THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BYRELY NISSAN (4027 DIXIE HIGHWAY, LOUISVILLE, KY 40216) WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE VIN WAS OLD AND NO LONGER IN THE SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000. THE CONSUMER DID NOT RECIEVE THE RECALL #11V244000 NOTICE. IN ADDITION, THERE HAD BEEN RUST PROGRESSING OVER TIME ON THE UNDERBODY/FRAMING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING COULD CRACK AND CAUSE A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE CONCERNING THE SUSPENSION AND STEERING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 11V-244 RECALL, MANUFACTURER RECALL NUMBER: R1108. I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE WHICH WAS IN SEATTLE WA. I LIVE IN ILLINOIS AND TOOK THIS CAR YESTERDAY TO ANDERSON NISSAN IN ROCKFORD, IL FOR THE OPEN RECALL. I WAS TOLD THAT THEIR INSPECTION SHOWED NO RUST AND DUE TO THE LIFE OF THIS CAR, NO FURTHER ACTION WILL BE TAKEN ON THIS RECALL. MY CONCERN IS THAT NOW THAT THIS CAR WILL BE EXPOSED TO SNOW AND SALT, IT WILL RUST!! THIS CAR IS IN GOOD CONDITION AND I HOPE TO GET MANY MORE YEARS OUT OF IT (ODOMETER IS 152,500 MILES). MY 1999 NISSAN PATHFINDER HAD GONE BACK TO THE DEALER IN 2014 AS THERE WAS A RECALL ON STRUT TOWER FAILURE IN HIGH ROAD SALT SECTIONS OF THE COUNTRY. THEY REPAIRED THE DRIVER SIDE STRUT TOWER AND HALF OF THE PASSENGER SIDE TOWER THE ENCLOSED PICTURES SHOW WHERE THEY STOPPED THE REPAIR. THIS IS WHERE THE TOWER FAILED. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE MANSFIELD OHIO NISSAN MMG DEALERSHIP TO BE INSPECTED FOR A CORROSION RECALL. THE DEALERSHIP PROVIDED ME WITH A LOANER WHILE THE INSPECTIONS WERE CARRIED OUT. NISSAN DECIDED THAT THE CAR WAS NOT REPAIRABLE AND OFFERED TO BUY THE VEHICLE FOR $5,600. I HAD A FEW DAYS TO CONSIDER THE OFFER BUT WAS UNDER IMMENSE PRESSURE AND THREATS THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR STORAGE CHARGES FOR MY CAR ON THEIR LOT AND ALSO THE LOANER CAR IF I DID NOT ACCEPT THEIR OFFER. THE DEALERSHIP EVEN THREATENED RESORTING TO "OTHER MEASURES" WHICH I INTERPRETED AS "CALL THE POLICE" IF I DID NOT EITHER ACCEPT THE OFFER OR RETURN THE LOANER CAR. WE ARE A SINGLE INCOME FAMILY, PARTIALLY DISABLE SPOUSE WHO CAN'T WORK WITH 2 KIDS IN COLLEGE SO I CAN'T AFFORD A CAR PAYMENT OR TO TAKE A LOSS ON THE VEHICLE. I TOLD NISSAN THAT I COULD NOT AFFORD THEIR OFFER BECAUSE I HAD DECIDED ABOUT A YEAR AGO THAT I NEED TO GET ANOTHER 100K MILES OUT OF THIS CAR AND THEN PROCEEDED TO INVEST ABOUT $4,000 INTO MAJOR MAINTENANCE THAT WOULD EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE CAR. I WAS WILLING TO PROVE ALL OF IT WITH RECEIPTS. I WAS TOLD BY NISSANN THAT THEY WOULD NEVER PAY ME FOR THIS MAINTENANCE, NO MATTER WHAT. I ASKED FOR A COPY OF THE INSPECTION REPORT SO I COULD ASSESS THE RISK AND THAT WAS DENIED. I COULD NOT FINANCIALLY AFFORD THE OFFER AND COULD NOT LONGER TOLERATE THE STRESS OF WORRYING ABOUT NOT HAVING A CAR OR THE POLICE AFTER ME SO I RETURNED THE LOANER AND PICKED UP MY CAR AND HAVE PUT IT BACK INTO FULL SERVICE. WHEN LEAVING THE LOT I HEAR A NOISE IN THE FRONT AND FELT SOMETHING IN THE STEERING THAT I HAVE NEVER NOTICED BEFORE. I HAVE SINCE HEARD IT A FEW MORE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE IT WAS DOCUMENTED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE SUSPENSION, LEFT HOUSING AND LEFT SIDE STRUT SEAMS WERE RUSTED AND BROKEN DUE TO MAJOR CORROSION. OUR 1999 1/2 NISSAN PATHFINDER'S STEERING COLUMN SEPARATED FROM THE WHEELS CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO A CURBING. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC AND THEY DID A TEMPORARY FIX BUT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SO RUSTED OUT ON THE DRIVER SIDE THAT IT NEEDED TO BE WELDED BACK TOGETHER WITH A PIECE OF SHEET METAL. WE SPOKE TO THREE DIFFERENT SHEET METAL SHOPS AND ALL SAID THAT THEY WOULD NOT DO IT BECAUSE OF SAFETY CONCERNS. WE BELIEVE THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE STRUT TOWER AND LED TO OUR LOOSING OUR STEERING. THIS OCCURRED IN JULY 2009, AT THAT TIME, WE KNEW NOTHING OF A RECALL INVOLVING THIS PROBLEM, I CALLED NISSAN AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND THERE WERE NO RECALLS. DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED, WE HAD TO JUNK IT. THE CAR WAS ONLY 10 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME AND ALWAYS MAINTAINED. I'VE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS OTHERS WITH MY ONE OWNER 99 PATHFINDER. THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE WHEELWELL FRAME ASSEMBLY HAS RUSTED AND SEPARATED TO THE POINT THAT IT IS TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. IT IS AT THE REPAIR SHOP NOW, I AM WAITING FOR THE ESTIMATE FOR REPAIR COST, I'VE BEEN TOLD TO EXPECT A MINIMUM OF $1500. I HOPE OTHERS RESPOND AND COMPLAIN SO THAT MAYBE NISSAN WILL OWN UP TO MANUFACTURING A VEHICLE WITH DEFECTIVE METAL AND AT LEAST ISSUE A RECALL. THESE VEHICLES ARE DANGEROUS AS THE ENTIRE WHEEL ASSEMBLY CAN COLLAPSE AND CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. I TOOK EXCELLENT CARE OF MY SUV, THE ENGINE AND THE REST IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, BUT I WAS TOTALLY UNAWARE OF THE EXTENSIVE RUST UNTIL I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP FOR STRUT REPLACEMENT AND THEY INFORMED ME OF THE CONDITION. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE HOME BUT THAT DRIVE HOME CAUSED MORE DAMAGE AND THAT'S WHEN I SAW THAT THE FRAME HAD COMPLETELY SEPARATED CAUSED BY THE WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE AND I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE REPAIR SHOP. THE MECHANIC FURTHER EXPLAINED THAT IT MAY POTENTIALLY CAUSE A FIRE OR EXPLOSION. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THAT FAILURE. THE PURCHASE DATE AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 140,000.

I HAVE A 1999 NISSAN PATHFINDER SE WITH 45,000 MILES ON IT. THE OTHER DAY, I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST AS THE TRANSMISSION GAVE OUT AS I WAS RETURNING FROM WORK. THE VEHICLE IS IN "EXCELLENT" CONDITION ALL OVER WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE TRANSMISSION WHICH JUST COST ME $2,568 TO GET REBUILT. THE TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST INFORMED ME THAT I WAS THE 3RD 1999 NISSAN PATHFINDER THAT HE RECEIVED THERE WITH LESS THAN 45,000 MILES ON THEM, ALL WERE MANUFACTURED IN NOVEMBER, 1998, AND THAT HE HAD TO REBUILD THE TRANSMISSION ON EACH ONE PF THEM. HE INFORMED ME THAT NISSAN HAD A PROBLEM THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF BUT NEVER BROUGHT IT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE OWNERS OF THE VEHICLES. HE SAID THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED. FUNNY, ALL MADE IN NOVEMBER, 1998. THERE IS NO WAY A PATHFINDER IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH 45,000 MILES ON IT SHOULD HAVE THE TRANSMISSION GIVE OUT. I SENT 4 EMAILS TO NISSAN WITHOUT ANY SATISFACTION INCLUDING ONE TO THEIR PRODUCT EXECUTIVE WHO DID NOT RESPOND. THE ONLY RESPONSE I RECEIVED WAS TAKE IT TO A DEALER. AS TESTIMONY TO PRECISION MANUFACTURING SKILL, THEY ALL FAIL AT THE SAME TIME, I.E., NOT LONG AFTER THE FEDERAL WARRANTY ON EMISSIONS PARTS EXPIRES. THIS USUALLY HAPPENS AFTER I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR A WHILE, THEN PARK, SHUT THE ENGINE OFF FOR A TIME AND WHEN I GET BACK IN THE CAR, THEN TURN THE KEY TO START. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO TWO DEALERS AS WELL AS NISSAN CORPORTATE WITH NO SATISFACTION. THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS FOUR YEARS AFTER PURCHASE (PURCHASE DATE 2/99). I RECENTLY PURCHASE A 1999-1/2 NISSAN PATHFINDER SE LIMITED. SOON AFTER WE HAD 3 TO 4 EXPERIENCES WHERE THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN WHILE COMING TO A STOP. EVEN APPLY THE BRAKES CANT STOP THE CAR FROM WANTING TO RACE OFF, I HAVE TO QUICKLY TURN THE INGNITION OFF WITH THE KEY. IVE HAD 2 NISSAN DEALER SERVICES AND THE TOYOTA DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM TEST AND DRIVE OVER 50-60 MILES AND NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.MY WIFE AND I FEEL THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT CAN CAUSE INJURY OR EVEN DEATH TO US OR SOMEONE IF IT EVER HAPPENS. *AK

LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND IT CAN'T BE SEEN AT DEALER FOR ANOTHER WEEK. A FEW MONTHS AGO I HAD TO GET THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED AND THE REAR AND FRONT SHOCKS REPLACED AND THE CAR IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD. WHEN DRIVING 75 MPH ON A HIGHWAY IN ALABAMA. THE CAR SUDDENLY FELT VERY BUMPY (AS WE WERE DRIVING ON THE TIRE RIM) AND THEN IN A MATTER OF SECONDS THE DRIVER LOST CONTROL BUT MANAGED TO STEER THE CAR OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AFTER LETTING IT SLOW DOWN ON ITS OWN AND TAKE ITS COURSE. AFTER EXAMINING THE TIRE, WE SAW THAT THE TREAD HAD COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE TIRE, ALL THE WAY AROUND THE ENTIRE TIRE. IT REMAINED HELD TOGETHER BY A FEW STEEL THREADS, BUT 90% OF THE STEEL THREADS ARE STICKING OUT OF THE SIDE OF THE TIRE AND THE TIRE IS COMPLETELY TORN APART AT THE TREAD SEPARATION POINTS. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL TIRE THAT CAME WITH THE CAR WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED. IT IS THE ORIGINAL EXTRA TIRE (STORED ON THE BACK OF THE CAR AS A SPARE), THAT WAS PUT ON THE CAR IN JULY OF 1999 AFTER A FLAT IN ONE OF THE OTHER TIRES. THE 2 FRONT TIRES ON THE CAR ARE ALSO OF THIS MAKE AND MODEL (DUNLOP GRANDTREK TG35 P265/70R15), AND WE ARE VERY AFRAID THAT THERE IS A CHANCE THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN AND WE WON'T BE AS LUCKY AS WE WERE TO WALK AWAY FROM THIS. WE WERE TOWING OUR 18FT BOAT UP A HILL NEAR A LAKE IN SAN DIEGO WHEN WE EXPERIENCED COMPLETE ENGINE/POWER/BRAKE FAILURE ON A HILL WITH NO GUARD RAIL. THE WEIGHT OF THE BOAT PULLED US BACKWARD OUT OF CONTROL UNTIL WE JACKNIFED TO THE LEFT INTO THE SIDE OF THE HILL WHICH HELD US IN PLACE UNTIL THE PARK RANGERS TOWED US OUT. IF WE HAD JACKNIFED TO THE RIGHT, OUR ENTIRE FAMILY WOULD HAVE BEEN PULLED OVER THE EDGE OF THE HILL AND DOWN A CLIFF. ALL BRAKE SYSTEMS FAILED (FOOT AND EMERGENCY) AND THE ENGINE COULD NOT PULL THE WEIGHT OF THE TRAILER/BOAT. THE TRAILER/BOAT WERE WELL WITHIN THE MANUFACTUER'S GUIDLINES FOR TOWING CAPACITY OF 3,500 LBS.
