APPROXIMATELY 6 TIMES ON A 800 MILE ROAD TRIP WHEN IT WAS 90 DEGREES OR HOTTER IN THE AFTERNOON MY 1996 E350 MOTORHOME WOULD STOP RUNNING AT HIGHWAY SPEED STRANDING US IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION ON I40. AFTER SITTING IDLE FOR 30-60 MINUTES IT WOULD START AND RUN MAYBE 30 MILES AND STOP. IN THE COOL OF THE EVENING OR MORNING IT WOULD RUN AS LONG AS NEEDED. THE PROBLEM IS AN INADEQUATE FUEL PUMP WHICH IS WELL DOCUMENTED ON MANY INTERNET BLOGS. IN MID YEAR 1996 FORD UPGRADED TO A TURBINE FUEL PUMP WHICH I HAVE NOW PAID $450 TO INSTALL. THIS UPGRADE SOLVES THE PROBLEM. I WAS ALSO STRANDED AT MAJOR INTERSECTIONS ALSO. I READ THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM WHICH I CANNOT FIND. MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE ORIGINAL FUEL PUMP WAS A GEROTOR WHICH CAUSED CAVITATION OF FUEL WHICH CAUSED AIR TO REACH THE FUEL RAIL CAUSING THE VAPOR LOCK LIKE PROBLEM.

VEHICLE WAS PARKED, AND UPON ENTERING NOTICED THE SMELL OF AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. STARTED THE VEHICLE, ODOMETER WAS INOPERABLE AND VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, FOUND A BLOWN 15 AMP FUSE IN THE FUSE PANEL. REPLACED FUSE, ODOMETER CAME BACK ON AND VEHICLE SHIFTED OUT OF PARK. APPROXIMATELY 10 SECONDS LATER, THE SMELL OF BURNING WIRING WAS EVIDENT, AS WAS SMOKE FROM UNDER THE HOOD. PULLED THE FUSE BACK OUT, OPENED THE HOOD TO FIND THE BRAKE PRESSURE SWITCH ON FIRE, WHICH MELTED THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR AS WELL AS THE BATTERY CASING ALSO. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 FORD E-150. WHENEVER THE CONTACT STARTS THE ENGINE AND DEPRESSES THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE ENGINE BECOMES STUCK AT A HIGH RPM AND WILL NOT RETURN TO THE IDLE POSITION. THE FAILURE CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO EITHER SURGE FORWARD OR BACKWARDS DEPENDING ON WHAT GEAR IT IS IN AT THE TIME. THE ENGINE HAS TO BE TURNED OFF IN ORDER TO RESTORE THE VEHICLE TO A PROPER SPEED. IN ADDITION, THE BRAKES DO NOT HOLD OR STOP THE VEHICLE WHEN THEY ARE ENGAGED. THE FIRST TIME THIS FAILURE OCCURRED, THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A TREE AT 10 MPH. THERE WERE NO INJURIES; HOWEVER, THE REAR WINDOW WAS DAMAGED. THROUGH RESEARCH, THE CONTACT FOUND NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH THIS DEFECT ON THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL VEHICLES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP TWICE. DURING THE FIRST VISIT, THE MECHANIC CLEANED OUT THE ENGINE, ENGINE THROTTLE, AND CABLES. THE FAILURE WAS CORRECTED FOR TWO MONTHS BEFORE IT RECURRED AGAIN. DURING THE SECOND VISIT, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE SHOP AND THE MECHANIC CHECKED TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING WAS LUBRICATED PROPERLY. THE SHOP DID NOT GUARANTEE THAT THE FAILURE WOULD NOT RECUR. THE CONTACT BELIEVES THAT A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 152,000.

I WAS STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION WITH TRUCK IN GEAR AND CLUTCH PEDAL DOWN, ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CLUTCH RELEASED WITH THE PEDAL STILL DOWN CAUSING THE TRUCK TO LURCH INTO THE STREET ABOUT 15 FT BEFORE I COULD STOP WITH THE BRAKES. THE CARS IN THE STREET WERE ABLE TO AVOID ME BUT I WAS VERY SHAKEN. I FOUND THE PROBLEM WAS THE "CLUTCH ROD END PLASTIC BUSHING AND RETAINER" HAD FAILED ALLOWING THE CLUTCH TO RELEASE WITHOUT THE PEDAL. THIS WAS REPLACED BUT FAILED AGAIN 6 MONTHS LATER. FORTUNATELY I ALWAYS KEEP THE TRUCK IN NEUTRAL WHEN STOPPED NOW SO IT WAS ONLY AN INCONVENIENCE. CHECKING THE INTERNET FOR A FIX I FOUND SEVERAL COMPANIES THAT MAKE A REPLACEMENT ASSEMBLY FOR THIS BECAUSE OF ALL THE FAILURES. I HAVE BEEN KEEPING THE "ROD END" IN PLACE WITH WIRE AND ALWAYS KEEP IN NEUTRAL TO PREVENT ANOTHER FAILURE BUT HAVE ORDERED A REPLACEMENT ASSEMBLY AN EBAY COMPANY TO PREVENT THIS VERY DANGEROUS FAILURE FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH WAS LEAKING FLUID. THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL ON OTHER FORD VEHICLES. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER, THE REPAIR WERE MADE FOR A FEE. ALSO EVERY 25000 MILES, THE OIL PAN GASKET NEEDED TO BE CHANGED DUE A SMALL LEAK. THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THIRD, THE EXHAUST AND INTAKE MANIFOLDS WERE LEAKING CAUSING A NOXIOUS SMELL INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO THE SAME SERVICE DEALER. THE DEALER REPLACED BOTH MANIFOLDS, AND DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS AN OIL LEAK DRIPPING ONTO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM.

ON JUNE 25TH I CHANGED THE BATTERY ON MY 1996 FORD E150 BECAUSE THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. ABOUT A HALF AN HOUR LATER I HEARD THE ALARM GOING OFF. WHEN I WENT OUTSIDE THERE WAS WHITE SMOKE COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I RAISED THE HOOD AND THE SENDING UNIT ON THE MASTER CYLINDER FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS SMOKING AND THE WHITE SMOKE WAS INCREASING BY THE SECOND. I PULLED THE WIRES THAT WERE LEADING TO IT AND THE SMOKED STARTED TO DISAPATE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT RUNNING AND THE IGNITION WAS TURNED OFF. ON JUNE 29, I WAS WATCHING THE JANE PAULY SHOW ON CNN. THEY WERE REPORTING ABOUT A PROBLEM WITH THIS SAME PART ON THE FORD F150 PICKUPS. I BELIEVE THAT IF MY ALARM HAD NOT SOUNDED MY VEHICLE WOULD HAVE CAUGHT ON FIRE LIKE THE PICKUP TRUCKS IN THE REPORT. AS OF YET I STILL HAVE NOT REPAIRED THE VEHICLE AND ALL PARTS ARE AS THEY WERE ON THE DAY OF THE INCEDENT. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TURNED OFF AND PARKED FOR APPROXIMATELY EIGHT HOURS WHEN THE FIRE OCCURRED. 1. I WAS TRAVELING A 35 MPH ON A STRAIGHT ROAD DURING THE DAYLIGHT HOURS. THE ROAD WAS DRY. THE WEATHER WAS SUNNY, AND THERE WAS VERY LITTLE TRAFFIC IN A TWO LANE ROAD. AS I APPROACHED STANDING TRAFFIC AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT I BEGAN TO SLOW GRADUALLY WITH ENGINE BRAKING. AS I APPOACHED THE STOPPED CAR I BEGAN TO TOUCH THE BRAKE PEDAL, AND IMMEDIATELY NOTICED NO BRAKING EFFECT. I THAN PRESSED THE PEDAL A COUPLE MORE INCHES, AND STILL THERE WAS LITTLE BRAKING EFFECT. I THEN PRESSED AS HARD AS I COULD, AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SLOW GRADUALLY, BUT NOT IN TIME TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR STOPPED AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT. THERE WAS MINOR DAMAGE DONE TO THE STANDING VEHICLE, BUT ONLY BECAUSE I WAS TRAVELING SO SLOWLY AND HAD BEGUN TO ANTICIPATE THE STOP IN PLENTY OF TIME. HAVING BEEN AN AUTOMOBILE MECHANIC IN YEARS PAST, I DETERMINED THAT THE FAULT WAS IN THE VACUUM BOOSTER OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZED REPAIR SHOP AND HAD THE BRAKE SYSTEM EVALUATED. THEY EXAMINED THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM AND COULD FIND NO REASON FOR THE FAILURE. THEY SAID THAT IT COULD HAVE BEEN A MOMENTARY FAILURE OF THE ABS OR VACUUM BOOSTER SYSTEMS, BUT THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE THE FAULT UNLESS IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE THEY WERE TESTING THE VEHICLE. THE PROBLEM WAS DETECTED BEFORE COMPLETE FAILURE, WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A FIRE. VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO GARAGE. WHEN TRANSMISSION WAS REBUILT A SEAL HAD TO BE REPLACE. I DID SOME INVESTIGATING MYSELF AND FOUND THE FOLLOWING : NAPA PADS MEASURED 0.719 ; ALBANY 0.720 ; WAGNER 0.717 ; WAGNER HEAVY DUTY 0.738 AAND MOTORCRAFT 0.738. I REPORTED THESE FINDINGS TO MS. RAMSEY AND ASKED WHY THEIR PADS WERE NEARLY 0.040 THICKER THAN ANY OTHER MANUFACTURER, BUT STILL HAVE NO ANSWER. THE LAST CONTACT I RECEIVED FROM MS. THIS IS THE SAME SWITCH AS IN 93 LINCOLN TOWNCARS AND MANY OTHER FORD CARS AND TRUCKS. IT WAS DESIGNED BY TEXAS INSTURMENTS TO BE WIRE AS SWITCHED BUT FORD INSTALLED IT AS WIRED ALWAYS HOT. SYMPTOM IS THE ABS LIGHT ON THE DASH COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY FOR A FEW WEEKS, THEN STEADY. WHEN THE LIGHT COMES ON, THE ABS IS INOPERATIVE (UNSAFE CONDITION). THE 1ST HCU FAILED WITHIN 2 YEARS ($550 TO REPLACE). THE SECOND FAILED JUST OVER A YEAR LATER. THE DEALER MECHANIC SAYS THAT HE SEES *LOTS* OF THESE ($550 TO REPLACE EACH OCCURRENCE). FORD CLAIMS NO RESPONSIBILITY. I HAVE A CLASS C MOTORHOME BASED ON THE SAME '96 FORD E350 CHASSIS. THE ABS LIGHT IS COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY. I BELIEVE THE HCU'S THAT FORD IS INSTALLING ARE DEFECTIVE AND THEY SHOULD DESIGN A BETTER ONE (THAT LASTS LONGER THAN 1-2 YEARS). AFTER DISCUSSION WITH FORD AND DEALER, THEY REPLACED TANK UNDER "EXTENDED WARRANTY" BUT CHARGED US FOR LABOR COSTS. BOTH WERE REAR MOUNTED AT THE TIME OF FAILURE AND HAD APPROPRIATE INFLATION PRESUURE (AROUND 38 PSI). BOTH FAILURES OCCURED ON INTERSTATE AT MODERATE SPEEDS (60 - 65 MPH) IN THE EVENING AFTER THE HEAT OF THE DAY. FIRST FAILURE OCCURED 10/21/1999. THE SECOND FAILURE OCCURED 7/25/00. THESE TIRES ARE THE SAME SIZE AND WERE MANUFACTURED AT THE SAME FACTORY AS THE RECALLED FIRESTONE ATX AND WILDERNESS TIRES. ON JUNE 28, 2000, MY WIFE MADE A LEFT HAND TURN. AS SHE WAS TURNING THE ENGINE WENT COMPLETLY DEAD, POWER STEERING GOES OUT AND A YELLOW LIQUID SHOOTS OUT FROM THE STEERING COLUMN ON TO THE DASHBOARD AND ON MY WIFE'S LEGS CAUSING THE SKIN TO BURN. THIS WAS ACCOMPANIED WITH NOXIOUS FUMES CAUSING MY WIFE AND TWO OTHER PASSENGERS TO COUGH AND TO EVACUATE THE VAN. THE VAN STARTED BACK UP AFTER THIS INCIDENT. ON JULY 2 & 3, 2000 WE TOOK THE VAN TO A1 AUTO CARE IN HOBE SOUND, FL. THEY CHECKED FOR POTIENTIAL ANTIFREEZE LINE LEAKS, CHECKED THE AIR BAG COMPONENTS AND DISCOVERED SOME OF THE YELLOW LIQUID ON THE STEERING COLUMN. THEY WERE UNABLE TO SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE AIR BAG ITSELF. THEY CALLED THE FORD TECH. SUPPORT LINE AND COULD NOT COME UP WITH ANYTHING SIMILAR TO THIS SITUATION. ON JULY 6, I CALLED THE FORD CORP. THEY DOCUMENTED THE EVENT AND DID SOME RESEARCH TO SEE IF SIMILAR INCIDENTS HAVE HAPPENED. THEY CLAIM TO HAVE NOTHING ON RECORD. THEY SUGGESTED THAT I CONTACT NHTSA. ON AUGUST 7, 2000, THE SAME INCIDENT HAPPENED TO THE VAN AGAIN. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SITUATION. THE YELLOW LIQUID CAUSES BURNING OF THE SKIN AND THE FUMES CAUSES ONE TO CHOKE. THERE IS DEFINITELY A DEFECTIVE PART RELATING THE AIR BAG SYSTEM. AS A FORMER FACTORY SERVICE REP FOR FORD AND A FULLY CERTIFIED ASE MECHANIC FROM MANY YEARS AGO, I SCRUTINIZED THE TIRES INTENSELY WITH MY EYES AND HANDS FINDING NOTHING ABNORMAL. WE DECIDED TO PRESS ON TO DAYTONA BEACH TO FIND A TIRE STORE AND HAVE THE VIBRATION CHECKED OUT. WITHIN 1 MILE OF PULLING ONTO THE FREEWAY AGAIN, THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE SHREDDED AND DAMAGED THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND FENDER PAINT ON THE VEHICLE. WE SUMMONSED A SERVICE TRUCK AND HAD THE SPARE TIRE REPLACED. WHILE IN ORLANDO, WE ORDERED A NEW TIRE AND HAD IT REPLACED. RETURNING HOME WE STOPPED AT A WEIGH STATION TO SEE JUST HOW HEAVY THE VEHICLE WAS WITH JUST THE FOUR OF US IN IT AND FOUND THAT WE WERE WITHIN 300# OF THE MAX GROSS WEIGHT ALLOWED FOR THE FRONT TIRES. THE TIRE PRESSURES HAVE BEEN MAINTAINED CLOSELY AND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN ALIGNED REGULARLY. THERE WAS NOW ABNORMAL WEAR PATTERNS ON THE TIRE. WHILE TRAVELING AT 45 MPH, I LOST THE ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE. THIS TRUCK WAS A 4WD CONVERSION WHICH WAS DONE BY A COMPANY CALLED QUIGLEY, IN MANCHESTER, PA. THIS CONVERSION WAS APPROVED BY FORD AND THE TRUCK WAS PURCHASED WITH THE CONVERSION. AFTER THE STEERING FELL APART, I WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL TRUCK AND HAD AN ACCIDENT. APPROXIMATELY SIX MONTHS LATER, THE TRUCK, AGAIN, WENT OUT OF CONTROL AFTER HITTING A SLIGHT DIP IN THE ROAD. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION WITH THE DEALER, WHO CALLED QUIGLEY, QUIGLEY SAID THEY KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEM AS IT HAD HAPPENED ON THEIR AMBULANCE 4WD CONVERSIONS. THERE WAS A KIT THEY COULD SUPPLY THAT WOULD FIX THIS PROBLEM. I PURCHASED THE KIT , WHICH WAS A STABILIZER KIT, AND HAD THE DEALER INSTALL IT AND HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM SINCE. I MET SOME EMT'S FROM RIDDLE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, OUTSIDE MEDIA, PA. AND THEY WERE DRIVING A 4WD AMBULANCE CONVERSION VAN FROM FORD AND QUIGLEY. I ASKED THEM IF THEY EVER EXPERIENCED WHAT I DID AND THEY SAID THEY DID, THAT THEIR SUPERVISOR HAD TO SEND THE AMBULANCES BACK TO QUIGLEY, AND FINALLY, QUIGLEY WAS ABLE TO FIND OUT THE PROBLEM AND INSTALL A STABILIZER KIT. I HAVE SINCE MET OTHER PEOPLE WITH FORD VANS AND QUIGLEY 4WD CONVERSIONS, WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS. SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT THIS AS I WAS LUCKY AND WASN'T KILLED, BUT IT IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE QUIGLEY CONVERSION. ITS EVEN MORE OF A DANGER WHEN AMBULANCES, FULL OF PEOPLE, GO OUT OF CONTROL BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. THE LOSS OF CONTROL OF MY VAN CAUSED AN ACCIDENT IN WHICH SIX PEOPLE COULD HAVE DIED.
