TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 KIA SPORTAGE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EMITTED STRONG FUEL FUMES ON THE EXTERIOR AND THE INTERIOR. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A MANUFACTURER'S RECALL AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE TIMING BELT FAILED THREE TIMES AND WAS REPLACED BY A MECHANIC. THE DRIVE TRAIN FAILED ONCE AND WAS REPLACED BY A MECHANIC. THE CRANK SHAFT WAS ALSO REPLACED ONCE. THE CONTACT ALSO WAS EXPERIENCING A TRANSMISSION FAILURE IN WHICH THE GEARS SLIPPED RANDOMLY AND WERE SLOW TO CHANGE OVER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER MORE THAN THREE TIMES AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT REPLACED THE SEALS DUE TO THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THE FUEL LEAK CONTINUED AND WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED NO REMEDY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 333,000.

I HAD JUST FILLED GAS TANK WITH UNLEADED GAS. WHEN I NOTICED A STRONG GAS SMELL. THE CAR SITS ALL DAY. I ONLY MOVE IT FOR EMISSIONS EACH YEAR I WORK FROM HOME. THEY TESTED AND TOLD ME EVAP EMISSION CONTROL SYS MALF. THE GUY SAID HE COULD SEE GAS LEAKING FROM MY FUEL LINE. HE SAID IT WAS A RECALL ON THIS TO CHECK WITH KIA. KIA TOLD ME MY VIN NUMBER DID NOT MATCH THE RECALL. THIS CAR DOES NOT SEE ALOT OF ACTION THERE IS NO REASON OTHER THAN A FEW GOOD SNOWS THAT MAY HAVE RUSTED THE TANK OTHER WISE WHY WOULD MY TANK ALL OF A SUDDEN LEAK GAS. THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FRAME IS ALMOST NON EXISTENT AND THE DRIVERS SIDE ISN'T MUCH BETTER THERE ARE HOLES AND PIECES OF THE FRAME GONE. 1999 KIA SPORTAGE. I HAVE OWNED IT SINCE 2008. I HAVE HAD THE GAS TANK PATCHED 3 TIMES, THEN COMPLETELY REPLACED COST OF OVER 400 DOLLARS. MY MECHANIC SAID THE TANK KEPT RUSTING NO MATTER WHAT HE TRIED AND IT WAS DEFECTIVE. ALL REAR BRAKES TWICE AND NOW WITH EVEN NEW LEVER AND OTHER PARTS 420 DOLLARS. THE ENTIRE UNDERCARRIAGE HAS RUSTED OUT AND THE FAME IS SEPARATING FROM EACH OTHER, LEANING ON THE SHOCK ABSORBERS ON BOTH SIDES, THERE ARE LARGE HOLES IN THE FAME WHERE THEY HAVE RUSTED THROUGH, THE FUEL TANK AND SHIELD IS RUSTED OUT AND THIS CAR IS A TICKING TIME BOMB, READY TO FALL APART, AND OR IF ANYTHING HITS THE FUEL TANK IT WILL DISINTEGRATE AND POSSIBLY EXPLODE. I NOTICED A COUPLE WEEKS AGO IT WAS MAKING A HORRIBLE NOISE IN THE RIGHT REAR OF THE CAR, TOOK IT IN THINKING IT NEEDED SHOCKS AND THEY REFUSED TO FIX IT BECAUSE THE FRAME IS RUSTED THROUGH AND BROKEN JUST BEHIND THE GAS TANK (WHICH IS NEW). THEY INFORMED ME THIS CAR WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE MY LITTLE GRANDBABIES IN ANY LONGER AND WOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY REPAIRS THAT COULDN'T GUARANTEE OUR SAFETY. NOW THE FRAME IS BUSTED FROM PREMATURE RUSTING AND DISINTEGRATION WHICH IS HOLDING UP THE GAS TANK. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY ON FOR "EVAP LEAK" . NO POWER WHEN A/C IS RUNNING. A/C NOW HAS LEAK. CONSTANTLY SMELL A BURNING SMELL JUST BEFORE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. ALSO CONSTANTLY BLOWS FUSES FOR POWER WINDOWS ETC. ON DECEMBER 22, 2008, DURING VEHICLE INSPECTION, FOUND GAS SMELL AND POSSIBLE LEAK IN GAS TANK. PHONE KIA DEALERSHIP, AND THEY INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A SERVICE CAMPAIGN, AND TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR A FUEL TANK INSPECTION (ALONG WITH SOME OTHER RECALL REPAIRS). ON 1/2/2009, THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY THE KIA DEALERSHIP, AND THEY INDICATED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK, AND THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AND MAY BE COVERED BY A SERVICE CAMPAIGN. SHORTLY THEREAFTER I NOTICED FLUID LEAKING FROM THE REAR OF MY VEHICLE. I TOOK IT IN AROUND THANKSGIVING TO FIND OUT THAT THE GAS TANK HAD TO BE REPLACED. I HAD TO PAY ALMOST $1,000 FOR THIS REPAIR. ALSO, IN MAY OF 2006 POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKED ALL OVER MY GARAGE WHILE THE CAR WAS IN SUMMER STORAGE. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION IT IS DUE TO THE POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE DAMPING PIPE RUSTING OUT. THIS CAR HAS ALSO ALREADY HAVE TO GET NEW FRONT BRAKE ROTORS (RUSTED/WARPED) AS WELL AS A NEW EXHAUST PIPE SINCE THE PREVIOUSLY ONE RUSTED OFF THE MUFFLER. THE VEHICLE WAS THROWN OUT OF CONTROL WENT INTO A DITCH DID A HALF ROLL ON ITS SIDE TOOK OUT 6 MAILBOXES CONTINUED ON ALL FOUR WHEELS FOR ABOUT A HUNDRED FEET CAME TO STOP ON OTHER SIDE OF ROAD. THE VEHICLE JUST HAD BEEN SERVICED AND TIRES ROTATED FROM BACK TO FRONT A WEEK BEFORE AND LOOKED GREAT THE POLICE OFFICER AT THE SCENE SAID THERE WAS NO OBJECTS IN THE ROAD TO CAUSE FAILURE AND MY SON AND HUSBAND DID NOT FEEL ANYTHING OR SEE ANYTHING IN THE ROAD. THE SHOP THEN INDICATING THERE HAD BEEN A WIRING RECALL SO THEY CHANGED OUT THE WIRING HARNESS. TWO DAYS LATER THE VEHICLE ALMOST DIED ON THE WAY TO THE AIRPORT, IT WOULD SHAKE VIOLENTLY WHEN IDLING AND THERE WAS VERY LIMITED POWER WHEN I WAS ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE. THE SHOP LOOKED AT IT AGAIN AND THE AIR MANIFEST INDICATOR CAME ON SO THEY CLEANED OUT THE AIR FLOW. TWO DAYS LATER IT WAS STILL DOING THE SAME THING. THE SHOP THEN INDICATING THAT THEIR SENSOR INDICATED A DIFFERENT PART OF THE SYSTEM WAS FAILING. THE SHOP CONTACTED A KIA FACILITATED AND WAS TOLD IT SOUNDED LIKE A COMPUTER ISSUE, HOWEVER, EVEN IF THE COMPUTER WAS CHANGED OUT, IT COULD BE A SENSOR ISSUE AND THE VEHICLE WOULD CONTINUE TO DIE WHEN I WAS DRIVING IN TRAFFIC AND/OR PULLING FROM A STOP. 1999 KIA SPORTAGE HAS HAD TIMING BELT REPLACED THREE TIMES SINCE I BOUGHT CAR NEW IN 1999. WHILE TRAVELING ON NJ TURNPIKE, WHAT WE BELIEVED WAS THE TIMING BELT YET AGAIN WAS THE CRANK SHAFT AT THE HARMONIC BALANCE (WHICH HOLDS THE TIMING BELT IN PLACE) COMPLETELY SNAPPED INTO TWO PIECES INSIDE THE ENGINE. I SPOKE TO SEVERAL DIFFERENT KIA SERVICE DEPARTMENTS WHO ADVISED ME THAT THIS WAS NOT A NORMAL THING AND WAS IN NO WAY DUE TO SOMETHING WE COULD HAVE DONE. I WAS TOLD BY MY KIA DEALER THAT THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED LAST YEAR AND THAT I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEFECT IN THE KIA. THE FIRST THREE TIMES THAT THE TIMING BELT WAS REPLACED THE WARRANTY COVERED. NOW I AM TOLD I MUST PAY FOR A NEW ENGINE. BE ADVISED THAT EVERY TIME THIS HAPPENED THE CAR WAS GOING 55 M.P.H. OR OVER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND WHY THE LIGHTS FLICKERED. ON AUGUST 2, 2005 MY VEHICLE DIED IN FRONT OF A MARATHON GAS STATION/REPAIR SHOP IN ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. THE MECHANIC CALLED ME AND TOLD ME I NEEDED A NEW FUEL PUMP. I TOLD HIM TO DO THE REPAIR. THE NEXT DAY, THE MECHANIC CALLS ME TO TELL ME THAT THE FUEL TANK IS SO RUSTED IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND HE HAS ALREADY CALLED THE KIA DEALER AND THE FUEL TANK IS IN "STOCK". ALL OF THESE RECALLS WERE IN EFFECT BEFORE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I TOOK MY SPORTAGE INTO THE DEALER AND EXPLAINED THAT THE SPORTAGE OCCASSIONALLY WOULD NOT START, EVERYTHING ELSE WOULD WORK PERFECTLY. I HAD MY STARTER AND BATTERY TESTED BEFORE I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER BOTH CHECKED OUT FINE. IT HAD COMPLETELY BROKEN OFF THE FRAME AT THE BRACKET WHERE IT WAS WELDED TO THE FRAME. THERE WAS ABOUT A 10-12 INCH HOLE IN THE FRAME AND BOTH THE BRACKET AND THE FRAME WHERE BROKEN WERE COVERED INSIDE AND OUT WITH RUST. I CALLED THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT MY WARRANTY WAS UP. I ASKED THEM TO REFERENCE WHERE IN THE HANDBOOK THEY WOULD WARRANTY THE FRAME. AFTER GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH THEM FOR THE LAST 3 MONTHS THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING FOR ME. THEY KEEP SAYING THAT IT IS NOT A WARRANTY ITEM. I HAD MY INSURANCE COMPANY COME LOOK AT THE CAR. THEY TOOK DIGITAL PICTURES AND HE SAID THAT IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURE DEFECT AND A TERRIBLE INSUFFICIENT WELD JOB AND IT WAS NOT SEALED WOULD EXPLAIN THE RUST. AFTER CLOSER EXAMINATION, I FOUND THE PLASTIC DOWELS HOLDING THE RETACTING MECHANISM TO THE SEATBELT HAD JUST FALLEN OFF OR WORN AWAY. HAD THIS FAILURE OCCURRED DURING AN ACCIDENT, THERE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS INJURIES. SEEMS THESE PLASTIC DOWELS SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH METAL OR STEEL ONES. THIS SUV HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS FROM DAY ONE, WITH EVERYTHING FROM THE AC TO THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE NEEDING REPAIRED TWICE IN ONE DAY, TO THE MOST SERIOUS PROBLEM HAPPENING ON 8-19-02 WHEN MY RIGHT REAR ANTI SWAY BAR BRACKET BREAKS AWAY FROM WHERE IT WAS WELDED ON THE FRAME IN THE FACTORY ( THE ORG. WELDS JUST BROKE ) AS MY DAUGHTER AND I ARE DRIVING THIS SUV HOME ONE EVENING CAUSING THIS SUV TO BE ALL OVER THE ROAD AND UNCONTROLLABLE. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS HURT OR KILLED BECAUSE OF THIS. IMMEDIATELY AFTER PURCHASING THIS USED VEHICLE, IT WOULD SPUTTER AND DIE WHEN APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE GAS. THIS USUALLY HAPPENS IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. I WOULD TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY WOULD ALLEGEDLY FIX THE PROBLEM THAN THE NEXT DAY IT WOULD DO IT AGAIN. I HAVE A 1999 KIA SPORTAGE. ON 23 APRIL, 2003 I ACCELERATED AFTER STOPPING AT A STOP SIGN AT AN INTERSECTION AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEARD A "CLUNK" SOUND COMING FROM MY TRANSMISSION, MY VEHICLE STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION AND THE "HOLD" LIGHT AND THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE MOVING AGAIN AFTER A FEW SECONDS AND AFTER CHECKING THINGS OUT IN A LOCAL PARKING LOT AND NOT SEEING ANYTHING WRONG UNDER THE HOOD I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL DEALER TO GET FIXED. THE VEHICLE WAS PUT ON THE DIAGNOSTICS MACHINE AND IT SHOWED THE P0101 CODE. THE FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM IS AROUND $500 AND MY WARRANTY DOESN'T COVER THIS PROBLEM. KIA HAS A BULLETIN ON HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, SO THEY ARE AWARE THAT THIS PROBLEM EXISTS. I CALLED KIA ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND THE PERSON I SPOKE WITH WAS VERY RUDE AND REFUSED TO LISTEN TO MY COMPLAINT AND TOLD ME IT'S MY PROBLEM, THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO AND THIS PROBLEM ISN'T A RECALL BECAUSE IT'S NOT A SAFETY CONCERN. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE. I ALSO HAD THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS STOP WORKING ON THE WAY HOME FROM WORK IN A SNOW STORM WITH MY FOUR YEAR OLD SON IN THE BACK. IT ALSO STARTED MAKING A LOUD RUMBLING NOISE THAT SOUNDED LIKE I WAS DRIVING OVER SPEED BUMPS. THIS LED TO THEM NEEDING TO REPLACE THE HUBS, BEARINGS, AND AXLE SHAFTS. CAR ONLY HAD APPROXIMATELY 33000 MILES ON IT. AT THE SAME TIME I WAS TOLD THAT THE FRONT BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS WERE BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS WAS AT A COST OF $400.00 TO ME. ON 11/11/99 LESS THAN 10 MINUTES AFTER PICKING UP THE VEHICLE, THE HORRIBLE SMELL CAME BACK AGAIN 10 TIMES WORSE THAN ORIGINALLY, HAD TO WAIT AN ENTIRE WEEK TO RETURN THE VEHICLE FOR SERVICE BECAUSE THEY WERE "BOOKED UP." ON 11/17/99 RETURNED VEHICLE TO SERVICE DEPARTMENT BEC OF CONTINOUS EXHAUST/CARBON MONOXIDE SMELL IN CABIN CAUSING TERRIBLE HEADACHES. THEY CLAIM TO HAVE REPLACED SOME KIND OF A CANISTER BUT HAD NO REAL DOCUMENTATION PROVING SO. SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND A CAUSE FOR THE ODORS/FUMES AND GAVE ME A RENTAL CAR. AFTER NO RESPONCE FROM DEALERSHIP IN 48 HOURS AS TO A STAUS UPDATE, WAS TOLD THAT A "KIA MOTORS FIELD REPRESENTATIVE" WOULD BE COMING TO THE DEALERSHIP ON 11/22/99 TO LOOK AT THE VEHICLE. ON 11/22/99 WAS TOLD THE REP WOULD BE THERE ON 11/23/99. ON 11/23/99 WAS TOLD HE WOULD BE THERE ON 11/24/99. ON 11/24/99 WAS TOLD BY DEALERSHIP OWNER TO COME PICK UP MY VEHICLE IN IT'S CURRENT UN-REPAIRED CONDITION BECAUSE THE FIELD REP. WOULD NOT BE OUT FOR ANOTHER 2-4 WEEKS AND THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT AFFORD TO PROVIDE ME WITH THE RENTAL CAR FOR THAT LENGTH OF TIME.
