The contact owns a 2004 Land Rover Range Rover. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle independently downshifted without warning. The contact stated that the vehicle resumed normal operation after the failure and returned moments later. The contact had notified the dealer of the failure but was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V635000 (Power Train). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER ON MY CAR HAS A KNOWN DEFECT WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER LAND ROVER EXTENDED WARRANT PROGRAM Q058. ON MY SPECIFIC CAR, THE WARRANTY PERIOD EXPIRED ON MAY 11, 2015. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC DIAGNOSED A BAD CATALYTIC CONVERTER ON MY CAR IN FEB 04, 2014 AND TOLD ME ABOUT THE EXTENDED WARRANT PROGRAM COVERING THIS KNOWN ISSUE. I MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH LAND ROVER MANHATTAN DEALERSHIP BUT WASN'T SUCCESSFUL IN GETTING AN APPOINTMENT UNTIL AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. LAND ROVER IS REFUSING TO COVER THE REPAIR AND I HAVE BEEN TOSSED BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE LAND ROVER DEALER AND CORPORATE OFFICE. I THINK LAND ROVER WAITED UNTIL AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED SO THEY CAN AVOID PAYING FOR THE REPAIR.

"MY 2004 RANGE ROVER SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AT A VERY HIGH SPEED FOR A FEW SECONDS WHILE I WAS PARKING CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE CAR AND PROPERTY. ALSO NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED EVEN THOUGH THE IMPACT WAS SEVERE. I WOULD LIKE TO BE INFORMED OF ANY SUCH ISSUES AND WHAT STEPS WERE TAKEN TO CORRECT THEM. I PURCHASED A 2004 RANGE ROVER ON THE EVENING OF 05/12/11 FROM MOMENTUM LAND ROVER IN TEXAS. ON THE MORNING OF 05/13/11 THE CAR BEGAN TO OVER HEAT AND STOPPED. TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY CLAIMED THAT THE WRONG TYPE OF COOLANT WAS PLACED IN THE CAR. MIND YOU, THAT I DID NOT SERVICE THE CAR WITHIN THE 10 HOURS I DROVE OFF THE LOT. THE NEXT MORNING IT STARTED FINE, WE BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND WHEN WE SHIFTED TO DRIVE A TRANSMISSION FAILSAFE CAME ON AND WE COULD NOT EVEN MOVE FORWARD. WE HAD TO BACK OWN THE STREET TO PARK AND THEN CALL A TOW TRUCK. WHEN IT GOT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED. I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP IF THERE WAS A RECALL AND WAS TOLD NO. I WENT ONLINE AND FOUND THERE WAS ONE THAT WOULD CAUSE LOSS OF DRIVE IF IT WASN'T FIXED. I THEN CALLED LAND ROVER AND EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE TRYING TO BE HELPFUL, INFORMING THERE WAS A RECALL AND THAT OUR VEHICLE HAD ALREADY BEEN REPAIRED, THEY WERE COMPLETELY UNABLE TO HELP ME OUT AT ALL. IT STARTED ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO AFTER I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR A RECALL ISSUE I RECEIVED IN THE MAIL REGARDING THE DIFFERENTIALS AND FRONT DRIVE SHAFT. I FIGURE IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE IT FIXED AS A PREVENTABLE MEASURE. SHORTLY AFTER (ABOUT 2 WEEKS) I STARTED NOTICING "TRANS PROG ERROR" APPEAR ON MY DASHBOARD DISPLAY BUT IT WOULD DISAPPEAR AND REAPPEAR AND FIGURE IF THE LIGHT DOES NOT STAY ON IT SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE. THAN MY CAR ONE DAY WHILE DRIVING ON THE FAST LANE OF THE HIGHWAY JUST LOST POWER AND DISPLAYED TO PUT CAR IN NEUTRAL. I HAD TO GET THE CAR TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS A SENSOR AND THAT I SHOULD TRY A TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE FIRST. THAT DID NOT HELP, I CONTINUED DRIVING FOR ANOTHER 2 WEEKS WITH GETTING STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY SEVERAL TIMES AT VERY DANGEROUS TIMES (IE. AFTER 2AM) WITH CLOSE CALLS, FORTUNATELY NOTHING HAPPENED TO ME BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THAT THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE. I TOOK THE CAR TO LR DEALERSHIP REPAIR AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER BOX AMONG OTHER THINGS THAT WOULD BRING IT TO A $11-15K JOB. NO PROBLEMS OBSERVED WITH THE CAR. SUDDENLY THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME LOOSE AND FELL DOWN TO A POSITION WHERE THE BOTTOM OF THE WHEEL WAS STUCK BETWEEN MY LEGS. THE TILT MECHANISM FAILED WHILE THE CAR WAS THE MOVING AND THE WHEEL, ALTHOUGH ATTACHED TO THE CAR, WAS FORCED DOWN ONTO MY LEGS. STEERING WHEEL WOULD NO LONGER STAY IN A DRIVABLE POSITION WITHOUT $1300 REPLACEMENT OF STEERING COLUMN. VEHICLE LOOSES ALL FORWARD DRIVE WHEN DRIVE SHAFT AND DIFFERENTIAL SPINES SHEER OFF. THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED ON THE INTERNET BY A LARGE POPULATION OF OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE. I WAS TRAVELING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON I-75 NORTH AT THE I-75 AND I-10 INTERCHANGE WHEN WITHOUT ANY WARNING THE SHAFT FAILED LEAVING ME WITHOUT THE ABILIY TO DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN STOP. I WAS NEARLY HIT BY A TRACTOR TRAILOR AS I WAS ON AN UP HILL GRADE AND WAS NOT ABLE TO GET COMPLETELY OFF THE EXPRESS WAY BEFORE THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. THE VEHICLE'S PARK SELECTOR ON THE SHIFTER WAS INOPERATIVE AND THE VEHICLE COULD ONLY BE HELD IN PLACE USING THE PARKING BRAKE. THE DEALER SAID THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THAT A RETORFIT WAS IN THE WORKS AND WOULD BE AVAILABLE WITHIN 30 DAYS. THE DEALER HAD TO INSTALL AN ORIGINAL PART WHICH ACCORDING TO HIM DOES NOT CONTAIN THE RE-ENGINEERED FIX. THE PARTS REPLACED ON THE VEHICLE IS AS FOLLOWS; MANIFOLD ASSY. MOTOR ASSY FOR WIPER BLADES,WINDOW REGULATOR,TIMING BELT AND DIFFERENTIAL FRONT MOUNTING WHICH DID NOT RESOLVE RATTLING NOISE UNDERNEATH CAR. MILWAUKEE DEALERSHIP HAS ALSO ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT THESE SAME PROBLEMS WITH NO SUCCESS. THE COOLANT LEAK IS STILL APPARENT AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AGAIN. THE ENGINE/HEAD GASKET ISSUE IS THE REPAIR THAT IS THE MOST CRITICAL AND TERMINAL CONDITION FOR THE VEHICLE. THE DEALERS MECHANICS WILL NEVER FIX THE GASKET, SO THEY WILL ONLY OFFER THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT, BUT EITHER REPAIR WILL COST YOU MORE THAN THE SUV IS WORTH. I AM THE OWNER OF A 2005 RANGE ROVER. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED IN 2006 WITH 60,000 MILE'S ON IT. IN JUNE 2007, THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL BROKE WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF TWO BUSY INTERSECTIONS. TRAFFIC WAS HALTED UNTIL SOME MEN PUSHED MY CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THERE WAS NO WARNING LEADING UP TO THIS BREAKDOWN. IN FACT, THE CAR WAS JUST AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE 75,000 MILE CHECKUP. NOT TO MENTION RANGE ROVER CHARGED ME $3,000.00 FOR THIS REPAIR.. THE MOST RECENT FRONT DIFFERENTIAL BREAKDOWN WAS MORE SERIOUS SINCE IT OCCURRED ON THE EXPRESSWAY IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. WHILE TRAVELING TO BIRMINGHAM AL. FROM ATLANTA GA. AT A SPEED OF 70 MILES PER/HR THE CAR MADE A SUDDEN GRINDING NOISE AND STOP ACCELERATING. ONCE I REALIZED WGAT WAS GOING ON I STARTED GETTING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT WAS SCARY BECAUSE PART OF THE TRUCK WAS STILL IN THE FREEWAY LANE AND TRUCKS AND CARS WERE AVOIDING HITTING US. MY TEENAGE SON HAD TO PUSH THE CAR OFF THE FREEWAY. AFTER THIS BEING THE SECOND TIME IN PERIL I AM NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE THAT I OWE A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF MONEY ON. THIS LAST INCIDENT OCCURRED ON MARCH 07, 2008. THE PART WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY SINCE IT HAD ONLY BEEN 9 MONTHS AND LESS THAN 8,000 MILES SINCE THE LAST FRONT DIFFERENTIAL WAS REPLACED. FIRST OCCURRENCE - DRIVING IN RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD ABOUT 10-15MPH. MY 2003 RR MADE A BIG CLUNKING NOISE THEN IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED AND AWFUL SCREECHING NOISE. I WAS UNABLE TO DRIVE, TRUCK INSTANTLY STOPPED AND SCREEN STATED PUT IN NEUTRAL. I WAS STRANDED ON SIDE OF ROAD WAITING FOR A TOW TRUCK WITH MY 3 CHILDREN, THE YOUNGEST WAS 4 MONTHS. SECOND OCCURRENCE - LESS THAN 1 YEAR LATER, I WAS ON VACATION IN CLEVELAND OHIO THANKSGIVING TIME. DRIVING ABOUT 30 MPH AND THE SAME EXACT NOISE HAPPENED AND INSTANTLY THE TRUCK STOPPED, I KNEW EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS. IT WAS 11:30 PM, I CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND THERE WERE NO TOW COMPANIES OPEN. FINALLY SOMEONE CAME TO ASSIST ME AND PUSHED MY 7000LB TRUCK INTO AN EMPTY LOT UNTIL THE NEXT DAY. WHEN THE HELP ARRIVED THEY PARKED ABOUT 3 FEET BEHIND MY TRUCK, NOT KNOWING THE TRUCK WAS NOT SAFE IN PARK MY TRUCK DRIFTED BACK AND HIT HIS NEW BMW TRUCK. BOTH TIMES THE DIFFERENTIAL WENT UP I HAD TO PAY FOR IT! OVER $2500 BOTH TIMES NOT TO MENTION THE COST TO TOW MY TRUCK BACK TO MD FROM OHIO $1600. I MUST SAY THAT WHEN MY TRUCK ARRIVED AT THE SHOP ALL OF THE MECHANICS KNEW ABOUT THE ISSUE WITH RR'S AND THEIR DIFFERENTIALS. THIS IS SO SAD, THERE IS NO WARNING IT JUST HAPPENS. I EXPECTED SO MUCH MORE FROM RANGE ROVER, THE NAME TO ME MEANS QUALITY BUT THIS VEHICLE HAS NOT LIVED UP TO ITS NAME. I WAS TRAVELING IN MY 2004 RANGE ROVER WITH 47K MILES ON I-H201 IN HAWAII AT 55 MPH WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY REVVED UP, THE WARNING SIGN CAME ON AND SAID TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND IT STOPPED ACCELERATING. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND ROLLED TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. THE CAR COULD NOT LONGER GET INTO GEAR, MADE HORRIBLE GRINDING NOISES, AND ONLY COULD ONLY STOP WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ENGAGED (PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK DID NOTHING). MY HUSBAND, SON 10 YRS OLD, MYSELF , AND TWO PUGS WERE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 31 AT APPX 65 MPH WHEN SUDDENLY OUR CAR MADE A LOUD CRACK NOISE AND SUDDENLY STOPPED ACCELERATING TELLING US TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL. WE WERE ON OUR WAY ON VACATION APPX 90 MILES OUT OF TOWN. FORTUNATELY THE LAND ROVER DEALER WAS OPEN AT 630 PM AND WHEN WE DESCRIBED WHAT HAD HAPPENED HE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. WE HAD TO WAIT 3 HOURS ON BARELY WHAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD IN THE SNOW AND WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO TOW OUR CAR TO THE NEAREST LAND ROVER DEALER. THE CAR HAS 54,000 MILES ON IT AND WE PAID 63,000 DOLLARS FOR THE VEHICLE. AFTER NAVIGATING ACROSS MULTIPLE LANES OF MODERATELY HEAVY TRAFFIC WITH NO POWER, I CAME TO A STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND CALLED FOR ASSISTANCE. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CLOSEST LAND ROVER DEALER AND THE PROBLEM DIAGNOSED, IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL HAD FAILED. I'VE SINCE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE AND FOUND THAT MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM AND LAND ROVER HAS EVEN ISSUED TECHNICAL BULLETINS REGARDING THIS REPEATED FAILURE. DESPITE THAT, I HAD NEVER BEEN MADE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE BY THE MANUFACTURER DESPITE THAT FACT THAT IT HAS BEEN IN THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT EVERY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE INTERVAL AND ON MANY OTHER OCCASIONS FOR OTHER WORK. IN FACT, IT WAS IN THEIR SHOP APPROXIMATELY 2,000 MILES PRIOR TO THIS FAILURE FOR A NUMBER OF OTHER WARRANTY RELATED ITEMS AND THIS FAILING MECHANISM WAS NOT DETECTED/FIXED DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT WAS LIKELY CLOSE TO FAILURE AT THAT POINT AND DETECTION OF THE PROBLEM IS POSSIBLE VIA NOTHING MORE THAN A GLANCE AT THE POINT WHERE THE SHAFT AND DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING MEET. (PROPELLER SHAFT) THIS IS THE SECOND PROBLEM WITH DIFFERENTIAL ISSUES. (BOTH IN THE SAME DAY!) AGAIN, LRNA IS AWARE OF THE ONGOING PROBLEMS WITH IT'S DRIVE SHAFTS ON THE ROVER. AFTER TALKING TO THEM IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT THEY DON'T CARE THAT THEY HAVE A CAR OUT THERE ON THE ROAD WITH PROBLEMS THAT COULD KILL SOMEONE. TAKE SOME ACTION! *NM

WHILE DRIVING THE STEERING COLUMN DROPPED IN MY LAP!!!! CAR GOES TO DEALER AND THEY REPLACED BROKEN STEERING COLUMN. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAVE HAD MANY CASES OF THIS. NHTSA NEEDS TO HOLD LRNA LIABLE FOR THIS AND MAKE THEM FIX THIS COMMON PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. BETWEEN THIS AND THE DIFFERENTIAL ISSUES SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT OR KILLED. WHILE DRIVING HOME THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL STARTED LEAKING. PARK THE CAR AND FIND THICK FLUID ON THE GROUND. TAKE TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY FIND LEAKING FRONT DRIVE SHAFT JOINT O-RING. THEY REPLACED AND ALIGNED FRONT DIFF. LRNA IS AWARE OF DIFFERENTIAL PROBLEMS AND THE DANGERS THAT CAN COME FROM IT. AFTER TALKING TO LRNA ABOUT THE MANY PROBLEMS WE HAVE HAD WITH THIS CAR IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMER OTHER THEN TO KEEP FIXING THE CAR UNDER THERE WARRANTY. I HAVE HEARD OF MANY CASES OF FRONT DIFFERENTIAL'S GOING BAD ON THE ROVER FORUM. PLEASE CHECK INTO THIS BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. *NM
