The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that, per their records, the recall repair was completed in 2021. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2007 BMW X5. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact used force to pull over to the side of the road. The messages "Active Steering Inactive" and "Change of Steering Wheel and 4WD Malfunction" were displayed. The braking system warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the foot module had failed. The foot pedal was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer three times. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with an unknown failure. The cooling system was replaced. The contact related the failures to NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 13V045000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, SERVICE BRAKES) and 12E029000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000.

The failure had occurred on several occasions. No warning lights were illuminated. Unintended acceleration with loss of braking effectiveness. We hit a tree head on going at least 50 by the time we struck it. The vehicle was inspected before we bought it and we only bought it 3 days before the accident occurred. The check engine light came on that afternoon and we were going to get it checked out on Monday.

When purchased, it was discovered that the OE Passenger Side (Right) brake light/indicator housing of this vehicle had melted from the heat of the standard OE halogen brake bulb, causing the brake light to fall out of its placement in the housing. This results in the brake light indicator to emit little or no visible warning to other drivers, since the indicator bulb has fallen down outside of the casing. Because the indicator may not be visible to other drivers, it presents a hazard of others not being warned that I am braking and could result in drivers of other vehicles not being prepared to brake and therefore could result in a collision that can vary from minor fender bender to fatal collision. It could also result in a more devastating vehicle fire that could destroy more than just the indicator housing. It is visible and is reproduced every time vehicle brake pedal is depressed and brake indicators are engaged. Problem has been confirmed by BMW of South Austin. This specific vehicle has yet to be inspected by insurance, police, manufacturer or others, but is a known problem with these rear indicator housing assemblies that are present on both sides of the vehicle. No warning chimes or signals were present before, during, or after incident, and to this day, there are still no warning signals, signs, chimes, or indicators present.

SUNROOF DRAINS BOTH FRONT AND REAR HAVE DRAIN TUBES WHICH ARE PRONE TO KINK AND BACK UP WATER INTO THE SUNROOF TRAY, WHICH THEN SPILLS OVER ONTO THE TOPSIDE OF THE HEADLINER AND FROM THERE ONTO JUST ABOUT EVERY ELECTRONIC ITEM IN THE CAR INCLUDING AIR BAGS AND CONTROLLERS, LIGHTING CONTROLS, AND ELECTRICAL BOXES ON THE FLOOR AND TRUNK AREA. SOME HAVE REPORTED ARCS AND CAR FIRES DUE TO THE WATER DAMAGE; BMW SAYS IT IS A MAINTENANCE ISSUE ALTHOUGH HAS ZERO LISTED FOR SUNROOF MAINTENANCE, AND NO AMOUNT OF CLEANING IS GOING TO FIX THE SUNROOF DRAIN LINES THAT I FOUND TWISTED...LIKELY BEEN THAT WAY SINCE INITIAL ASSEMBLY, BUT ROUTING DOWN INSIDE THE APILLARS MAKES IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET TO TRY TO FIX IT, MUCH LESS SEE IT. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS DEFECT HASN'T INVOLVED NHTSA RECALL SINCE IT CAN VERY EASILY LEAD TO AN IN-USE ELECTRICAL FIRE AT WORST, OR AT BEST FAILURE OF AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY WHEN NEEDED DUE TO WATER/CORROSION ISSUES, AS WELL AS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN ELECTRICAL DAMAGE FOR EACH OCCURRENCE.

MY VEHICLE HAS THE COMMONLY AND POPULARLY KNOWN WEEP HOLE COOLANT LEAK. APPARENTLY, BMW HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM IN PREVIOUS YEAR MODEL CARS, DATING BACK TO 2002. THEY HAVE KNOWN THAT THIS WAS A FLAW IN THEIR DESIGN. HOWEVER, THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALLS ON THE REPAIR OF THIS ISSUE, WHICH COSTS OWNERS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR LABOR ALONE FOR A RATHER 'INEXPENSIVE' PART. IT WOULD ONLY BE FAIR FOR BMW TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS COMMONLY KNOWN ISSUE THAT SEEMS TO AFFECT HUNDREDS OF OWNERS OF BMWS WITH THE SAME ENGINES. THE COOLANT LEAKS ON THE FRONT SIDE OF THE ENGINE THROUGH A RANDOM HOLE AROUND THE ENGINE. IT IS A RATHER COSTLY FIX DUE TO SEVERAL COMPONENTS NEEDING TO BE REMOVED BEFORE ONE CAN GET TO THE BROKEN PART TO BE REPLACED. IT IS UNFAIR FOR CURRENT OWNERS TO HAVE TO PAY SIGNIFICANTLY FOR A CAR THAT HAS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW. VERY UNHAPPY WITH THIS CURRENT UNFORTUNATE DISCOVERY. ABS, 4X4, PARK, AWD, DSC,EBV. BRAKES SMOKING NOTICED, WHEN WE WERE ABLE TO STOP THE CAR. PARKING BRAKE WAS UNABLE TO BE RELEASE BY NORMAL PROCEDURES. GOT IT RELEASE LATER BY MANUAL RELEASE PROCEDURES IN ORDER TO MOVE THE CAR TO THE SHOP. BMW TECH FOUND PARKING BRAKE CONTROL UNIT PART NUMBER 34436850289 BAD AND WAS REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE DEALER COST PART $1200 PLUS $700 LABOR. PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED. I GLAD THAT THIS FAILURE WAS NOT A HIGH SPEED AND WE WERE ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR. OTHERWISE COULD BE FATALITIES. SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS PART. FORUMS SHOW SEVERAL PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL ISSUES WITH THIS RECALL, I ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 1.5 YEARS AND THIS IS THE THIRD RECALL! MY CURRENT MAIN CONCERN IS THERE IS A BURNING GAS LIKE OIL ODOR IN MY CAR. I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE SAYING REMEDY IS UNAVAILABLE! THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE MY LIFE AND MY CHILDREN LIFE IS IN DANGER. BMW SHOULD PROVIDE AN IMMEDIATE RESOLUTION!! WHEN I START THE CAR I SMELL BURNING SMELL AND SOMETIMES SEE SMOKE COME FROM HOOD OF CAR. I TOOK MY CAR TO BMW 2 MONTHS AGO FOR SERVICE AND WAS TOLD ALL WAS WELL WITH MY CAR. TWO OTHER RECALLS WERE CORRECTED HOWEVER, I STILL HAVE THE SAME GAS ODOR WHICH WAS DUE TO ANOTHER RECALL DEALING WITH THE FUEL TANK. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD DRIVING THIS CAR, AND ITS AN INSULT FOR BMW TO SEND A LETTER STATING THE ISSUE BUT STATE THERE IS NO REMEDY WHEN THE RECALL CONSEQUENCES CAN CAUSE A FIRE! I HAVE DISCOVERED A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH MY 2007 X5. I LIVE IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND AFTER A HEAVY RAIN, I NOTICED THAT THE TRUNK OF MY CAR WAS FILLED WITH WATER. I REMOVED 3.5 GALLONS OF WATER. I WENT TO START THE CAR BUT AS YOU CAN IMAGINE WITH THE BATTERY AND ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS BEING COVERED IN THAT MUCH WATER, IT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. ONCE I HAD REMOVED THE WATER AND LET IT DRY OUT I CHARGED THE BATTERY AND WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR. WHEN I GOT IT TO START, THE DASHBOARD LIT UP LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE. MY ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, BRAKE, CHECK ENGINE, 4X4 LIGHTS ALL LIT UP AMONGST SOME OTHER WARNING LIGHTS. I WAS UNABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE OR REVERSE AND HAD TO MANUALLY PUSH IT IN THE GARAGE. THE CAR IS STUCK IN A LIMP MODE/SAFE MODE. AFTER I HAD DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THE ISSUE I DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM FOR BMW'S. I LEARNED THAT THERE WAS A US DISTRICT COURT RULING AGAINST THIS ISSUE AND THAT BMW 5 SERIES CARS BETWEEN 2004-2010 WERE COVERED IN A RECALL. THE RECALL IS DUE TO FAULTY WATER DRAIN TUBES COMING FROM THE SUNROOF AND WHEN THEY GET CLOGGED THE WATER DRAINS INTO THE TRUNK WHERE THE BATTERY IS LOCATED AMONGST OTHER IMPORTANT ELECTRONIC ELEMENTS. I HAVE CONTACTED MY LOCAL BMW DEALER AS WELL AS BMW OF NORTH AMERICA AND ALTHOUGH THEY ARE QUITE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO FOR ME AS THE RECALL PERTAINS ONLY TO THE 5 SERIES VEHICLES. IT'S FRUSTRATING THAT BMW IS WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT BECAUSE THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT SPECIFIES ONLY 5 SERIES CARS THEY CAN USE THAT AS A LOOPHOLE AND LEAVE OTHERS TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS.

WHEN THE ERROR OCCURS WITH GAS PEDAL DEPRESSED, CAR WILL HESITATE BY GOING INTO NEUTRAL AND JUMPING BACK INTO DRIVE ACCOMPANIED BY ENGINE REVVING UP TO ABOVE 3000 RPM. WHEN THE ERROR OCCURS AND THE GAS IS NOT DEPRESSED, CAR WILL GO INTO NEUTRAL AND COAST, UNTIL I ENGAGE THE TRANSMISSION. IF THE CAR IS TRAVELING LESS THAN 5 MPH AND THE ERROR OCCURS, THEN THE CAR JERKS TO A HALT AND THE TRANSMISSION IS SWITCHED INTO PARK AUTOMATICALLY. THIS TYPICALLY HAPPENED IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. I DIDN'T HAVE THE 2,000 DOLLARS TO GET IT FIXED. A FEW MONTHS LATER AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF HEAVY RAIN I'VE NOTICED THE DRIVERS FLOOR SOAKED THEN THE CAR WAS HESITANT TO START. THE CAR OVER ANOTHER FEW MONTHS MY WIPERS WOULD CUT ON BY THEMSELVES AND I COULDN'T CUT THEM OFF. IT WAS THE NIGHT OF INDEPENDENCE DAY 2012, IT HAD RAINED MODERATELY HARD EARLIER IN THE DAY. WHEN I STARTED MY 2007 BMW X5 3.0SI TO DRIVE HOME, I WAS GREETED WITH A BUNCH OF WARNINGS AND ERRORS ON BOTH MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND NAVIGATION DISPLAY. THE MOST MAJOR ONE READ "ELECTRONIC SYSTEM MALFUNCTION: TAKE TO NEAREST BMW CENTER." THE ABS LIGHT WAS ALSO LIT UP. SINCE IT WAS LATE AT NIGHT, THE DEALERSHIP WAS CLOSED AND SO I PROCEEDED TO TRY TO DRIVE HOME. ON THE DRIVE HOME, I NOTICED THAT MY A/C SYSTEM SHUT ITSELF OFF AND THAT MY TURN SIGNALS WERE EXTREMELY LAGGY & AT TIMES, WERE NOT EVEN TURNING ON ' A REAL TRAFFIC HAZARD. FORTUNATELY, I MADE IT HOME, BUT TURNING THE CAR OFF WAS TRICKY BECAUSE EACH TIME, ODDLY, THE LIGHTS INSIDE THE CAR AND AMBIENT LIGHTING ON DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CAR WERE STILL LIT EVEN WHEN I REMOVED THE KEYFOB AND LOCKED THE CAR. EXAMPLES INCLUDE THE RADIO UNIT, THE ENGINE START BUTTON. THE NEXT MORNING, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE BMW DEALERSHIP AND THEY CHARGED ME $200+ JUST TO PERFORM DIAGNOSTICS ON THE CAR. THEY ENDED UP FINDING NOTHING AND SUGGESTED THAT I PAY MORE FOR THEM TO TAKE OFF THE TWO FRONT SEATS AND INSPECT THE WIRES UNDER THE CARPET IN THE FRONT OF THE CAR (I FOUND OUT THAT THIS BECAUSE THEY KNEW ABOUT NHTSA ITEM #: 10032845 / SERVICE BULLETIN # SIB-61-13-07). I DECLINED BECAUSE I DID NOT WANT TO SPEND ANY MORE MONEY ALL FOR THEM TO NOT BE ABLE TO FIND ANYTHING AGAIN. THE TRANSMISSION MECHATRONIC SEALING SLEEVE LEAKED FLUID AND LEFT PUDDLE OF OIL/FLUID ON MY GARAGE FLOOR. THE EARLY DIAGNOSIS SHOWED ENGINE OIL LEAK AND EVENTUALLY CONCLUDED IT WAS TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK RECENTLY, WHILE THE VEHICLE LEAKED THE FLUID DURING A LONG PERIOD OF TIME THAT WE DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH IT LEAKED ALREADY. THE TRANSMISSION IS A SEALED UNIT AND OWNER HAS NO WAY TO CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL VIA A DIPSTICK OR ANY MEAN. THE AUTOMATIC SENSOR SYSTEM ONLY CHECKS ENGINE OIL, BRAKE FLUID, POWER STEERING FLUID, ETC BUT NOT REPORTS TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL. SO, THERE IS NO WAY ANY BMW OWNER WOULD KNOW IF THE TRANSMISSION FLUID IS LOW OR TOTALLY EMPTY. THIS WOULD POST SAFETY ISSUE IF A VEHICLE BREAKS DOWN IN A MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC DUE TO TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK PROBLEM WITHOUT ANY WARNING SIGN. FURTHERMORE, BMW HAS PUBLISHED A TECHNICAL SERVICE INFORMATION "SI B 24 08 06" DATED MARCH 2010 FOR THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM. BMW DID NOT NOTIFY OWNER TO CHECK THE VEHICLE FOR SIGN OF TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK, NOR ASKED DEALER TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE DURING SERVICE VISITS. AS A MATTER OF FACT, MY 2007 X5 HAS NEVER BEEN INSPECTED FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT IT CLEARLY HAD THIS PROBLEM! CONSIDERING IT IS A LOW MILEAGE VEHICLE, THIS PROBLEM SHOULD NOT EXIST NORMALLY. ON 13 JULY, 2011, WITH ONLY 56,201 MILES, OUR BMW X5 SUFFERED WHAT AN INDEPENDENT BMW AUTO REPAIR SHOP LATER DIAGNOSED AS A "TOTAL ELECTRICAL MELTDOWN INVOLVING ALMOST ALL POWERTRAIN COMPONENTS AND DATA BUS SYSTEM." *TT SYMPTOMS UPON STARTUP THAT MORNING INCLUDED A LEVEL CONTROL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION LIGHT, A TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION WARNING, A PARKING BRAKE MALFUNCTION WARNING, A PASSENGER RESTRAINT MALFUNCTION WARNING, AN ALL-WHEEL DRIVE, DSC, ABS, AND EMERGENCY ABV MALFUNCTION WARNING, AS WELL AS RAPID WINDSHIELD WIPER MOVEMENT AND AN INTERMITTENT ENGINE START BUTTON. I AM AN OFFICER IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY, ON ACTIVE DUTY, AND I DEPLOYED THAT MORNING FOR ALMOST SIX WEEKS; I HAVE RECENTLY RETURNED. THE BURDEN OF COORDINATING AN AUTOMOBILE TOW AND REPAIR THAT DAY WAS LEFT TO MY WIFE, THE MOTHER OF OUR TWO YOUNG CHILDREN. TO SAY THAT THIS WAS AN INCONVENIENCE TO HER IS A GROSS UNDERSTATEMENT. WE PURCHASED THE BMW BASED ON ITS PREVIOUS REPUTATION FOR QUALITY, AND WE PAID MUCH MORE FOR THIS VEHICLE THAN WE WOULD HAVE FOR SOMETHING LIKE A HONDA ODYSSEY OR A TOYOTA SIENNA. WE WERE WILLING TO PAY MORE WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT, DURING MY LONG AND FREQUENT ABSENCES IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY, MY WIFE AND FAMILY WOULD HAVE A RELIABLE AND SAFE VEHICLE. I FEEL THIS DECISION TO PURCHASE THIS BMW PRODUCT WAS A MISTAKE, AND ONE I NEVER INTEND TO REPEAT. THE VEHICLE WAS ONLY 6,000 MILES OUTSIDE OF THE 50,000 MILE WARRANTY, AND YET NONE OF THE $1,781.31 INVOICE WAS COVERED BY BMW; IT WAS COVERED SOLELY BY MY SAVINGS. IN JULY 2007 I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW, FULLY LOADED 2007 BMW X5 4.8. BACK THEN, IT WAS MY DREAM CAR. NOW, IT IS A NIGHTMARE. FROM THE BEGINNING, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED DIFFERENT MINOR ISSUES WITH THE CAR (DVD PLAYER NOT WORKING, FOR EXAMPLE) THAT THE DEALERSHIP FIXED. HOWEVER, ONCE WE STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR NOT STARTING, THAT WAS NO LONGER A "MINOR" ISSUE. THE FIRST TIME THE CAR DID NOT START WAS AROUND THANKSGIVING IN 2008, ONLY A LITTLE MORE THAN A YEAR AFTER I HAD PURCHASE MY CAR. BY THE SUMMER OF 2009, THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE AND HALF THE TIME THE CAR WOULD NOT START. WE FINALLY TOOK THE CAR IN (NOV 2009) AND THE DEALERSHIP TOLD US THE BATTERY WAS DEATH, AND THEY REPLACED THE BATTERY AT NO CHARGE (WARRANTY). EVERYTHING WAS FINE UNTIL MARCH 26, 2011, WHEN I WAS READY TO LEAVE AND MY CAR DID NOT START. AT THIS POINT, I WAS SO FRUSTRATED THAT I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM I DID NOT WANT A CAR THAT DOESN'T WORK PARKED IN MY GARAGE, SO I WAS GOING TO DROP IT OFF. IT WAS A SATURDAY, SO I DID NOT HEAR BACK FROM THE DEALERSHIP UNTIL THE FOLLOWING MONDAY, ONLY TO TELL ME THAT THE BATTERY WAS VERY LOW AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT IT WAS BECAUSE OF MY DRIVING HABITS, BECAUSE MOST OF MY TRIPS ARE VERY SHORT (LESS THAN 5 MI) TRIPS. I ASKED THEM IF I NEEDED TO CHANGE MY DRIVING HABITS IN ORDER FOR MY CAR TO WORK, AND THEY SAID "HMM, YEAH". REALLY??? TO TOP IT OFF, SINCE THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED DUE TO MY "DRIVING HABITS", I NEEDED TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE BATTERY. I BELIEVE THE DESIGN OF THE OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM HAS PROBLEMS. THE VEHICLE STARTED TO FOG UP AND FELT AS IF THERE WERE NO AIR CIRCULATING INSIDE THE VEHICLE. I WAS PARKED IN AN AREA WHICH WAS NOT WELL LIGHTED AND IT WAS DARK AND RAINING OUTSIDE. WITH A DARK INTERIOR AND NO LIGHTS WORKING INSIDE THE VEHICLE, I WASNT ABLE TO SEE FIND THE MANUALLY UNLOCK IN THE BACK TRUNK AREA. ABOUT 8-10 MINUTES IN TO THIS TERRIBLE ORDEAL, THE DOORS UNLOCKED AUTOMATICALLY. BMW SERVICE REPLACED THE BATTERY AND WASNT ABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM.THIS IS VERY CONCERNING AS MY FAMILY CAN BE TRAPPED INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND BMW WASNT ABLE TO FIND ANY ISSUE. IF THE BATTERY DIES AGAIN, WE MAY NOT BE AS FORTUNATE NEXT TIME. I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH BMW NORTH AMERICA. THIS NEEDS TO BE FURTHER INVESTIGATED AS OTHERS MAY NOT BE AS FORTUNATE DUE TO BMW POOR/IMPROPER DESIGN.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW X5. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD AND HAD IT TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE REAR AXLE, REAR DIFFERENTIAL WERE DEFECTIVE AND THE TRANSMISSION LEAKED FLUID. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 93,000.

WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A DEAD STOP, THE CAR DOES NOTHING WHEN YOU STEP ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THEN LUNGES FORWARD. THE SUDDEN BUCKING AND HESITATION MAKES HARD TO CONTROL THE CAR ESPECIALLY IN BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC. I LIVE IN A SUBURB OF NEW YORK CITY AND I DRIVE IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC AT 5 TIMES EVERY WEEK. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN EVERY TIME YOU ACCELERATE, BUT MOSTLY WHEN THE CAR IS HOT, LIKE IN TRAFFIC. THE CAR PERFORMS FINE WHEN IT IS COLD. THE DEALER HAS EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM, AND THE CAR HAS IMPROVED, BUT IT IS STILL BAD WHEN IT GETS HOT. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER'S REPRESENTATIVE REFUSE TO DO MORE THAN DRIVE IT AROUND THE BLOCK AND THE LAST TIME IT WAS THERE THEY DROVE IT WHILE IT WAS COLD AND IT WAS OK. I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THEM SIX (6) TIMES AND THEY STILL CAN NOT FIX THIS. I THINK THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. IN MAY 2007, I PURCHASED A NEW BMW 2007 X5 4.8 VEHICLE. SINCE THEN, I HAVE EXPERIENCED "HIGH BATTERY DRAINAGE" WARNINGS AT LEAST 12 TIMES. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THE COMPUTER DOESN'T SHOW A HISTORY OF THIS MESSAGE AND IT DOES NOT FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE BATTERY. THE CAR ENGINE ALSO FAILS TO START AFTER REPEATED ATTEMPTS- THE LIGHTS, RADIO AND AIR TURN ON, BUT THE ENGINE DOES NOT. AFTER SEVERAL HOURS, THE ENGINE STARTS. THIS HAS OCCURRED AT LEAST 12 TIMES SINCE 11/2007 AS WELL- BUT INDEPENDENTLY OF THE "HIGH BATTERY DRAINAGE" WARNING. THE DEALERSHIP FAILS TO FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE STARTING WHEN I TAKE THE CAR IN. IN ADDITION, THE ENGINE (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) STAYS LOCKED IN ONE GEAR AND THE ENGINE REVS UP WHILE DRIVING, FAILING TO AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT TO THE NEXT GEAR UNLESS THE DRIVER RELEASES THE GAS PEDAL OR PUSHES THE GAS PEDDLE TO "THROW IT" INTO THE NEXT GEAR. IT WOULD ALSO LURCH ON INCLINES, BUT STOPPED EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM (PERHAPS COINCIDENTALLY) WHEN I REMOVED MY CELLPHONE FROM THE CAR'S BLUETOOTH/HANDS-FREE SYSTEM. THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN SAID THAT IT COULD NOT DETECT ANY PROBLEMS. BMW USA IS NO HELP EITHER, SINCE THEY RELY ON THE DEALERSHIPS TO REPORT ISSUES TO THEM. IF THE LOCAL DEALERS AREN'T REPORTING THE ISSUES THAT OWNERS EXPERIENCE SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY CAN'T FIND AN ANSWER, THEN NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THE OWNERS AND THEIR PASSENGERS DRIVING THEIR VEHICLES. I BELIEVE A PROBLEM EXISTS WITH THE ELECTRONIC SYSTEM AND PERHAPS SOMETHING ELSE. THERE WAS AN UNINTENDED INCREASE IN ACCELERATION. THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SLOW DOWN WHEN PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE GEAR WAS SHIFTED INTO THE "NEUTRAL" POSITION. THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A TRAFFIC SIGNAL POLE. THE AIR BAG SYSTEM FAILED TO DEPLOY WITH THE LEVEL OF IMPACT. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED SEVERE INJURIES. THE POLICE WAS CALLED TO THE SCENE. THERE WERE BODY DAMAGES TO THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A COLLISION CENTER. THE CAUSE OF FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED AT THIS TIME. NOT PRECISELY SURE WHAT IS CAUSING THIS ELECTRICAL PROBLEM, BUT ALL 3 OCCURRENCES OF THIS PROBLEM HAVE HAPPENED AFTER I WASHED THE VEHICLE AND DID NOT DRIVE IT. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS MALFUNCTIONING TO THE POINT IT COMPLETELY DRAINS THE VEHICLE'S BATTERY. AFTER THE SECOND TIME I WENT TO START THE VEHICLE, I HAD THE BATTERY REPLACED. THE 3RD TIME, ALL OF THE VEHICLE EXTERIOR LIGHTS HAD TURNED THEMSELVES ON DURING THE COURSE OF THE NIGHT, AND HAD ALMOST FULLY DISCHARGED THE BATTERY. I PURCHASED A NEW 2007 BMW X5 IN DECEMBER 2006. DURING THE TIME I HAVE OWNED THE CAR I HAVE HAD IT IN FOR SERVICE PROBLEMS 18 TIMES. SIX OF THOSE TIMES IS FOR "HIGH BATTERY DRAIN". THE CONSEQUENCE IS A CAR THAT MIGHT NOT ALWAYS START. AFTER THREE UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPTS TO FIX THE BATTERY DRAIN PROBLEM THEY REPLACED THE BATTERY ON THE FOURTH ATTEMPT. SINCE THE BATTERY HAS BEEN REPLACED I HAVE HAD THE CAR IN TWO MORE TIMES WITH THE SAME BATTERY DRAIN PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP IS NOW TELLING ME I HAVE BATTERY PROBLEMS BECAUSE I DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR ENOUGH. BMW RECOMMENDS YOU DRIVE THE CAR AT LEAST 7,500 MILES PER YEAR FOR PROPER BATTERY OPERATION. I HAVE DRIVEN MY CAR 12,000 A YEAR, EXCEEDING WHAT THEY RECOMMEND. I HAVE ALSO HAD THIS VEHICLE IN FOUR TIMES TO FIX A DMTL PUMP PROBLEM. BMW NORTH AMERICA SUGGESTED THAT THE BATTERY DRAIN HAS ALSO CAUSED THE DMTL PUMP NOT TO OPERATE PROPERLY. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE DMTL PUMP PROBLEM WAS A RESULT OF A LOOSE CONNECTION, THEN A GAS CAP LEAK, THEN THE VENT VALVE STICKING OPEN AND LASTLY SAID ON THE FOURTH ATTEMPT TO FIX IT THAT THE DMTL PUMP JUST DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY AND REPLACED IT. WHAT IS IT??? I DO NOT RECEIVE THE SAME ANSWERS FROM BMW NORTH AMERICA VERSUS THE DEALERSHIP. I ALSO INVESTIGATED A WEB FORUM PERTAINING TO THIS ISSUE AND FOUND DOZENS OF OTHER BMW OWNERS WITH THE SAME "HIGH BATTERY DRAIN" PROBLEM.
