (COST $50) WHEN WE ARRIVED IN MARYLAND, 08/12/00, I TOOK THE FLAT TO FIRESTONE AT 1492-94 ANNAPOLIS RD., ODENTON, MD. A MAN WEARING A BLUE SHIRT WITH RED LETTERS "FIRESTONE" NO ID TAG, ASSISTED US. HE GAVE THE WORK ORDER TO JEREMY TO CHECK THE TIRE FOR ANY ROAD HAZARD DAMAGE. THERE WAS NONE. JEREMY FOUND A LEAK NEAR THE VALVE STEM. JEREMY SAID THE VALVE STEM IS SPLIT AND ALSO NOTICED A "BUBBLE" ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE TIRE APPROXIMATELY 4-6 INCHES FROM THE VALVE STEM. THIS WAS SEPERATE FROM THE DAMAGE THAT THE TIRE SUSTAINED WHILE THE VEHICLE SAT ON THE FLAT TIRE. JEREMY REMOVED THE TIRE FROM THE RIM AND INSPECTED THE ENTIRE TIRE. HE OBSERVED A LARGE PATCH OF RUBBER MISSING FROM THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE IN THE EXACT LOCATION AS THE OUTSIDE "BUBBLE." JEREMY SAID, "IT LOOKS LIKE YOUR TIRE EXPLODED ON THE INSIDE, BUT I NEED TO LET MY MANAGER SEE THIS." THE MANAGER SAID, "THAT'S NATURAL." THE MANAGER PROCEEDED TO TRY TO FIND VARIOUS REASONS FOR THE DEFORMITY INSIDE THE TIRE, NONE OF WHICH HE COULD FULLY EXPLAIN. HE EVEN WENT AS FAR AS TO STATE THAT SOMEONE MUST HAVE STOOD ON THE VALVE STEM, THUS CAUSING THE DAMAGE. HE ALSO TRIED TO PROVE THAT THE HUBCAP CAUSED THE DAMAGE, WHICH I QUICKLY DISPROVED. THE MANAGER REFUSED TO EXCHANGE THE TIRES AND REFUSED TO GIVE ME HIS NAME UPON REQUEST. I PURCHASED A "SPARE" FOR $111.34. THIS IS THE SECOND TIRE THAT HAS BEEN REPLACED ON THE RV. THE FIRST HAD A DEFECTIVE TREAD. THE FIRESTONE DEALER IN HOUSTON, TX EXCHANGED IT. IT ALSO HAD THE SAME ID INFORMATION AS THIS TIRE. ALL THE TIRES ON THE RV ARE FROM THE VDIL PLANT. THE OTHER VEHICLE IS A TAURUS WHICH HAS HANDLES EVERYWHERE TO ASSIST CLIMBING INTO THE CAR. FINALLY WE ARE PUTTING ON RUNNING BOARDS AT OUR EXPENSE. THE DEALER REFERRED US TO VANTASTIKS WHICH IS A COMPANY THAT COULD ALTER OUR VEHICLE. AT VANTASTIKS WE WERE TOLD ABOUT THE MOTORISTS MOBILITY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM THAT FORD HAS. WE WERE NEVER TOLD ABOUT THIS PROGRAM INITIALLY. TODAY I WAS TOLD THAT THE IS NOT THE FIRST THING THEY THINK OF. I WOULD THINK THAT THE SAFETY OF THEIR PASSENGERS SHOULD BE PRIMARY AND ANYTHING THAT CAN INSURE THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT. THE HANDLES ARE ON THE PILLARS IN AN F150. THESE SHOULD ALSO BE ON THE E150. WE RECENTLY RETURNED FROM CALIFORNIA WHERE WE HAD A CHEVROLET ASTRO MINI VAN. THE STEP ON THAT VEHICLE WAS MUCH LOWER AND THERE WAS A HANDLE TO ASSIST CLIMBING INTO THE VEHICLE. THERE HAS NOT BEEN AN ACTUAL FAILURE OF THE DRIVER SEAT, PER SE. THE PROBLEM WITH THE SEAT IS THAT IT IS SITTING TOO HIGH TO COMFORTABLY REACH THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE. I'M FIVE FOOT NINE INCHES TALL AND THE HEAL OF MY FOOT DOES NOT REST ON THE FLOORBOARD WHILE I'M OPERATING THE GAS PEDAL OR BRAKE. IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL, I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE FOR VERY LONG WITHOUT MY FOOT FALLING ASLEEP DUE THO THE BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION FROM THE EDGE OF THE SEAT BEING FORCED INTO THE BACK OF MY LEG. BRAKE PADS "BURNED" AND ROTORS WARPED ON A 1999 FORD ECONOLINE. VEHICLE HAS 14930 MILES ON IT OF WHICH OVER 12000 MILES HAS BEEN FREEWAY LONG DISTANCE WITH MINIMAL BRAKE USEAGE. THE VEHICLE WHICH IS RATED FOR 8 PASSENGERS WITH LUGGAGE, AND FOR HEAVY DUTY TRAILER TOWING HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN WITH ANY HEAVY LOADS. ALL LONG DISTANCE DRIVING WITH 1 OR 2 PASSENGERS AND LIGHT LUGGAGE ONLY. NONETHELESS FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE FORD DEALER INSIST THIS IS NORMAL AND DOES NOT REPRESENT A SAFETY HAZARD AND THAT FORD HAS NO RESPONSIBILITY IN THIS REGARD. I BELIEVE THAT FORD HAS THE RESPONSIBILITY TO AT REPLACE THE SHODDY PARTS THAT THEY USED INITIALLY, TO FOREWARN CUSTOMERS THAT THEY WILL VERY LIKELY REQUIRE COSTLY BRAKE WORK AT VERY SHORT INTERVALS, AND THAT EVEN CAREFUL DRIVERS CAN NOT MAKE IT TO THE FIRST SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE WITHOUT SERIOUSLY DAMAGING THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT BRAKES. I SHUDDER TO THINK OF THE DANGER TO OCCUPANTS OF FULLY LOADED ECONOLINES USED ON A DAILY HEAVY DUTY BASIS. THE BRAKES UNDER THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES WOULD SEEM UNLIKELY TO LAST MORE THAN A FEW THOUSAND MILES.
