Frame/ chassis cracked at steering box mount due to rusting from the inside of the frame out. There are holes and small open areas in the 4 sided frame. There is no wheel well material protecting this area from excessive amount of salt, water, dirt and debris entering in these holes as well, there is no way to maintain, clean, protect or inspect the insides of the frame to know your steering is going to fail. SPARK PLUG - I'M REALLY SHOCKED THIS HASN'T BEEN RECALLED! PURCHASED THIS 2001 FORD E-350 FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER WHO WAS A MECHANIC AND KEPT ALL SERVICE RECORDS OF THIS VEHICLE. IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. HAD THE VAN SERVICED AND LOOKED OVER BEFORE TAKING IT ON A LONGER TRIP. AT 2 AM AND ONLY AFTER 5 HOURS OF DRIVING (ALL HIGHWAY) WE HEARD A LOUD BANG FOLLOWED BY EVEN LOUDER RUMBLING AND INTENSE GAS SMELL. THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AND THE VAN WAS IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY. WE WERE ABLE TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY AND WAIT UNTIL THE MORNING. THE NEXT MORNING WE TOOK THE ENGINE APART AND FOUND THE SPARK PLUG COMPLETELY BLOWN OUT OF THE ENGINE. AFTER BUYING THE REPAIR KIT FROM THE PARTS STORE AND PUTTING IN A NEW SPARK PLUG WE WERE ABLE TO LIMP OUR WAY HOME. DUE TO THE FORCE CAUSED BY THE FIRST SPARK PLUG BEING SHOT OUT, THE ENGINE NOW SOUNDS LIKE SOME OTHER SPARK PLUGS ARE VERY LOOSE AND READY TO GO. NOT SURE THE TOTAL DAMAGE UNTIL IT CAN BE REPAIRED BY A MECHANIC.

I HAVE A 2001 FOCUS ZX3 - 5SP THAT TENDS TO STALL WHEN THE AC IS ON. BUT IT MAY NOT STALL DURING THE "INITIAL" USE PERIOD. WITHOUT WARNING, IT WILL STALL AFTER THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF AND THEN RESTARTED. MY SERVICE SHOP CHECKED THE COMPUTER CODES FOR A PROBLEM AND NOTHING CAME UP. YESTERDAY, IT WAS DRIVEN FOR ABOUT 30MINS WITH THE AC ON (OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE AROUND 80+ DEGREES). THE VEHICLE RAN FINE WITH THE RPMS NORMAL WHEN STOPPED. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF FOR ABOUT 90 MINS. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO RESTART IT WOULD STALL. TO GET STARTED I NEEDED TO KEEP FOOT ON GAS PEDAL (TO MAINTAIN A HIGH ENOUGH RPM TO PREVENT THE STALL). IF I DID NOT KEEP THE RPMS UP, VEHICLE WOULD STALL. WHILE DRIVING AND STOPPING, I NEEDED TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL TO MAINTAIN THE RPMS. (THIS CAN BE CHALLENGING WITH A 5-SPD.) THE VEHICLE WAS THEN PARKED FOR OVER FOUR HOURS. IT THEN STARTED WITHOUT PROBLEM AND RAN NORMALLY. DURING THIS PERIOD I DID NOT HAVE THE AC ON. I SEE THAT THIS MAY BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE FOCUS. HOWEVER, NEITHER FORD MOTOR'S CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE NOR THE LOCAL FORD DEALER ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A FORD DEALERSHIP (ECHELON FORD) ON 6/8/10 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY COULD NOT RECREATE IT. AMBULANCE ON FORD E-450 AND F-350 CHASSIS HAVE HAD MAJOR FUEL SYSTEM FAILURES. BOTH AMBULANCES IN THE PAST YEAR HAVE HAD THE LINING OF THE DIESELF FUEL TANKS RUST OFF AND GET PULLED INTO THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE METAL FLAKES HAVE RUINED SENDING UNITS,FUEL PUMPS, DIESEL INJECTORS, FUEL FILTERS AND FILTER HOUSINGS. IT HAS CAUSED THE AMBULANCES TO STALL WHILE TRANSPORTING CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS TO THE HOSPITAL. IR HAS ALSO COST CLOSE TO $9000.00 TO FIX BOTH AMBULANCES. ABS MODULE SHORTING OUT BECAUSE OF BRAKE FLUID IN THE MODULE. I HEARD A LOUD POPPING NOISE JUST OUTSIDE MY HOME WHERE MY VAN IS PARKED, LESS THAN 2 FT. FROM THE HOUSE, AND WENT OUT TO INVESTIGATE. SMOKE WAS BILLOWING FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, SO I RAISED THE HOOD AND DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY. THE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE AREA OF THE ABS MODULE, SO I REMOVED IT AND THE COVER HAD BLOWN OFF, AND THE CIRCUIT BOARD INSIDE WAS FRIED. THIS IS A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD, AND YET I WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE A RECALL ABOUT THIS ISSUE. MY VAN IS A 2001 FORD E-350. I OWN A 2001 FORD E250 VAN. THIS VAN HAS BEEN A RELIABLE VEHICLE AND MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN EASY AND PREDICTABLE. HOWEVER TODAY THE THIRD SPARK PLUG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE BLEW OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD. THOUGH IT WAS A EXHAUST LEAK AT FIRST BECAUSE OF THE SOUND. I PULLED OF THE FREEWAY AND OPENED THE ENGINE COVER. AT THIS POINT I RESTARTED THE ENGINE TO FIND THE EXHAUST LEAK. A LARGE FLAME IMMEDIATELY BEGAN BURSTING OUT OF THE OPEN SPARK PLUG HOLE. ALTHOUGH I WAS ABLE TO TURN THE ENGINE OFF QUICKLY THIS SCARED ME CONSIDERABLY AS I KNOW THEIR ARE FUEL LINES THAT RUN RIGHT BY THE SPARK PLUG. I HAD IT TOWED FROM THEIR TO A SHOP. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS AND FOUND THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MANY OF FORDS ENGINES. I EVEN FOUND CASES WERE CARS HAD BEEN DESTROYED BY FIRE AS A RESULT. IT CONCERNS ME THAT THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL. I DO NOT EXPECT WARRANTY FROM FORD FOR A VEHICLE THIS OLD. HOWEVER THIS SEEMS TO BE A POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM AND I WOULD THINK THAT MERITS A RECALL. I HAVE A THREE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER THAT RIDES IN HER CAR SEAT NEXT TO ME IN THE VAN AT TIMES. I HAVE A 2001 FORD E-350 VAN WITH A 7.3 LITRE DIESEL ENGINE. WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING ENGINE PROBLEMS AND UPON RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE WE PURCHASED IT, WE WERE INFORMED THAT THE FUEL TANK INTERIOR LINING HAS DEGRADED AND IS CLOGGING THE FUEL SYSTEM. ESTIMATES FOR THE REPAIR ARE IN THE RANGE OF $1500-1600. WE HAVE HAD THREE INCIDENTS INVOLVING TWO VEHICLES IN WHICH WHEELS HAVE COME OFF OF FORD F-550 VEHICLES DUE TO SHEARED LUG BOLTS. THE WEIGHTS OF ALL OF OUR VEHICLES HAVE BEEN RECORDED AND FALL BELOW THE MANUFACTURERS GVWR. PER A TIRE COMPANY'S RECOMMENDATION, WE HAVE ISSUED A MANDATE THAT ALL SIMILAR VEHICLES HAVE THEIR WHEELS RE-TORQUED, TO MEET THE MANUFACTURERS SPECIFICATIONS AFTER DRIVING, AFTER TRAVELING 50 MILES FOLLOWING ANY WORK DONE ON THE WHEELS. WE HAVE HAD THE WHEELS ON VEHICLE THAT DID NOT COME OFF INSPECTED AND CHECKED TO PROPER TORQUE FOLLOWING ALL INCIDENTS AND THEY HAVE BEEN TORQUED APPROPRIATELY. THE INCIDENT DATES WERE, 12/29/07 ,02/15/08, AND 07/17/08 . ON 12/29/07 AN EMPLOYEE WAS DRIVING UP A ROAD AT APPROXIMATELY 20 M.P.H. WHEN THE DRIVER SIDE BACK DUAL WHEELS CAME OFF DUE TO BROKEN LUG BOLTS. THIS WAS A NORMAL USE OF THE VEHICLE ON A WELL-MAINTAINED DIRT ROAD. ON 02/15/08 TWO EMPLOYEES WERE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 84 TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 60 M.P.H. WHEN THE REAR PASSENGER WHEELS CAME OFF THE VEHICLE AND PASSED THE VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY TRAVELING MILE. THE STUDS WERE ALSO SHEARED OFF IN THIS INSTANCE. THE INTERSTATE WAS IN GOOD CONDITION AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. IT WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT THE TIRES DID NOT STRIKE ANOTHER VEHICLE. ON 07/17/08 AN EMPLOYEE WAS DRIVING ON OREGON STATE HIGHWAY 82 AT APPROXIMATELY 55 M.P.H. WHEN THE DRIVER SIDE REAR WHEELS CAME OFF. THE WHEELS STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE DAMAGING THAT VEHICLE?S BRAKE SYSTEM. IN THIS CASE, A FATALITY COULD HAVE EASILY OCCURRED TO THE OTHER DRIVER. THERE WERE BLACK MARKS ON THE DRIVEWAY FROM THE TIRES. HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A FORD DEALER, THEY CHECKED IT AND TOLD ME THE SHIFT MOTOR AND GEM MODULE HAD TO BE REPLACED. ALSO TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A TSB ON THE PROBLEM. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT THAT MEANT. AFTER READING ABOUT THIS I FEEL THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT. MY EXTENDED WARRANTY WILL NOT COVER THIS AND THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY WILL NOT COVER THIS PROBLEM. THE FORD MOTOR CO. HAS SAID THAT THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM IN THE 99-2001 EXPEDITIONS AND F250 LD AND F-150 AND LINCOLN 99-2001 NAVIGATOR. THEY ALSO HAVE SAID WHAT THE NEW PART NUMBER THAT IT SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH. UPON TURNING MY DIRECTIONAL ON TO MAKE THE LEFT HAND TURN IT HESSITATED TO COME ON WHILE THE DIRECTIONAL STILL STAYED DOWN TO GO LEFT. AFTER ABOUT 10 SECONDS THE DIRECTIONAL CAME ON AND SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN AS WELL AS A STREAM OF SMOKE OUT OF THE HAZARD LIGHTS BUTTON ON THE STEERING COLUMN. I SHUT THE DIRECTIONAL OFF AND THE SMOKE STOPPED AND CLEARED AWAY. I PROCEEDED TO MY DESTINATION WHICH WAS ABOUT 100 YARDS AWAY NOT USING THE DIRECTIONAL AGAIN. I CALLED MY DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM AND THEY SAID IT SOUNDED LIKE THE "TURN SIGNAL SWITCH FRIED." BEING THAT THE DEALERSHIP WAS ONLY ABOUT 20 YARDS AWAY THEY CAME AND PICKED MY VEHICLE UP GIVING ME A LOANER VEHICLE TO USE. THEY TOLD ME THE PART HAD TO BE ORDERED AND THAT IT WAS GOING TO COST ABOUT $120.00 FOR THE PART AND LABOR. I HUNG UP WITH THEM AND WAS NOT HAPPY. THAT EVENING AFTER DISCUSSING THE MATTER WITH MY FATHER HE AND I FELT IT SHOULD NOT BE MY RESPONSIBLITY TO PAY THIS AMOUNT ON A DEFECTIVE PART THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS INJURY. THAT NEXT MORNING I PICK UP MY VEHICLE AND ASKED THE BILL TO BE BILLED AND MAILED TO MY DADS BUSINESS, HE OWNS A NAPA AUTO PARTS STORE. AFTER HAVING SHOWED MY FATHER THE BILL AND HE CALLED TWO OTHER FORD DEALERSHIPS, THAT HE KNOWS AND DOES BUSINESS WITH. HE TOLD THEM MY SITUATION AND THEY INFORMED US THAT IT IS A "COMMON PROBLEM" AND THAT THEY FIX THE PROBLEMS FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS AT NO EXPENSE TO THE CUSTOMER. AFTER FIGHTING TOOTH AND NAIL ALL DAY WITH MY DEALERSHIPS MANAGER AND PARTS MANAGER THE DEALERSHIPS MANAGER SAID HE WOULD THROW THE BILL OUT AND NOT CHARGE ME BECAUSE WE ARE GOOD CUSTOMERS. WHY WOULD TWO OTHER DEALERSHIPS PERFORM THIS AT NO COST AND MINE WANT TO CHARGE ME? MY FATHER HAS ALSO CONTACTED FORD AND SPOKE WITH A REPRESENTATIVE ABOUT THIS AND HE WAS GOING TO GET BACK TO US. OUR TRUCKS ARE VERY LOW MILEAGE, IMPECABLY MAINTAINED, THE TIRE PRESSURES ARE REGULARLY MONITORED AND ADJUSTED. THE FIRST FAILURE OCCURED (AT 10,150 MILES) WITH THE TRUCK LOADED. THE VEHICLE HAS A GVW OF 8600 LBS. THE TRUCK WAS SCALED WITH THE LOAD AT 7760 LBS GVW WELL UNDER THE VEHICLE AND TIRE WEIGHT CAPACITES. THE TREAD SHOWED SEPARATION AND THE SIDEWALL BLEW OUT. THE SECOND FAILURE OCCURRED (AT 10,330 MILES) WITH THE TRUCK EMPTY, AGAIN THE TREAD SHOWED SEPARATION AND THE SIDEWALL BLEW OUT.

ALTHOUGH NO ONE WAS HURT AND THE DEALER FIXED THE PROBLEM AT NO COST I WISH TO REPORT THIS INCIDENT AS A "NEAR MISS". THE PART IN QUESTION ,EXHAUST DAMPNER ASSY IS A BALANCER [7 TO10 POUND ROUND WEIGHT] ATTACHED TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM UNDER THE VEHICLE . THE WEIGHT IS WELDED TO A BRACKET WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM.
