I recently took my 2019 X5 to the BMW dealership because of the recall (Engine starter) and the code P0456 (NVLD Minor Leak Fault). At the same time, there's a warning that says, "Oil at a minimum level. Add 1 liter immediately". I have the 3 Year Oil Plan and asked them to put some oil, but the dealership said that they can't add oil because the oil level wouldn’t read properly. They told me they couldn’t diagnose it without charging me an extra 300 for further testing. Then, I read a lot of threads online and it seems that BMW quietly changed the pump to an all-metal design around 2020 but never issued a recall or extended warranty for the earlier cars. There's a lot of customers complaining with the B58TU engine found in many 2019–2021 BMWs (X5 xDrive40i, 540i, 340i, etc.). The variable oil pump uses a plastic internal adjusting ring that cracks over time. When it fails, oil pressure becomes unstable or is lost, often with little warning. A common early symptom is the oil level sensor test failing and stopping around 12-20%. In the worst cases, it can lead to sudden engine damage or the car shutting down while driving. I called up my mechanic, and he said that this is a common problem and it could be an oil pump issue that needs to be replaced. I asked him for a quote and he said approximately 5k or more. The starter on my BMW failed, and it overheated and damaged my alternator to the point that I needed to replace it. The dealer and independent service center confirmed that this was the cause, but BMW is refusing to reimburse the cost of the alternator replacement. I was at the exit of a highway and could not even put the car in neutral, so my safety was significantly at risk.

The AC evaporator failed due to a known manufacturing defect common across the BMW G-chassis platform (G05, G07, G30). This has created two severe safety hazards: The refrigerant leak causes the windshield to fog up instantly and unexpectedly while driving, completely obstructing my visibility and nearly causing an accident. Chemical fumes and oil from the leaking evaporator are entering the cabin through the vents, causing dizziness and respiratory irritation for the occupants. BMW is aware of this systemic issue through numerous owner reports and petitions but refuses to issue a recall or provide assistance. This is a critical component failure that directly impacts vehicle safety and occupant health.

I am writing to report a significant safety issue associated with BMW vehicles equipped with the B58TU engine, particularly the 2019-2021 models. These vehicles feature an oil pump containing an internal plastic component responsible for regulating oil pressure. There have been numerous instances of this part fracturing in the field, leading to a sudden loss of oil pressure. The failure predominantly occurs during cold starts in low temperatures. When this occurs, oil pressure can fluctuate erratically or be lost completely, often with minimal warning. Potential warning signs include difficulties in electronically measuring the oil level, abnormal oil pressure readings, or sudden drivetrain malfunction alerts. These issues can escalate quickly, resulting in engine shutdown or severe damage due to oil starvation. This situation poses a serious risk, as the vehicle may become inoperable without warning while driving or immediately after startup. Such failures are particularly hazardous when vehicles become immobilized in traffic or during winter conditions, leaving occupants vulnerable to harsh temperatures while awaiting roadside assistance. The replacement of the oil pump necessitates extensive disassembly and typically incurs a cost of $6,000-$8,000, assuming no engine damage has occurred. A significant concern is that owners cannot easily ascertain whether their vehicle is equipped with the original plastic pump or a revised metal component. BMW's VIN-based parts lookup now indicates updated components even if the original plastic parts are still installed. Additionally, the original plastic part number has been removed from dealer networks. Failures have been reported across multiple production years, and the full extent of affected vehicles remains uncertain. Given that this condition can lead to abrupt vehicle disablement without adequate warning—especially in cold weather—this situation warrants investigation as a potential safety-related defect.

Subject: 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i – Oil Pump Defect Causing Oil Measurement Failure and Safety Risk I am reporting a safety defect in my 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i with the 3.0L B58 inline-6 engine. The vehicle currently has approximately 70,000 miles. The vehicle is unable to properly measure or display engine oil level due to incorrect oil readings, which have been attributed to a failing oil pump assembly containing internal plastic components. Because this vehicle does not have a traditional dipstick, the electronic oil level monitoring system is the only way to verify proper oil level. Due to the defective oil pump design, I am unable to confirm whether the engine has sufficient oil. This creates a serious safety concern because: •The vehicle may be operating with low oil pressure without accurate warning •Sudden oil pressure loss could cause engine shutdown while driving •Loss of power at highway speeds could result in an accident •Catastrophic engine failure could occur without proper oil monitoring This is not normal wear and tear. BMW has reportedly updated the oil pump design in newer model years to use metal internal components, suggesting awareness of a design weakness. However, no recall has been issued for 2019 models. An oil pump that prevents accurate oil level measurement and may fail prematurely presents a significant safety hazard. I respectfully request that this defect be formally investigated and that BMW be required to issue a recall to replace the defective oil pump assembly with the updated metal design.

The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 MPH, the red oil light suddenly illuminated and the messages "Stop Carefully and Turn Off Engine", “Engine Oil Pressure Too Low", "Continued Driving will Result in Engine Damage". The vehicle was towed to the local mechanic, who discovered that the engine oil was black and thick. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer, who confirmed that the engine oil was thick and dark, and the engine needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was 85,000.

BMW knowingly did NOT NOTIFY it's 2019 BMW X5 M40i (engine B58) vehicle owners. This is in reference to the faulty design and made plastic engine oil pump. It has been known to fail prematurely due to weaken parts. Some analysis done was from certain oil viscosity's applying additional unneeded stressful pressures. This later was recognized by BMW and a newer design and/or metal sturdier one had taken it's place in subsequent model years starting in 2020. Some owners were able to remediate the oil pump failure and new replacement either covered under intact warranties, and some were covered through quieter negotiations with BMW Customer Care's authorizations. To my understanding, no recalls were made nor were any techical service bulletins (TSB) made to it's owners. I don't see how BMW can be allowed to get away with an issue of safety which could cause a catastrophic failure of the affected engine? Under the circumstances, BMW should be fully reimbursing me for the repairs here, and be glad there were NO serious injuries OR worse, DEATHS! I have been in contact with their Customer Care and nothing has been done to date.

Premature oil pump failure. 2019 BMW x5 with only 46k miles has been diagnosed with an oil pump failure. Vehicle needed to be quickly pulled over and shut off to avoid catastrophic engine failure or engine seize. If this happens on the highway or at any speed the vehicle will lose power and be unsafe to control likely ending in an accident. This is a known Issue. BMW produced the vehicle with a flawed oil pump design that has a plastic ring around the impeller. The ring deteriorates and cracks leading to pump failure and loss of oil pressure It is only on limited models early 2019 X5. BMW redesigned with an all metal pump quietly. This issue needs to be addressed with BMW as it is unsafe for these family vehicles to be on the road with such a significant risk to its passengers and others. The failure happens with little to no warning. When contacting BMW they told me they would not consider helping with repairs. The repair for this part is upward of $8k which in turn will likely limit consumers ability to fix proactively. This is totally unacceptable and needs to be addressed by the NHTSA directly with BMW. The engine warning system came on and warned of low oil pressure. Knowing the oil level was good I stopped the vehicle to check oil leaks. Found none. Knowing engine mechanics I assumed it was a faulty oil pump. had it towed to BMW and told it was so. The replacement would be $8,000. Found out after lengthy research that the oil pump of the 2019 X5 (which I have) was made with plastic internal parts that would be a matter of when not if, the plastic parts would fail because the acidic nature of used oil. Presented this info to BMW and they lowered the price to $3986.16. Then I discovered BMW knew about the problem and changed the oil pump design from 2020 on.

Engine Starter overheating. Car won't start until engine cools down. Car would not let my shift into neutral in order to move to a safe location. Was stuck in front of several cars in an unsafe location. No warning message showed up. Car was just inspected and serviced with no indication that this was a problem. The emergency call system and hands free microphone does not work due to the telematic control unit getting wet as a result of the shark fin antenna leaking. As a result I cannot rely on communication through this system in the event of an emergency which was one of the features that lead me to the decision to buy this car. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer. The first warning lamp brought to the attention of the dealer in February.

Issue started about 6 - 9 months ago.

I am reporting a recurring safety-related defect with the infotainment/iDrive head-unit in my 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i. The central display repeatedly goes completely black or shows “No Signal” while the vehicle is otherwise drivable. When this happens, iDrive is unusable and I lose: 1. Rearview camera and visual parking aids 2. Parking sensor visuals 3. Navigation and key vehicle information 4. Access to settings that only exist in iDrive BMW service says this is due to the vehicle’s “age” and recommends a full head-unit (hardware) replacement at my expense, even though this is a software-driven system. A previous identical failure on this car resolved on its own with no hardware change, which strongly suggests a software/firmware defect, not a worn-out part. This problem is widespread, not just my car. Many BMW owners report the same black-screen/“No Signal” iDrive behavior on similar models and years, often after software updates and even after multiple head-unit replacements, with no lasting fix. One example thread: [XXX] As a long-time BMW owner, it is extremely frustrating that BMW has not given a convincing engineering explanation or solution and keeps falling back on expensive hardware swaps. 1. I am reporting a serious safety defect involving the oil pump assembly on my 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i. While driving at low speed in normal conditions, a sudden dashboard warning appeared stating: “Engine oil pressure too low — stop carefully.” I immediately pulled over and shut off the engine. My vehicle had been serviced by an authorized BMW dealership less than one week earlier, and no faults or issues were identified. There were no warning signs or symptoms prior to the failure. An independent licensed repair facility inspected the vehicle after the incident and confirmed that the oil pump had failed due to a defective plastic internal component used in the pump’s design. The failed parts are available for inspection upon request. This failure created a significant safety risk, as sudden loss of oil pressure can cause engine seizure, loss of power steering, loss of braking assist, and an inability to safely control the vehicle. Had this occurred at highway speeds, the consequences could have been severe. I have since learned that this exact issue has been reported by other owners of 2019 BMW X5 vehicles and other BMW models using the B58 engine, which were equipped with an oil pump containing plastic internal drive components prone to cracking or separating. BMW appears to have updated the oil pump design to a metal version in 2020 and later models, suggesting the manufacturer was aware of the weakness of the earlier design. The defect was confirmed by an independent service center. The vehicle had also been inspected by BMW one week prior during scheduled service, yet no issues were detected. while stopped in traffic on a freeway in fast lane, the vehicle was in the "stop/go" mode. When I pressed the accelerator, the engine failed to start. On multiple attempts engine would not start and I could smell electrical burn. The CHP was on site and we attempted to push the car to the side and out of the fast lane. However, since the engine would not start, there was no way to shift the car into Neutral gear. This is a design flaw and could lead a serious injury of fatality if the drive is stuck on the freeway and unable to move car. Even with Tow Truck, the car had to be dragged onto the truck bed. This is related to recall no. 25V-644. The recall should be elevated to "critical" status.

The contact owns a 2019 BMW X5. The contact stated that while his wife was driving approximately 30-40 MPH, the message “Low Engine Oil” and to pull over to avoid engine destruction was displayed. The driver pulled over. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the internal parts of the oil filter made of plastic had deteriorated. The dealer determined that the engine needed to be taken apart to replace the filter. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and covered half the cost of the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

Took it to dealer and got evporater cleaned vut smaell returns again in 2 months. Evaporator leak is very common. Most owners have had this issue fixed and repaired at $7k cost of out of warranty. BMW dealer ship admits issue with this year of bmw but declines to fix it for free. bMW itself ignores all the conversations bout it.

a concern regarding my BMW x5 it’s a 2019 x50i it’s my only vehicle that I have to get to and from work and drive my family around. I have been having starting issues at random times I can go a week no issues than randomly. My vehicle doesn’t want to start. Also, I have engine codes that are the same ones that apply to other recalls my starter is my main concern because it is an unsafe situation in certain circumstances because it’s happened at a light due to the auto stop switch I have to turn it off so that problem wouldn’t occur anymore because it also happened on the freeway during traffic that was a scary scenario when I had my family with me luckily it did turn on as I was steering out the way of traffic, I love the car unfortunately it is giving me safety concerns ,I seen there is a recall on NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V-576 subject : Starter Motor May Fail and Overheat according to this my vehicle meets all these criteria’s I need help with further assistance please if you can and thank you for your time.

Cylinder Head Assembly- Valve Cover $4280.83 3. center console control panel $3051.93 4. transfer case replacement TBD 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i has multiple major component failures at 70,000 miles. Oil pump failed causing loss of oil-level monitoring. The cylinder head assembly was diagnosed with oil consumption, the transfer case exhibited driveline shuddering, and the center console control panel developed internal electrical faults that affect vital vehicle components. All have been diagnosed by BMW of North Haven, CT. The oil pump and transfer case failures have created potential loss of engine lubrication and vehicle control putting my safety at risk. The oil-level test aborts at 16% making it impossible to verify oil quantity or pressure while driving. The shuddering occurs during low-speed turns and acceleration. BMW North America reviewed my case and approved goodwill coverage for transfer-case fluid change ALL other safety-related repairs have been denied. Supporting BMW Service Bulletins: •SIB 27 02 20: Jerking or Shuddering from Driveline xDrive Transfer Case ATX13-X (faulty factory oil specification). •SIB 11 03 17: N20/N26 Engine Timing Chain and Oil-Pump Drive Chain Warranty Extension (pattern of oil-pump failures in prior engines). •SIB B01 13 23: Front Center Console Cupholder Liquid Ingress (electrical faults from liquid intrusion in 2019–2022 G05 X5). •SIB 65 12 22: Roof-Mounted Antenna Housing Seal Not Adhering (water ingress from shark-fin antenna affecting interior electronics). Note: I paid out of pocket to replace and reprogram theTelematics Communication Box (TCB) due to faulty seal around shark fin. A class action lawsuit is currently in happening for this exact issue in California. These issues are not normal wear and tear. They represent premature mechanical and electrical failures on a well-maintained vehicle as well as posing a safety risk to me and other drivers.

MY STARTER MOTOR OVERHEATED AND MY CAR WOULD NOT START AND MY CAR INDICATED THE FLUIDS AND COMPONENTS WERE OVERHEATED - MY DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM WITH A VIDEO THEY SENT ME. IF I WAS STILL DRIVING THE CAR, I DON'T KNOW WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ME MY DAUGHTER AND HUSBAND IN THE VEHICLE. i CALLED MY SERVICE REP AND THE DEALERSHIP IS LOOKING INTO IT AS MY VIN DOES NOT HAVE THE RECALL. NOTHING WAS WRONG AND NO LIGHTS WERE ON THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THE CAR NOT STARTING. I HAD BEEN DRIVING IT FOR ABOUT 25 MINUTES. In MAY of this year, not even 6 months ago, they had to replace a "heat management module", which cost me $2500 and they said it is not related. They found 8 fault codes at a frequency of 255. The dealership is telling me this is not related, but I have a hard time believing that.

The contact owns a 2019 BMW X5. The contact stated that while attempting to cold-start the vehicle, the contact needed several attempts to start the vehicle. The contact stated that several times, the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The contact stated that while making several attempts to start the vehicle, the message "System Overheated - Restarting Engine Possible After Cooling" was displayed on the instrument cluster, and the contact had to wait 120 seconds before further attempts to restart the vehicle were possible. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the starter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed by the dealer that there was a recall for the failure, NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V644000 (Electrical System), and the VIN was covered under the recall. However, the VIN tool showed no recall related to the VIN. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

The electronic oil level sensor was unable to complete an oil level measurement on the iDrive screen. Diagnostic inspection at a BMW Dealership (Mt. Kiso) and EuroTech Auto Repair (Larchmont, NY) revealed that the oil pump had degraded internally, specifically due to failure of plastic components. All Sensors were working fine and showed no faults. This failure could not be detected by regular maintenance and posed a risk to engine reliability and potential sudden loss of lubrication. The car had approx 55,000 miles, was purchased purchased after my 3-year lease (original owner of new vehicle), and the incident occurred during normal use. There were no warning lights or symptoms before the oil measurement stopped working. This defect appears to be a design/materials issue affecting other similar vehicles. The failed oil pump has been replaced at my expense. I am concerned this part presents a broader safety and reliability risk and should be considered for recall.

I noticed one of my daytime running lights on the driver’s side laser headlight had turned yellow, instead of white like the others. I took the vehicle to the dealership and they said that the LED module that powers that daytime running light has overheated and caused the light tube to burn and melt. The dealership advised that the passenger side is also slowly starting to do the same thing. The repair the dealership recommended is to replace both headlights, at a cost of almost $18k! I’ve seen numerous BMWs on the roads with this same issue, and this should be addressed by BMW as a design flaw. If these modules are burning plastic pieces inside the housing, they could start a fire if they get hot enough.

While driving down the Long Island Expressway at around 60 miles per hour, the retractable part of my panoramic sun roof shattered. It felt like an explosion. Luckily, the sunroof and cloth cover was fully extended so the glass didn't fall in the car. The traffic was light, no one in front of me and wasn't driving under any structure. Emergency Call System Failure!! My 2019 BMW x5 xdrive M50 has the failure from the Telematic Control Module like thousands of other people. This needs to be a recall and shouldn’t have to pay $1500-3000 out of pocket for something that is a manufacture problem. Apparently water gets in the shark fin area and causing the module to fail!

The oil pump contains a plastic housing that fractured during regular use. (Yes, I did retain the part for inspection and can include photos of the defect here). Yes, the problem has been confirmed by my mechanic and the general public with multiple posts and videos shared widely across the internet and in vehicle forums. This failure caused the engine to lose oil pressure abruptly. Had this occurred at highway speeds or in heavy traffic, it could have resulted in a serious accident. BMW is aware of the problem and has redesigned the oil pumps for all X5s starting in 2020. There is no real warning for this potential failure which would cause the engine to cease. The problem is most commonly diagnosed by checking the oil level via the I-Drive System electronically, (there is no dipstick for these cars). The oil level cannot be provided on the screen due to significant pressure fluctuations caused by the damaged oil pump- and that's how you know you're at risk of engine failure. There has been no recall for the 2019 vehicles. All 2019 BMWs with the B58 engine, (and the Toyota Supra), include this dangerous and expensive design flaw and I believe a recall should be issued; the majority of these cars are still on the road. I estimate the total number of cars to be 250,000 cars. My oil pump had to be replaced or the car would be rendered undriveable. The estimate from BMW dealership #1 exceeded $11,000; the estimate from BMW dealership #2 exceeded $8,000. The car has less than 70,000 miles on it and this is a known issue for this model year.

Recently purchased a 2019 BMW X5 xdrive40i with 77k miles, after only owning for 3 weeks after a heavy rain storm. My dash lit up with “Emergency call system malfunction”, upon review online it seems to be a common issue with these BMW models and no recall has been issued. The sos malfunction causes the vehicle not to function properly and unable to use the integrated idrive head unit system. It also dials emergency services on its own and won’t let me end call. After taking it to bmw dealership they found the telematics module battery to be low and suggested replacing. Previous owner had similar issue back in January of 2023 and the shark fin antenna by the roof was replaced , resealed and TCB telematics unit replaced. So only after 2 weeks of replacing the TCB battery, same issue appeared again after a heavy rain storm. I took it back to bmw for diagnose and they had to have one of there engineers test it and found out the actual sos button ecu system unit to have a short causing the sos malfunction and it dialing emergency services on its own. Vehicle is not driveable and has been at bmw they are trying to charge me additional $1,547.58 plus taxes and fees for the repair. I feel as if this is a defect on bmw and should be addressed and issued as an recall for there customers.

The emergency call warning on the dash was activated. GPS and Heads-up display no longer functioned correctly. BMW Dealership replaced TCB2 Box and battery at a cost of $2956.63. In researching this issue found numerous complaints from other owners. Contacted BMW and was told they were not responsible, car was out of warranty (4yr / 50,000 mi). This is an electronic component that is positioned in the least hostile environment of the vehicle. It has NO moving parts, is located in a dry / protected area (above the headliner), has NO knobs to turn / buttons to push / or screens to touch and is not subject to normal wear and tear. One of 2 things seem to be the case: This is a rare failure of this component - in which case I would think BMW and the manufacturer would be not only interested to investigate but also responsible. This is a regular failure of this component and since it is an integral part of the car's safety system BMW does not want to acknowledge a known defect.

The screen remained on but I could not start the car. This has only happened in the city when I am driving at a speed of up to 15 miles/hr. under comfort mode with the auto/stop feature on. This happened about 5 times on different dates where my car shut off but the screen was on. My car shut down in the middle of traffic, causing more traffic and an unsafe situation. Since then, I have turned off the auto/stop feature and have not yet encountered the problem again.

I could have been left stranded in the middle of traffic, increasing the risk of a collision that could have caused injury to myself and others. If the malfunction had occurred in a remote location, I could have been left stranded, placing me in a potentially dangerous situation. The issue was confirmed by the dealership. Although there is an active NHTSA recall related to this exact problem, my vehicle’s VIN was not included. However, it should have been—my vehicle was manufactured during the affected production period and experienced the same failure described in the recall. As a result, I had to pay out of pocket for these substantial repairs. The manufacturer failed to include my VIN in the recall, despite clear evidence that my vehicle was subject to the same defect. The manufacturer inspected the vehicle and confirmed that the failure involved both the starter and the battery; however, I was required to pay out of pocket for the replacement of both components. There were no warning lights, error messages, or other symptoms prior to the failure—the vehicle simply stopped functioning without notice. Further research revealed that many other owners have reported the same starter malfunction, frequently resulting in battery failure and the need to replace both components. Although the manufacturer is aware of this widespread issue, they have not issued a comprehensive recall for all affected vehicles. Had they done so, this failure—and the associated safety risks, inconvenience, and significant repair costs—could have been avoided.

Despite repeated attempts, the engine would not start. The vehicle showed no prior warnings or dashboard alerts before the failure. The part has not yet been replaced, and the car is unable to start still. Incident Description On a recent trip, while lined up at a ferry terminal waiting to board, our BMW X5 unexpectedly failed to start. There was no warning light or error code displayed. The car was completely unresponsive, despite repeated starting attempts. We were in the middle of the boarding line, blocking all vehicles behind us. We had to request assistance from ferry staff, who helped tow the car to a parkade. This incident led to the cancellation of our trip, caused significant stress and public disruption, and exposed us to serious safety and liability risks. We immediately contacted BMW roadside assistance, who were unable to diagnose the issue remotely and only suggested continued restart attempts, which were ineffective. We recently learned of NHTSA Recall 24V-576, issued on August 1, 2024, by BMW of North America. The recall involves the engine starter in 2019–2020 BMW X5 models, due to engine no-start issues and potential electrical overloads that can result in a thermal event. While our vehicle matches the make, model, and year, we were informed by BMW that our specific VIN is not currently listed under the recall. However, we are experiencing exactly the same problem described in the recall notice—an engine that suddenly fails to start, with no warning, and with the potential for unsafe repeated ignition attempts. I strongly believe that our vehicle should be included in BMW’s official recall list for 24V-576. The symptoms, risk profile, and component behavior align perfect with the recall description.

vehicle has been vibrating at low speeds when turning or when backing up. Took vehicle to BMW dealership (BMW of Nashville in Franklin, TN) multiple times during the past 18 months without resolution. On my visit for the same issue this month, dealership finally recognized the issue and said there was a BMW bulletin out about the issue SIB 27 02 20. It is very frustrating that 1. The dealership kept stalling and despite test driving the car with me and feeling the vibration, they kept blaming tires or saying it was normal while the bulletin about the issues was generated in 05.20.2020 2. It cost me over $627 for them to change the transfer case oil to diagnose and repair the issue. I am still in the testing phase after the transfer case oil change as the vehicle needs to be driven 300+ miles. The dealership and BMW should issue a recall since it is a know issue that the wrong oil was used in the manufacturing process and reimburse the cost charged for diagnostic and transfer case oil replacement. The vehicle is furthermore still under warranty so I should not be paying anything for diagnostics or repairs.

I have a 2019 BMW X5 that experienced engine failure and required a new battery and starter to be installed. I feel certain that it is related to a recall on some 2019/2020 models but my vin is not included. [XXX] I received a fault warning for drivetrain malfunction. I took the car to the bmw dealership and was told it was an upper radiator blind failure and had it replaced. The dealership performed a software update per recall SIB 120524. The mileage was 36,981. While visiting family in New Orleans[XXX] @ [XXX] in the afternoon, on Decatur (heart of French Quarter) the car died in the middle of rush hour traffic. Fault came up that said ”engine overheat will attempt restart in 180 sec.” Car would not start and had to be towed to local BMW. Highly stressful as I was with my daughter. We had people honking horns, screaming at us, police threatening to ticket us, etc. ordeal lasted 2 hrs until tow arrived. After 4 days in the BMW shop I was advised a new battery was needed. No indication the starter was checked at this time. Mileage was 40,168. The next day [XXX] when driving home to Dallas I pull over to get gas in Natchitoches, La. I fill up and try to start car and failure notice shows up ”engine overheat will attempt restart in 180 sec”. Same thing as before new battery installed. The car did not restart even after an hr of waiting. Would not take a jump so we had to be towed to Shreveport(1 1/2 hrs away) to closest BMW dealership. I was traveling with My son and was beyond grateful at the kindness of the tow driver as he took us to get food and a hotel that was safe after delivering the car to the dealership. The next afternoon the Shreveport dealership determined that the starter failed and it had to be replaced. Mileage was 40,423. I feel I am due repayment for the tows and repairs on what I feel are recall related. I have contacted all 3 dealerships and North America BMW to get the run around. I bought this car brand new and a couple of weeks after purchasing it, I would notice a creaking noise and/or a slight bump when I would put on the brakes. I have a lot of paperwork where I contacted the dealer to tell them about this noise over the years. They continued to tell me they didn’t hear or feel anything when I would take it in to be checked. I even had one of their mechanics to get in the car with me, so I could point it out. He told me that was normal. Over the years they said things like the brakes are cold and just have to warm up or that the sound was the auto hold and was designed that way, along with other opinions. It’s continued to get louder over the years and it bumps when you reverse the car or if you cut the wheel far. Now, they’re saying it’s the chassis and a thrust arm needs to be repaired. This was a defect from the beginning and I have the paperwork to show that I contacted them repeatedly about it.

I have a 2019 BMW x5. My starter failed and I got a notification at the same time through my BMW app that there was a safety recall "RE: Recall 24V-576: Engine Starter – B12 05 24". The recall instructs the dealer that the Correction is "DME software update that will prevent the engine starter from being overloaded". This is all fine. It then gives the instruction "Note: Some vehicles may also be affected by the following technical campaign: 0012240600 Check and, if necessary, replace starter motor Please ensure that, if possible, both technical actions are processed at the same time." My issue is that the initial Recall is the clear issue causing the starter failure and they have acknowledged this in the technical campaign following. However, my vehicle's VIN is not included in the technical campaign that instructs them to replace the starter even though it was their negligence which caused the failure which they have acknowledged. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? No I paid to have the starter replaced. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Our 2019 BMW X5 triggered a warning light requiring us to pull over immediately and tow the vehicle to the nearest dealer. It currently has 35,000 miles and the dealer informed us that the oil pump failed. After research and discussion with the dealer this has occurred with multiple 2019 X5's at that particular dealer as well as others. BMW has not issued a recall or extended warranty for the oil pump that is included in the B58 Engine. That particular oil pump has casing that is made of plastic that is known to fail. In the 2020 model they then replaced that casing with metal. It is clear BMW knows of this issue and is not taking action to ensure the consumer's safety and investment is addressed.

I am writing to file a complaint against BMW for the replacement of the starter in my 2019 BMW X5 (VIN # [XXX] ) which I had to pay for out of pocket in March 2024. My vehicle failed to start after repeated attempts. After a call to the dealership they told me I would have to have it towed to the dealership at my own expense at a total of $266 for them to assess. The dealership confirmed that the starter needed replacement which cost me an additional $1736.78 out of pocket. After receiving a recall notice from BMW, I learned that this issue is related to a known safety defect with the starter which can lead to electrical overload, overheating, and in rare cases a fire risk. Given that I had to replace the faulty starter before the recall was issued, I am requesting reimbursement for the costs I incurred -$2002.78 which includes the towing charges and starter replacement. I reached out to Joseph Battle (Service Advisor) at BMW of Nashville, and he informed me that reimbursement is not possible only a software upgrade. “shark fin” GPS antenna because unglued allowing water into the electrical system in the roof. This caused a malfunction that disabled the emergency call functions, GPS location service for emergency calls and GPS functions. The issue is the TCB component due to faulty waterproofing. It also makes hands free calling impossible which makes following hands free laws more difficult. Upon investigation and BMW’s admission, it is a very common problem for 2019 X5s unrelated to any driving conditions etc.

The vehicle was towed back to the dealer to get a diagnosis; the contact received a diagnosis stating that the starter motor needed to be replaced. BMW jerking and shuttering sensation and rough grinding noise when driving at low speed 2-5 mph and while turning at 2-5 mph. Safety was put at risk with while turning with oncoming traffic and when vehicles directly behind me. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by the BMW dealership service department. The service department change the left tire and replaced the transfer oil on 5/10/23. This did not solve the problem. The vehicle was returned to dealership for same reason on 7/19/24 and the dealership replaced the right tire. The problem still exists. The vehicle has been not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representative. No warning lamps or messages appear to diagnose the problem.

Reference recall No. 24V-576, I believe the issue reported in the recall is related to the 'Auto Start' feature of the vehicle. As a result of this failure, the safety issue can be much serious than what is stated in recall. In addition to the electrical overload of the starter, leading to risk of fire, the vehicle will not start, unable to shift out of Park therefore, potential of stranding the vehicle and the passengers in the middle of the road. The following occurred on [XXX]. at 2:30pm, we( my wife, 2 daughters and I) were traveling [XXX] in Tracy, in the fast lane in our 2019 X5. Auto Start feature was active, when I pressed on the gas pedal, engine suddenly turned off. The car would not start. There was no warning or any error message. We were stuck in the middle of the fast lane in heavy traffic and cars were passing on the both sides, making it impossible to be even get out and walk to safety. I tried to restart the car multiple times with success. We felt in danger of being struck by another vehicle. Luckily, the CHP was a few minutes behind us and stopped to help us. We tried to put the vehicle in Neutral so it can be pushed out to the side and not block traffic. I called the East Bay BMW and the Road Assistance for help with putting the vehicle in Neutral but I was told it can’t be done. The CHP (2 officers) and I tried to put the car in neutral but without any success. I with EastBay BMW and was told that noting can be done to put the vehicle in Neutral. The only way to shift the car in Neutral is from under the car and requires a mechanic . There was electrical burning smell coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to the EastBay Dealership in Pleasanton, CA. Upon inspection, the Dealer stated the issue is due to bad battery and it caused the starter to overload as I attempted to start the car. On November 9, 2023, I was driving out of town to visit a friend. I had been on the road for 1.5 hours and driven approximately 100 miles. When the vehicle approached a stop sign and came to a stop, the auto stop function turned the engine off. When it was my turn to proceed, I disengaged the brake, but the vehicle's auto start function failed to turn on the engine. I put the car in park and pushed the start button once. In doing so, the car attempted to restart itself multiple times, without success. I could hear the vehicle "cranking", but the car never started. Shortly thereafter, the cranking sound stopped, and white smoke filled the cabin through the air vents. It smelled like burning plastic. I grabbed my belongings and evacuated the area. Once outside of the vehicle, I could see white smoke bellowing out from underneath the vehicle. There were no warning messages or any other issues prior to the failure. The car was towed over 100 miles to the dealership where they confirmed an internal short circuit caused the starter to fail. The dealership replaced the starter. I do see there is a recall for the starter. However, I believe my issue is different. The vehicle failed to restart due to the recently identified programming issue, causing the starter to malfunction. The starter failure was not due to excessive attempts to start the vehicle, as I only pushed the start button one time.

The emergency call system malfunction displayed. Upon taking vehicle to a BMW dealer for inspection, I was informed that the antenna needed to be replaced for $2000.00 to fix the problem. I did research and found that other owners of the same make and model as well as prior and later models have had the same issue. The shark fin antenna allows water ingress into the components which causes internal damage, this could possibly lead to other electrical problems that could present while the vehicle is in motion. What if an owner gets into an accident and the SOS/emergency call is unable to deploy due to this faulty antenna leakage.

My backup camera is so dim at night I cannot see many obstacles. The dealer adjusted the camera to maximum brightness, but it's still so dim that I cannot see pedestrians wearing dark clothing and other obstacles behind me. Only the acoustic warning has prevented me from hitting an object or running into a person. I have talked to many other owners of this year BMW X5, and all of them have a similar complaint. The dealer adjusted the camera to its maximum night-time brightness but to no avail. The dealer then told me BMW designed the camera to be hard to see at night. I have normal night vision, as confirmed at my yearly vision exam by a licensed ophthalmologist, so I find it dubious that BMW would make their backup camera too dark to use at night. I found that shinning a bright light at the lower-left area of the instrument binacle causes the backup camera image to become much brighter and solves the visibility problem. Therefore, I think there is a BMW SW problem that dims the rearview camera too much when it believes it is night time.

Driver Restraint Malfunction warning light turned on while driving and stated dangerous driving conditions and to see a Dealer immediately. The Dealer diagnosis was a faulty airbag wire harness due to rubbing against the metal which caused the airbag light to malfunction. Car had 47500 miles but BMW did not cover this faulty wiring under warranty. Should be a recall on faulty wiring.

On the date below, a warning banner and chime signaled that our car's emergency communication system was not functional. Soon after, we noticed that the navigation system was "lost"; ie, showing our car in a different state, sometimes in water, incorrect displays of speed limits being shown, etc. Vehicle was evaluated at a BMW dealership, and the primary defective part was found to be the "sharkfin" on the roof. Water entered the roof structure (not the interior of the car) via this sharkfin, and resulted in damage to the TCB, which reportedly controls many of the car's more-advanced electrical functions. Due to unfortunate clauses in warrantees on the car--both BMW certified pre-owned coverage, and also a 3rd party service contract that was purchased at the time of purchase, from the BMW dealer, as a bumper-to-bumper "platinum" supplement to the certified pre-owned warranty, are currently in effect for this car--this defect is NOT covered. Cost to repair all involvedf parts is approximately $5,000. As a consequence of this expense, it has not been repaired, and likely will not be in the near future. A Google search about this issue yielded numerous identical incidents involving this same model/year of BMW. Several owners wondered if a recall was needed, since it is clearly a manufacturer defect with clear-cut and repeated ramifications, is very costly to repair (so is likely to NOT be repaired, in many instances), and is subject to a loophole in warranty coverage. My impression from this internet search is that other systems in the car might soon stop working. I believe it is a safety issue, now, given the failure of the emergency communication function controlled by the TCB, and might become more of an issue in the future, when/if additional functions fail.

This vehicle has only 36,000 miles, and there is a known issue with the knee airbags. See attached notice. My driver's side knee airbag warning light recently went on, but BMW refuses to remedy the problem. They should be required to recall and cover the cost of the repair.

Vehicle is out of warranty. Car only has 36K miles and passengers restraint system malfunction appeared. It basically says that the passenger airbag won't deploy due to this malfunction. Union diagnosis ilthe culprit is a defective seat occupancy mat sensor module and the seat mat. Both parts should be recalled as this failure occured without outside influence. This is a extremely important component that can fail at any moment in the 2019 X5 Xdrive50i.

A portion on the Airbag system was/is disabled due to an issue, known to BMW, with the wiring harness connected to the passenger seat. It is available for inspection if requested. Normal movement of the electric seat in turn pulls a wiring harness that failed by being "chaffed". This flaw results in a "Restraint System Error", passenger side - a significant problem since this harness controls an integral safety system of the vehicle and ultimately disables part of the airbag system until repaired. During inspection at the dealer's service center, the car was connected to a fault reader that reported a wiring harness/module failure due to "chaffing". This chaffing caused a short that triggered the warning light and deactivated a key air bag safety feature. I was told that normal movement of the passenger seat moves the wires and causes the system failure. After consulting with my Service Advisor, the repair was explained as "installation of a new, modified (longer) wiring harness that allows for rerouting of the wires so that the condition is corrected" What alarmed me as a consumer was when I asked if they were sure this would fix the problem, the dealer told me they see it quite often and 99% of the time it is a problem with the original design and routing of the harness. From my perspective, this indicates BMW acknowledges this is a known problem impacting the safe operation of the vehicle. The repair requires removal of the entire center console and replacing and rerouting a newly designed wiring harness. The estimate for repair to the consumer is almost $1300 - making it likely that many consumers would delay this important repair. In my opinion, this engineering flaw should be the subject of a voluntary recall at the least.

Recently, the display behind the steering wheel has turned off twice while driving on the highway. This display contains the speedometer, meaning there was no way to gauge vehicle speed while driving. The problem is random; no warnings were shown, but keeping the car off for a couple of hours before turning it back on has brought the display back temporarily.

BMW "did not" issue a recall notice for this known issue for my VIN. They were aware of this issue and corrected it based on the latest software update 11/2022.56. The problem is older software versions can cause the battery to completely drain even when the engine is not running and make you deserted anywhere, which is a safety issue. Also, since the battery can be fully drained, your booster brakes also will not work during the start of the engine, which can again cause risk when starting. BMW did not advise customers regarding this safety issue. In my case, My battery was completely drained, and I had to replace my battery. Details of the defect from the latest software update release notes are mentioned below. The concern is why BMW did not issue a recall notice to customers like me. I hope NHTSA can take the necessary action on this and issue a proper recall notice. "Recall of automatic transmission/ EGSsoftware:(USA/CANADA) The current software version of your vehicle may mean that the electronic transmission control continues to consume energy after parking the vehicle and may result in the total discharge of the 12 V vehicle battery. A Vehicle start can no longer be ensured in this case. This malfunction is rectified by the upgrade 11/2022.56. The corresponding special defect code is 0024720100" (Photo attached)

Dealer service finally diagnosed AC refrigerant leak through evaporator on a vehicle less than 40,000 miles and just over 4 years. The symptom (hissing sound from vent) has started before 30,000 miles or 3 years, but dealer service indicated it is just a fan noise. Unsafe to drive in 90 degF+ weather without an AC.

Dear Sir This is regarding my 2019 BMW X5 VIN [XXX] , purchased on 5/28/2019 from BMW Orland Park IL. I encountered ‘Reduced engine power’ message on 5/8/2023. This vehicle was driven about 40000 miles at that time. BMW Orland park diagnosed the root cause and fixed it on 5/10/2023. They replaced faulty lower radiator blind. I am surprised and worried that top luxury brand SUV had this problem so early and right around warranty expired. I asked service advisor of any recall, but unfortunately he didn’t find anything. I spent $802.37 + tax, for this repair very early in the BMW vehicle’s life. I would appreciate if you can research/investigate this problem with 2019 BMW X5, whether it’s eligible for recall or free repair. The contact owns a 2019 BMW X5. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the horn and turn signals were inoperable. Additionally, the windshield wipers remained on constantly and failed to deactivate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. The VIN was unavailable.

Vehicle airbag/seatbelt warning light on 9/2022. Airbag (seatbelt) module replaced. Caused by condensation or leak due to BMW not sealing cupholders and placing KEY SAFETY EQUIPMENT directly under unsealed cupholders. I was told other modules likely damaged but airbags and seatbelt were first to go out. 2023 April/May - steering issues. Windshield wipers run continuously and cannot be turned off. Horn and turn signal also stopped working. Need steering column replaced. BMW said possibly also related to cupholder defect. I am concerned the unsealed cupholders are going to kill someone if airbags deploy unnecessarily or seatbelt/airbags fail. BMW should have not placed KEY safety equipment under unsealed drink holders.

I was turning left on a residential street when the steering wheel locked, the brakes would not work to stop the car from going straight and the engine would not turn off when I attempted to stop the engine once realizing that everything was failing. The electrical panel went black and I collided with a residential home. Airbags deployed, EMS, fire and Police were called to the scene and the Tow truck driver noted that all systems had failed and the car basically shut off all functionality. They had to manually push the vehicle onto the flatbed tow truck. I am concerned as this issue was a safety concern while I was driving the car and it seemed all systems failed.

I received notification that my passenger restraint system has a malfunction. The car threw up a code, I received a phone call and text message from the dealer. I thought this was important so I took the car to the dealer. They said the detection mat needs replace and the cost would be $1811.00. The dealer asked me if something spilled on it? The answer was no. I believe this is a safety defect an a recall should be initiated!

Since February of this year, my X5 has suddenly gone into neutral gear while driving in stop and go traffic on multiple occasions over the past 3 months. This incident first started on 2/26/2022, wherein my car abruptly went into neutral, coming to a complete stop in the midst of heavy stop and go traffic, while approaching George Washington Bridge. This happened twice within a 20 minute interval during that same trip. The car wouldn’t start back again for several minutes each time. Following this, I took my X5 to my local dealership to get it checked out. The dealership kept the car for a few days, ran some tests, but were unable to replicate the issue. The car was subsequently released to me. (Ref: dealership service invoice dated 3/8/2022) The exact issue recurred on 5/22/2022, again in heavy stop and go traffic, approaching George Washington Bridge. This time the car wouldn’t start for more than 10-15 minutes. Following this, I had to call 911 to help me out. The car eventually started after 20 minutes. I took it back to the same dealership. Once again, the issue couldn’t be replicated. However, after consulting with the factory technicians, the dealership replaced the gear shifter. (Ref: dealership service invoice dated 6/8/2022) Unfortunately, this exact issue recurred on 6/24/2022 – heavy stop and go traffic, on the approach to Whitestone Bridge. The car abruptly went into neutral from drive mode, stopped completely and wouldn’t start back again for a few minutes. Please note that the Automatic Start/Stop (MSA) system on the vehicle was always set to OFF. It is a miracle I did not get into an accident when this issue manifested each time. I have made yet another appointment with my local dealer for 7/11/2022 to re-evaluate the issue. In the meanwhile, I called the main office at BMW USA and got a case started as well.

The car has a faulty cup holder that allows fluid to leak. Below the cup holder is Crash Module, which controls the airbags and all the safety restraint system. I had a minor amount of fluid leak. This caused corrosion on the ASCM module. BMW is fighting me in paying for this. Based on my research there have been hundreds of incidents and a class action lawsuit. This is clearly a defect in design. About a year ago, coffee began leaking from below from a paper cup in the plastic cupholder of my x5. I immediately noticed it and cleaned it up. Approximately 1-2 ounces of liquid leaked into the plastic cupholder. On May 11, 2022, the Passenger Restraint System faulted and the light came on. The vehicle was inspected by BMW of Austin and stated that liquid seeped onto the Airbag Control Module and some of the pins were corroded. This would not be covered by the Warranty as it was deemed an "external" factor that caused the failure. The estimate to fix this issue and get the airbag functioning again is $2,005.00. BMW placed the Airbag Control Module right under the plastic cupholder, and does not seal the plastic cupholder or the important Airbag Control Module right under the plastic cupholder. Luckily, the airbag system did not automatically stop the vehicle as has been the case with other vehicles- X7 and X5. This is a design failure that BMW is aware of that leaves its customers at risk of injury due to the airbag system faulting. This issue is ongoing and affects all X5 and X7 models. BMW needs to provide a remedy to this design and safety flaw. Owners should not have to pay $2,000 to remedy. There is a class action lawsuit filed in December 2021 for this exact issue.

I recently acquired a 2019 BMW X5. When I requested seat belt extenders as your web site suggests, "If you need a roomier belt, contact your vehicle manufacturer to obtain seat belt extenders." my dealer told me that they "cannot get them." I contacted BMW corporate customer services and while the gentleman I have been dealing with is trying and is very courteous, he can't seem to find any information. I regularly transport two people who cannot use the seatbelt and I am concerned for their safety.

Traveling west on I-70 at the Eagle Colorado exit the brakes failed as we pulled off the highway the brakes failed. Went up the ramp at 50-60 MPH. Missed the cars waiting to enter the round-a-bout and went over a decorative divider about 3 feet high. Went in the air and was then traveling on the wrong side of street. Saw a fireplug and hit it at 20-30 MPH and that stopped us. No airbags deployed at either hit. Four in the car and no serious medical issues, just soreness. Had police and fire test the brakes to show they didn't work. Obviously the air bags Hadn't deployed. Filed police report with Eagle City, 2021-000417 and AIG insurance report 80255229. Car was declared totaled.

Driving my vehicle and on my screen popped up driver seat restraint malfunction, also rear seat restraint malfunction please go to closest dealership. I bring my vehicle to BMW dealership in my town and rep calls me and advise that the cup holders sit above the srs wiring and that liquid gets thru the cup holders and dripped on to the wires causing them to no longer work. This is a design flaw i have never spilled a drink in my cup holder and even if someone did on accident why is the AIRBAG wires not covered in plastic if going below cup holders that leak any type of liquid. I am unable to afford, I do have warranty however BMW stating that this is an outside interferance and will not be covered under warranty, so I am having to drive with no airbags. I researched and many others are having same issue with this same year and make different models. This is something that definatly needs to be recalled as it is a design flaw and a safety hazard.

Over the 2 years of ownership I had about 5 incident where I lost control of my 2019 BMW X5 40i. The specific trim was XLine with standard brake option. It occurred rather randomly so I was not able to identify the pattern to reproduce. Right after the ignition to leave a parking space (and while still holding the brake since starting the car) the car would push my foot up and I would lose control of the brake. After a few seconds of desperate tries to press the brake, I was able to stop the car from drifting backwards as I engaged "Park" gear. Similar situation occurred and each time I was fortunate that there wasn't a car directly heading towards me. However I experienced this life threatening experience and BMW seems to acknowledge with their service bulletin of "SIB 34 04 19" but no fix was given to me.

WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE CAR ALONE AROUND 7:30PM 5/13/2021 ON THE WAY TO A RESTAURANT, AFTER I PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL TO PASS ANOTHER CAR (ACCELERATED TO ABOUT 50MILE-55MILE/HR), THE CAR ALL OF A SUDDEN ACCELERATED ON ITSELF. I NOTICED RIGHT AWAY AFTER MY RIGHT FOOT MOVED AWAY FROM THE GAS PEDAL (FROM 50 TO 55 THEN UP TO 65MILE/HR, I STOPPED MY OBSERVATION SINCE IT WAS GETTING TOO FAST). I HAVE TO CONSTANTLY HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL TO REDUCE THE SPEED FOR ABOUT A MILE OR TWO. AFTER I REACHED THE NEXT TRAFFIC LIGHT, I HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL VERY HARD TO MAKE THE CAR FULLY STOP, SO I DECIDED TO SWITCH THE TRANSMISSION FROM D TO P TO SEE IF IT COULD GET OUT OF ACCELERATION PROBLEM. ONCE I SWITCHED TO PARK, I TRIED TO SWITCH IT BACK TO DRIVE MODE, HOWEVER THE CAR DID NOT RESPOND AND STAYED IN PARKING MODE. I THEN TRIED TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND TURNED IT BACK TWO TO THREE TIMES, IT JUST DIDN'T ALLOW ME TO CHANGE BACK TO DRIVE MODE. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE CAR MADE A LOT OF NOISE SINCE IT ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. I REALIZED IT WAS TOO DANGEROUS TO SIT IN THE CAR IN FRONT OF THE TRAFFIC LIGHT EVEN WITH THE EMERGENCY LIGHT ON. SO I DECIDED TO TURN IT OFF AND LEFT THE CAR. I SMELLED A VERY STRONG BURNING SMELL EVEN THOUGH I QUICKLY MOVED AWAY FROM THE CAR. I WAITED ON THE STREET SIDE FOR ABOUT 2-3 MINUTES AND WENT BACK TO THE CAR, I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO SWITCH TO D MODE AND DROVE AWAY SLOWLY. I HAD SIMILAR PROBLEM HAPPENED LAST YEAR AROUND OCTOBER FOR 3-4 TIMES (NOT AS BAD AS IT WAS TODAY, I CAN TURN ENGINE OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON, IT WILL RETURN TO NORMAL) AND I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO BMW DEALERSHIP (BMW AT GWINNETT PLACE IN DULUTH GA, WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN NOV 2019) AND THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO CREATE THE PROBLEM. THE FIRST 2 VISITS RESULTED IN A VEHICLE INSPECTION AND CLEANING OF ENGINE AREA WITH NO LEAK FOUND, STATING IS WAS MOST LIKELY LEFT OVER OIL FROM MESSY OIL CHANGE. THE 3RD VISIT RESULTED IN REPLACING THE REAR MAIN SEAL AND PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED PER DEALER. VEHICLE CONTINUED TO LEAK AFTER WE BROUGHT IT HOME. 4TH VISIT RESULTED IN REPLACING OIL PAN GASKET BUT LEAKS ARE NOW POPPING UP IN OTHER AREAS. BMW ENGINEER HAS BEEN REQUESTED BY DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW WITH LEASE JUNE 2019, AND CONTINUOUSLY REPORTED & EXPERIENCED FAILURES/ISSUES BY OWNER, NUMEROUS PASSENGERS, INCLUDING MULTIPLE BMW SERVICE MANAGERS: ENGINE BUTTONS NOT TURNING OFF THE ENGINE INTERMITTENTLY, OR NOT TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE ELECTRICAL POWER. AFTER HIGH ACCELERATION ON A INTERSTATE HIGHWAY COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP THE ENGINE WOULD TERMINATE AND THEREBY HAVING TO QUICKLY PLACE THE VEHICLE INTO PARK TO RESTART THE ENGINE, THIS HAD TO BE DONE RAPIDLY DUE TO HIGH SPEED TRAFFIC. VEHICLE WOULD REPEAT ISSUE ON RURAL ROADWAY STOPS, BUT NOT AS OFTEN ON INTERSTATE ABOVE 60MPH. GPS HAD SOFTWARE MALFUNCTIONS AFTER BEING REPAIRED 2X FOR ELECTRICAL STABILITY ISSUES THIS CONTINUED TO MALFUNCTION THEN CORRECTED AT AN ALTERNATIVE BMW DEALERSHIP. SIDE ASSIST ALERTS AND NOTIFICATIONS WERE CONTINUING TO FAIL AFTER 4-5 ATTEMPTS TO REMEDY. KEY FAB WOULD FAIL TO COMMUNICATE AND FAIL TO LOCK VEHICLE AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO FIX BY BMW. VEHICLE SOFTWARE PROGRAMMING WOULD NOT MAINTAIN CONSISTENCY WITH VARIOUS COMPONENT RESPONSE FOR BACK DOORS, TRUNK/TAILGATE FAILURE TO RESPOND MOST IMPORTANTLY VEHICLE POWER OVERALL. FINALLY, THE VEHICLE HAS SUSPENSION ISSUES, STILL A CONCERN THIS COULD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THE NUMEROUS TIMES UNDER BMW REPAIR SHOPS BEING LIFTED BY PRESSURIZED COMPONENTS; OR WHEN IT WAS INITIALLY DELIVERED OFF THE TRUCK FROM MANUFACTURER TO DEALERSHIP? I PARKED MY CAR IN MY GARAGE, TURNED IT OFF (THE ELECTRONICS POWERED DOWN INSIDE THE CAR), AND WENT INSIDE. APPROXIMATELY 4.5 HOURS LATER, MY CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS WENT OFF. I SEARCHED THE HOME FOR THE SOURCE AND WHEN I OPENED MY GARAGE DOOR I DISCOVERED MY VEHICLE ENGINE HAD BEEN RUNNING FOR ABOUT 4.5 HOURS IN THE CLOSED THE GARAGE. I ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE ENGINE OFF, BUT IT DID NOT WORK. I HAD TO POWER THE CAR ON BEFORE IT WOULD THEN ALLOW ME TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF, INCLUDING THE ENGINE. IT WAS VERY SCARY. I HAVE ALSO MADE A REPORT TO THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM.

I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 25 TO 35 MPH WHEN THE EMERGENCY ACTION SYSTEM GOT ACTIVATED THAT I WAS POSSIBLY GOING TO GET SOMETHING IN FRONT OF ME THERE WERE NO CARS IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE I ALMOST GOT REAR-ENDED AND ALMOST BROKE MY FINGER ON THE STEERING WHEEL AS IT TURNED AROUND. THE VEHICLE STOPPED FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. IT STOPPED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO CRASH INTO SOMETHING. THIS COULD'VE KILLED ME AS THIS WAS VERY DANGEROUS. I HAVE DROP THIS OFF AT THE BMW DEALER AND THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED.

INTERMITTENTLY AND WITHOUT EXPLANATION THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE STARTED USING NORMAL PROCEDURE EVEN THOUGH THE KEY FOB IS ON THE DRIVER'S PERSON. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW IN APRIL 2019, THE DEALERSHIP HAS HAD FIVE OPPORTUNITIES TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM WITHOUT SUCCESS. I HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED THAT SHOULD THE VEHICLE FAIL TO START NORMALLY, RETRIEVE THE FOB; LOCK AND UNLOCK THE VEHICLE USING THE KEY FOB AND THEN START THE VEHICLE USING THE FOB WHICH (DEALERSHIP LANGUAGE HERE) HAS BEEN "AWAKENED." AS A SEMI DISABLED 73 YEAR OLD MALE THIS NECESSITATES THAT I EXIT THE VEHICLE AND, IN STANDING POSITION, CREATE THE ABILITY TO REMOVE THE KEY FOB FROM MY FRONT PANT POCKET IN ORDER TO FOLLOW THE PROCEDURE TO "AWAKEN" THE KEY FOB FOR PURPOSES OF STARTING THE VEHICLE. I CAN THINK OF ANY NUMBER OF SITUATIONS IN WHICH THIS COULD CREATE A HAZARDOUS SITUATION AND AM THEREFORE SUBMITTING THE PROBLEM TO NTSB FOR REVIEW.

ISSUE: MY RIGHT HAND RESTS OFTEN RESTS ON THE SHIFT LEVER WHILE DRIVING. SIX TO SEVEN TIMES MY BRAKING HAS INADVERTENTLY CAUSED THE SHIFT LEVER TO MOVE FORWARD TO NEUTRAL WITHOUT MY REALIZING IT. THEN, WHEN I ATTEMPT TO ACCELERATE I AM NOT MOVING WHEN TRAFFIC APPROACHING FROM THE REAR ANTICIPATES MY MOVEMENT. TWICE THERE HAS BEEN VERY CLOSE CALLS TO ME GETTING STRUCK FROM THE REAR. THE VEHICLE HAS HAD ERRONEOUS, EXTREME, AND UNEXPECTED BEHAVIORS RELATED TO THE ACTIVE DRIVING ASSISTANT FEATURES. WHERE THE SYSTEM ACTIVATES TOO EARLY, TOO LATE, OR UNEXPECTEDLY. AFTER VEHICLE WAS DELIVERED IN NOVEMBER 2018 THE CAR TOOK AN UNCOMMANDED LEFT TURN NEARLY HITTING THE MOVEABLE CONCRETE BARRIER TRAVELING WESTBOUND ON THE WALT WHITMAN BRIDGE DURING HEAVY RAIN. CAR WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP. WAS ADVISED TO TURN OFF ACTIVE STEERING INTERVENTION AS A SUB-FEATURE OF LANE DEPARTURE WARNING. SYSTEM REMAINED OFF. ON JUNE 10TH THE ACTIVE STEERING INTERVENTION WAS REACTIVATED AND PULLED THE VEHICLE INTO ANOTHER LANE OF TRAFFIC THAT WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A CRASH IF THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE HAD NOT PULLED OFF INTO THE SIDE MEDIAN. THE ACTIVE STEERING INTERVENTION WAS CHECKED 'OFF' AND SHOULD NOT HAVE ACTIVATED AND THERE WERE NO VISUAL CUES THAT THE SYSTEM WAS ON, ACTIVE, AND COULD TAKE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. CAR WAS RETURNED TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. SHOP FOREMAN DROVE AND CONFIRMED THE SAME ACTION. TOOK VEHICLE BACK, AND STILL CAN ACTIVATE STEERING INTERVENTION WHEN IT IS IN THE 'OFF' POSITION. SERVICE MANAGER SAID THAT BMW ENGINEERING HAS CONFIRMED THAT THIS IS HOW THE SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED. AUTOMATION THAT WAS NOT PROPERLY DISCLOSED KILLED 300+ PEOPLE IN 2 SEPARATE AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS. THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT NOTIFY, DISCLOSE OR IN ANY WAY WARN THE DRIVER THAT AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM MAY TAKE CONTROL AND IF THIS IS THE DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE IT IS NOT SAFE AND COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

1) SEVERAL INSTANCES OF DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IN DRY CONDITIONS, THE STEERING DRIFTS SLIGHTLY TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT REQUIRING CONSTANT STEERING CORRECTIONS. I HAVE THE STEERING WHEEL CENTERED IN THE LANE BUT THE CAR WILL SLIGHTLY DRIFT IN ONE DIRECTION, ONCE CORRECTED IT WILL DRIFT IN THE OTHER DIRECTION. IT DOESN'T HAPPEN ALL THE TIME BUT IS NOTICEABLE WHEN IT DOES. WIND AND ROAD CROWN WERE NOT A FACTOR. IT REMINDS ME OF CARS BUILT IN THE 1970'S THAT HAD A BIT OF "PLAY" IN THE STEERING. 2) X5 WAS PARKED OUTSIDE ON A ROAD TRIP THROUGH DES MOINES IN EARLY FEBRUARY. OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURES WERE IN THE MID-TEENS. DEPARTING THE NEXT MORNING AND IMMEDIATELY DRIVING (DRY ROAD CONDITIONS) ON THE HIGHWAY THE STEERING WHEEL HAD SLIGHT JERKING MOVEMENTS TAKING THE CAR LEFT OR RIGHT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. YOU COULD DEFINITELY FEEL THE MOVEMENT IN THE STEERING AND IT REQUIRED CONSTANT ADJUSTMENT. THIS WENT AWAY AFTER ABOUT 15 MINUTES. IT APPEARS THE STEERING IS RECEIVING UNCOMMANDED INPUTS FROM SENSORS OR SOFTWARE WHICH IS UNSETTLING WHEN IT OCCURS.

WHEN THE VEHICLE IS OPERATED IN COLD TEMPERATURES (<10 DEGREES F), THE STEERING WILL RANDOMLY "TWITCH". DURING VERY COLD CONDITIONS (BELOW 10 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT), THE VEHICLE'S STEERING FEELS LOOSE, NUMB AND DISCONNECTED. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS/LANE KEEP ASSIST. I TURNED ALL THOSE SYSTEMS OFF AND THE ISSUE PERSISTED. WHEN CONDITIONS BECAME WARMER, THE ISSUE WENT AWAY. IT HAS ONLY OCCURRED IN EXTREME COLD. MY BMW DEALER ADVISED THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND THAT THE SERVICE MANAGER'S VEHICLE IS DOING A SAME THING. THEY INDICATED THAT BMW ADVISES A SOFTWARE UPDATE IS FORTHCOMING, BUT WHEN? WE HAVE HAD A NUMBER OF ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE SINCE DELIVERY IN NOVEMBER. ALL SOFTWARE RELATED, AND NONE HAVE BEEN CORRECTED BY UPDATES YET. THE REST OF THEM ARE ANNOYANCES, UNACCEPTABLE YES, BUT THIS STEERING ISSUE IS A SAFETY ISSUE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2019 BMW X5. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, "LEVELER SELECT DEFECT" APPEARED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FOLLOWED BY "TRANSMISSION DEFECT, DO NOT TURN VEHICLE OFF". THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO SHIFT INTO DRIVE, NEUTRAL, AND REVERSE, BUT COULD NOT SHIFT INTO PARK. IN ADDITION, THE SERVICE TRANSMISSION WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO BE PLACED INTO PARK, IT AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF AND WOULD NOT RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DAVIS AUTOMOTIVE GROUP (6135 KRUSE DRIVE, SOLON, OHIO 44139, (440) 542-0600) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENTIRE GEAR SHIFT AND TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE CORPORATE OFFICE. THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A RESPONSE FROM BMW. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 860.
