I am reporting a vehicle fire involving my 2008 BMW X3, which had an active safety recall for the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve heater (Recall Campaign No. 22V-119). This recall identifies a risk of short circuiting, overheating, and potential fire. On February 27, 2026, I contacted BMW after discovering multiple active recalls on my vehicle. I specifically asked whether the vehicle was safe to drive. After consulting internally, I was advised that I did not need a tow and that the vehicle was safe to drive. Based on this guidance, I scheduled a repair appointment for March 24, 2026. On March 14, 2026, before starting the vehicle, I noticed a very faint smell of burning plastic, which I reasonably believed was coming from a nearby source and not from my vehicle. After starting the vehicle and driving approximately 2–3 blocks, the smell rapidly intensified and began filling the interior. Multiple dashboard warning lights illuminated, and the vehicle lost acceleration almost immediately. I safely pulled the vehicle off the road, turned it off, and opened the hood, at which point I observed smoke and active fire originating from the rear/center area of the engine compartment. I immediately called 911, and the Central Mat-Su Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. The vehicle sustained extensive fire damage and has been deemed a total loss. I am concerned that despite a known recall involving fire risk, I was advised that the vehicle was safe to drive, which may have contributed to this incident. There were no indicators of any problems prior to driving it and the dashboard only lit up seconds before the vehicle stopped moving and caught fire. It has not been inspected by anyone but I have it covered on my property to preserve the evidence. I am waiting to receive the fire department report and can provide that once it’s available.

The contact stated that upon touching the seat, the contact noticed that the seat heater had burned the seat through the seat leather cover. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road immediately, and the contact turned off the seat heater. The contact noticed that the seat burn hole was the size of a cigarette hole, and there was a burn mark on the contact's pants. The contact stated that the burning sensation he had sustained did not require medical assistance. The contact was able to continue driving. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact noticed that the tread of the tires became inoperable. The contact stated that the vehicle became difficult to control. The contact parked the vehicle and inspected all the tires and the contact noticed that the inside of all the tires tread had separated. The vehicle was taken to an independent where it was diagnosed that the tires failed due to the tires being delaminated, and the tires needed to be replaced. The tires were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The tire failure mileage was 500. The vehicle failure mileage was 325,000.

When towing it to a BMW dealership, they informed me that there is a problem with the VANOS bolts and that "they snap easily"; however after some research into it I realized that these engines have a recall for this specific issue only that my vehicle isn't listed under the recall. I believe this is a mistake and that it should be.

The wiring insulation inside of the headlight on my vehicle deteriorated, causing the wires to be exposed. The headlight stopped working because of the wires touching, and a defective lamp dash light came on. Exposed wires touching has the potential to start fires. I have completely re wrapped all of the wiring inside of the headlights with heat shrink so I no longer have the problem, although the problem first appeared after I tried replacing the light bulb

The steering angle sensor has faulted, at around 60,000 miles. This fault results in possible airbag failure, in conjunction with inability to perform safety breaking mechanisms, as well as disabling the cars 4x4 stability control features. BMW as well as other BMW third-party mechanics have told me this is a reoccurring problem and could pose a serious danger if in an accident. BMW officially told me to put a complaint in so that a recall could be performed. I will not pay 2000 for my airbags to work, as it is a feature required by law to operate properly. I will upload all necessary documentation if needed, should this complaint be taken into consideration.

I was driving my car and the car overheated due to a faulty pcv valve heater: 1.The purpose of the PCV heater is to prevent the PCV valve from freezing in cold ambient temperatures. Heated PCV valves are heated either by water or electric. Water heated systems use engine coolant to heat the valve to prevent freezing. Electrically heated systems use a heating element enclosed in the PCV valve to prevent the valve from freezing. The problem with the 2008 BMW X3 transmission is going to get someone KILLED!! This transmission DOES NOT RESPOND when depressing the accelerator at random times & HAS DONE THIS SINCE THE DAY I BOUGHT IT. it happened once after pulling away from an ezpass booth - the car just froze and would not accelerate nearly causing an accident. Now it has caused an accident. I am working with a journalist at CNBC to get info about this death trap out since NHTSA is ignoring the issue completely. People are telling you their family members are injured and/or dying because 2008 BMW X3’s simply loose power at 70mph and transmission issues that make this care not accelerate, jerk, stall, etc. I have been helping contact other owners in an effort to see if they have any unreported issues and many say their complaints were also ignored. when you try to accelerate, the transmission "thinks" about what gear it should be in. the vehicle hesitates, stalls slightly, and creeps along slowly before second gear catches. the rpms are erratic when accelerating. very unpredictable when trying to accelerate. the hesitation is the main issue, especially when trying to pull out of an intersection across traffic. it can become a very scary situation when you want to accelerate and nothing happens. this is an ongoing problem. nothing in particular causes it to happen besides regular acceleration. the problem is intermittent and may disappear while driving. however, it will appear again for no real reason. a software update was performed in mid-july. the problem was still noticeable. on august 3rd, the vehicle was once again brought in for service work. the service manager came along for the drive and noticed the transmission problem. another 2008 bmw x3 that was on the lot was driven under the same driving conditions. the same issues with the transmission were noted. he told me that they will contact bmw to see if there are any service bulletins on how to correct the problem, but was unaware of any fix currently available. after two service calls the problem still persists without any fix as of yet.

ON DECEMBER 19, 2020 WHILE DRIVING WITH MY DRIVER'S SEAT HEATER ON WARMING MY SEAT DUE TO COLD WEATHER, I WAS ON MY WAY TO PICK UP MEDICATION AT THE PHARMACY WHEN I NOTICED A SHARP STING AND BURNING SENSATION ON MY LOWER RIGHT SIDE. I LOOKED DOWN AND NOTICED MY COAT ON FIRE. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. I GOT OUT, FRANTICALLY PATTED MY COAT THAT WAS BURNING, AND LOOKED AT MY SEAT TO SEE IF THERE WAS A FIRE AND THERE WAS A HOLE WHERE THE HEATER HAD BURNED COMPLETELY THRU THE LEATHER SEAT. I GOT BACK IN, DIDN'T TURN THE HEATER ON, AND WHEN I ARRIVED HOME I DIDN'T DRIVE UNTIL THAT MONDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2020 I DROVE TO MY LOCAL BMW DEALERSHIP THAT REGULARLY SERVICES MY VEHICLE AND EXPLAINED WHAT HAPPENED AND ASKED IF THERE WAS A KNOWN RECALL OR ISSUES. HE EXPLAINED IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE HEATER SYSTEM IN THE SEATS FAILING AND CAUSING DAMAGE BUT CURRENTLY NO RECALLS FOR THE ISSUE. I ASKED HOW COULD THAT BE WITH THE DANGER INVOLVED? I EXPLAINED IT COULD HAVE BEEN TRAGICALLY WORSE IF I HAD CAUGHT FIRE AND COULDN'T GET IT OUT. I WAS LUCKY I FELT IT QUICKLY AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE. CHRIS AT CAIN BMW, NORTH CANTON, OHIO INSPECTED MU VEHICLE AND GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF $1,495.00 TO REPLACE THE PART OF MY SEAT AFFECTED WITH A NEW HEATING SYSTEM AND REPAIR. I FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL DUE TO THE MANUFACTURER ALREADY KNOWING THERE'S AN ISSUE. I JUST WANT THEM TO RECALL VEHICLES THEY KNOW ARE AFFECTED AND REPAIR. OR AT LEAST VOLUNTARILY REPAIR VEHICLES THAT REPORT THE ISSUE. AFTER TURNING ON THE DRIVER'S SEAT HEATER, IT DEFAULTS TO HIGH, THE LEFT SIDE SEAT BOLSTER STARTED TO SMOKE. A FEW SECONDS LATER BEFORE MY WIFE REALIZED WHAT WAS HAPPENING SHE FELT HER LEFT ARM AND SIDE GETTING A LOT HOTTER THAN THE REST OF HER SEAT. BMW SENT AN INSPECTOR TO CHECK THE DAMAGE AND TOOK HUNDREDS OF PICTURES. CLEARLY THE FIRE STARTED UNDER THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT AREA AND CONTINUED TO BURN UNTIL THE FRONT OF THE CAR, WINDSHIELD AND INTERIOR WAS DESTROYED. CONTENTS IN MY SHOP WERE DESTROYED AND THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING HAD TO BE GUTTED TO THE STUDS. BMW OFFERED NOTHING. DAMAGES TOTALLED MORE THAN $150,000. THE PLASTIC SHEATHING (CABLE JACKET) HAS BECOME BRITTLE FROM THE HEAT, AND IS FALLING APART, EXPOSING THE CONDUCTOR. THIS IS CREATING THE RISK OF AN ELECTRICAL FIRE OR DAMAGE TO THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM FIXED. WAS ADVISED THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE AUTHORIZATION FROM THE NATIONAL OFFICE TO PERFORM THE REPAIRS. WHEN QUESTIONED ABOUT HAVING THE PARTS THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ADMITTED THAT THEY COULD GET THE PARTS BUT WOULD NOT BE REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIR BECAUSE THE NATIONAL OFFICE HAD NOT AUTHORIZED THEIR USE. REPEATEDLY CHECK WITH THEM OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS. RECEIVED THE SAME ANSWER AGAIN AND AGAIN. CONTACTED BMW USA DIRECTLY THROUGH THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SPOKE WITH THEIR REPRESENTATIVE WHO STATED THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE THE PARTS TO REPAIR THE KNOWN SAFETY ISSUES AND WERE HOPING TO HAVE THEM FIXED LATER THIS YEAR. RECENTLY I GOT A LETTER FROM BMW THAT MY VEHICLE WAS RECALLED FOR TWO ISSUES WHICH I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING SINCE A YEAR. 1 OVERHEATING 2. PLASTIC BURNING SMELL INSIDE THE COMPARTMENT. I BROUGHT THIS TO THEIR BMW'S NOTICE MANY TIMES WHICH THEY IGNORED. AND RECENTLY WHEN I GOT THIS RECALL LETTER FROM BMW I GAVE THEM A CALL(PRINCETON BMW), THEY GAVE ME AN APPOINTMENT SAYING THEY WILL FIX THAT. I TOLD THEM CRYSTAL CLEARLY THAT I WAS THERE FOR THE TWO RECALL ISSUES ONLY AND NOTHING ELSE. AND TO MY SHOCK ,LET ALONE REPAIRING THE MANDATORY RECALL ISSUES, THEY GAVE A BIG LIST OF OTHER THINGS, WHICH I DID NOT EVEN ASK FOR, AND THEY CHARGED ME AROUND 170 DOLLARS(ATTACHED COPIES). I AM BRINGING THIS TO YOUR NOTICE FOR SOLELY ONE REASON, AND THAT IS THERE ARE MILLIONS OF UNSUSPECTING PEOPLE WHO ARE UNAWARE OF THIS MALPRACTICE WHO WILL BE FALLING INTO THIS KIND OF TRAP. THE RESULT FROM IT SITTING FOR SO LONG HAS RUSTED MY PERFECTLY MAINTAINED BRAKES AND ROTORS TO BE NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AND MY HOOD IS FROZEN SHUT WITH POSSIBILITY OF FLYING OFF AND KILLING SOMEONE. DRIVING ON A FLAT PAVED ROAD AND HEAR TWO MENTAL PING SOUNDS ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE.I PULLED OVER TO CHECK THE VEHICLE, AND COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING. I PULLED OUT AND WHEN I TURNED THERE WAS A LOUD VIBRATION. THIS HAPPENED WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT FROM A STOP. WHEN FURTHER INSPECTED YOU COULD SEE THE MOTOR WAS HANGING AT AN ANGLE. THE FOUR BOLTS ON THE ENGINE MOUNT BRACKET HAD BROKEN OFF CAUSING THE ENGINE TO HANG DOWN. AFTER INSPECTING THE PARTS YOU COULD SEE BY THE DISCOLORATION OF TWO BOLTS THAT THEY HAD BEEN BROKEN FOR SOMETIME . THERE IS NO WAY OF KNOWING WHEN THE FIRST ONE BROKE OR HOW LONG IT TOOK THE LAST TWO TO BREAK .THIS COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS PROBLEM TO THE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE. CURRENTLY I HAVE THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP IN MY 335I (2008). I HAVE MY "SERVICE ENGINE SOON ENGINE MALFUNCTION. REDUCED POWER" LIGHT ON - IT JUST CAME ON YESTERDAY. ORIGINAL WARRANTY WAS 4 YEARS 40,000 MILES. WHICH ACCORDING TO BMW WAS EXTENDED 10 YEARS 120,000. SO I AM OUT OF WARRANTY BECAUSE I ALREADY HAVE 130K, MY CAR WAS BROUGHT TO BMW SEVERAL OCCASION, IT WAS NEVER BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THERE MAY A POTENTIAL PROBLEMS WITH THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP.

I EXPERIENCED A BREAK DOWN WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET. MY CAR WAS THEN TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALER AND DEALER DISCOVERED WATER PUMP WAS BAD SO IT WAS THEN REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. 3 YEARS LATER MY CAR BROKE DOWN AGAIN AND WAS TOWED TO LOCAL DEALER AN AGAIN THE WATER PUMP WAS DETERMINED BAD AND REPLACED. I CONTACTED BMW NORTH AMERICA TO SEE IF THEY WOULD HELP CONSIDERING THE WATER PUMP HAS BROKEN TWICE BUT NO HELP FROM THEM.

VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. I WAS CHANGING A FUSE AND WAS LEANING OVER FROM THE DRIVER SEAT ON TO THE PASSENGER SEAT. AFTER CHANGING THE FUSE, I STARTED THE CAR AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED. UPON DRIVING THE CAR LATER WITH MY WIFE, I NOTICED THAT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED AS WELL. I THEN HAD THE CODE DIAGNOSED AND IT INDICATED A MALFUNCTIONING PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR. I HAVE SPORT COMFORT SEATS IN MY CAR.

WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE VEHICLE OUT OF GAS STATION PARKING LOT. LIGHTS WENT AWAY BUT INTERMITTENTLY WOULD COME ON WHILE DRIVING WHICH CAUSED SUDDEN INABILITY TO ACCELERATE WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. VEHICLE FEELS LIKE IT CANNOT SWITCH AND GEAR AND IS BEING PUSHED BACK.WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE RESR LIGHTS STOP WORKING SO DRIVERS BEHIND COULD CRASH INTO ME BECAUSE OF SUDDEN DECREASE IN SPEED.TOOK TO DEALER SEPTEMBER 22. CAR WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY, DROVE IT EARLIER THAT DAY FOR ABOUT AN HOUR, PARKED IT 3PM AND 2 HOURS LATER NEIGHBOR CAME KNOCKING SAYING CAR WAS SMOKING. RAN OUTSIDE AND CAR WAS ON FIRE. INTERIOR WAS SMOKED OUT. KEYLESS ENTRY WAS DEAD. BROKE THE WINDOW TO GET THE CAR OPEN, TURNED THE GARDEN HOSE ON TO TRY AND STOP THE CAR FROM BURNING. CALLED 911 FIRE DEPT ARRIVED AND HAD TO PRY THE TRUCK OPEN BECAUSE IT WAS STILL SIZZLING. FIRE DEPT CUT THE BATTERY CABLES AND SAID IT LOOKED LIKE AN ELECTRICAL FIRE UNDER THE DASH. GLOVE BOX AND PASSENGER SIDE FRONT SEAT WAS COMPLETELY CHARRED. AFTER 22 DAYS, A BMW ENGINEER AND ALLSTATE INS CALLED IT A TOTAL LOSS. BMW ENGINEERS REPORT STILL HAS NOT BEEN PUBLISHED. TOTAL LOSS ON A PARKED VEHICLE; CLEARLY THIS VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE AND A DESIGN FAULT. MANUFACTURERS ARE SUPPOSE TO ENGINEER CARS TO WITHSTAND FIRES.

I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AROUND 60 MPH SPEED AND SUDDENLY MY CAR COULDN'T SPEED ANY FURTHER AND LUCKY FOR ME I WAS DRIVING NEXT TO CENTER DIVIDE AND COULD PULL IT, I WAS ABLE TO AVOID ANY ACCIDENT. IT WAS PEAK TRAFFIC TIME ( EARLY MORNING COMMUTE ). SO I BELIEVE THIS NEEDS TO LOOKED INTO THAT IF THERE WAS A RECALL WHICH WAS NOT APPLIED TO ALL THE MAKE, MODELS. AFTER DIAGNOSIS IT WAS FOUND THE ISSUE WAS WITH FUEL PUMP ON WHICH THERE ARE CERTAIN RECALLS ON THE NEWER MODELS BUT FOR 2008 MODEL THEY WAS NONE I CONFIRMED WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE.

MY BMW HAD BEEN HAVING A ROARING, VIBRATING NOISE IN IT. THEN IT STARTED RUNNING HOT. I PARKED IN MY GARAGE ONLY TO FIND WATER AND ANTIFREEZE ALL OVER THE GARAGE FLOOR. WHEN I TOOK IT TO GET IT FIXED, THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THE BOLTS WHICH HOLD THE ENGINE MOUNTS UP ON THE PASSENGER SIDE HAD BROKEN AND THE ENGINE WAS SITTING SIDEWAYS AND HAD DROPPED DOWN AND CRUSHED THE WATER PUMP AND COOLANT RESERVOIR. THE BOLTS ARE NOT SUBSTANTIAL ENOUGH TO SUPPORT THE ENGINE. THEY ARE VERY LIGHTWEIGHT METAL (MAYBE ALUMINUM) AND JUST BROKE. THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN ANY CRASH. THERE IS NO REASON WHY THE BOLTS BROKE, BUT IT COULD HAVE REALLY PUT MY FAMILY IN JEOPARDY. WHEN I CONTACTED THE DEALER TO SEE IF THERE HAD BEEN ANY RECALLS ON THESE BOLTS, THEY ACTED LIKE I WAS CRAZY AND DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT.

I CONTACTED BMW OF NA WHO ADVISED ME NOT TO USE THE CAR BECAUSE IT WAS DANGEROUS. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO WORK WITH BMW OF NA & BMW DEALERSHIP (PLACE OF PURCHASE) A VAPOR BARRIER LEAK WAS FOUND BUT MORE WAS BELIEVED TO BE AT CAUSE. THE DASH NEEDED TO BE REMOVED, FOR $1800. I REFUSED TO PAY; REQUESTED BMW OF NA TO PAY. REQUEST DENIED. THE DEALER SAID BMW OF NA WOULD ONLY PAY VAPOR BARRIER REPAIR COSTS. I ASKED FOR NO REPAIRS; TOWED THE CAR HOME. FINALLY REACHING LINDA VITALE, EXEC. CUSTOMER SERVICES OF BMW NA, NJ, SHE TOLD ME THE DEALER DID DO THE REPAIRS. THIS WAS AGAINST MY EXPRESSED WISHES. I WANTED THE CAR INVESTIGATED ELSEWHERE TOO. IN A LATER CONVERSATION, [XXX] CLAIMED THE REASON FOR THE WATER WAS FROM A LEAK FROM A 3RD PARTY WINDSHIELD INSTILLATION. FOR NEARLY THE ENTIRE TIME I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE CAR JERKING AND LURCHING WHILE ACCELERATING IN THE LOWER RPM RANGES. OF LATE THIS HAS BECOME SO BAD I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE PROBLEM MANIFESTS ITSELF MOSTLY BETWEEN 1,800 AND 2,400 RPM WITH THE MOST SEVERE ISSUES IN THE 2,200 TO 2,400 RPM RANGE. WHEN GOING FROM A STOP THE CAR WILL BEGIN TO ACCELERATE AND WHEN IT GETS JUST ABOVE 2,000 RPM IT BEGINS TO JERK AND LURCH WITH THE TACHOMETER FLUCTUATING WILDLY. I WAS INFORMED BY AN INDEPENDENT BMW REPAIR SHOP THAT THE REAR SPRINGS WERE BROKEN. A SUBSEQUENT VISIT TO A BMW DEALER CONFIRMED THIS. I WAS ALSO INFORMED BY BOTH THE INDEPENDENT SHOP AND THE DEALER THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 3 SERIES BMWS. BMW OF NORTH AMERICA TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS NOT AN ITEM THAT WOULD BE COVERED UNDER THEIR CPO WARRANTY OR ANY OTHER WARRANTY. I WOULD THINK THAT BROKEN SPRINGS WOULD AFFECT HANDLING AND THEREFORE CONSTITUTE A SAFETY HAZARD. MY BRAKES FAILED. I WAS AT A STOPLIGHT ON A SIDE STREET. WITH 3 OTHER CARS IN FRONT OF ME, THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND I PROCEEDED TO STEP ON THE GAS PEDAL. AS I PICKED UP SPEED, THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME STARTED TO BRAKE AS THERE WERE PEDESTRIANS AND OTHER TRAFFIC. I WENT TO APPLY MY BRAKES AND THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN OR STOP. I VERED TO THE RIGHT TO AVOID REAR-ENDING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AND STARTED TO PUMP MY BRAKE PEDAL. IT STILL WAS NOT SLOWING THE CAR. I NOTICED THE BRAKE PEDAL FELT HARD AS I TRIED TO PRESS IT DOWN. I APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AS I MOVED OFF THE ROAD AND ONTO THE SHOULDER. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I WAS TOLD THE VACUUM PUMP FAILED. THEY DID CHECK THE BRAKE LINE, BRAKE FLUIDS AND NOTED THERE WERE NO LEAKS. THE VACUUM PUMP JUST FAILED WITH NO WARNING. NO INDICATOR OR WARNING LIGHT CAME ON TO WARN ME OF ANY EMERGENCY OR SAFETY ISSUE. THIS IS IN A 2008 BMW 328I WITH ONLY 54000 MILES. *JS

I NOTICED WATER ON THE GARAGE FLOOR ABOUT A WEEK AGO AND THAT THE COOLANT WAS LOW. I TOOK IT TO BMW DEALER EXPECTING A RADIATOR LEAK. I WAS TOLD THAT ALL 4 ALUMINUM SUPPORT BOLTS HAD BEEN SHEARED AND THAT THE ENGINE WAS RESTING ON THE WATER PUMP CAUSING THE LEAK. THIS VEHICLE IS A BMW X3 3.0SI. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN FIRST GEAR, THERE IS A SEVERE HESITATION IN THE TRANSMISSION. WHEN YOU TRY TO ACCELERATE, THE TRANSMISSION "THINKS" ABOUT WHAT GEAR IT SHOULD BE IN. THE VEHICLE HESITATES, STALLS SLIGHTLY, AND CREEPS ALONG SLOWLY BEFORE SECOND GEAR CATCHES. MY BMW X3 2008 WAS 'BOUGHT BACK' BY BMW AFTER THREE MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP IN DEC 2008 DUE TO A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT RESPOND WHEN DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR AT RANDOM TIMES. IT HAPPENED ONCE AFTER PULLING AWAY FROM AN EZPASS BOOTH - THE CAR JUST FROZE AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE NEARLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THIS WAS SO SERIOUS THAT BMW RECOGNIZED IT AS A PROBLEM BUT COULD NOT FIX IT DESPITE REPLACING MAJOR TRANSMISSION PARTS. THEY ASSURED ME IT WAS NOT A GENERAL PROBLEM IN X3'S SO I ALLOWED THEM TO REPLACE THE 2008 X3 WITH A 2009 MODEL. THE TIRES FOR THIS CAR ARE SPECIAL TIRES WITH PRESSURE MONITORS TO INDICATE WHEN THEY ARE LOW ON PRESSURE OR FLAT. I'VE ONLY PUT 6500 MILES ON THE CAR AND DRIVEN IT WITH A LOT OF CARE UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. THE SERVICE CENTER IS SAYING I INFLICTED THE DAMAGE AND THEY WANT ME TO PAY FOR IT. GO HERE FOR THE ENTIRE STORY: WWW.BMWFIRE.COM I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2008 BMW 328I FOR $38,000 FROM SONNEN BMW IN SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA. THE CAR HAD A SERIOUS MANUFACTURERS DEFECT THAT CAUSED AN ELECTRICAL FIRE AND RESULTED IN MY CAR BEING TOTALED. I HAD MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THE FRONT PASSENGERS SIDE FOG LIGHT FALLING OUT OF ITS CASING INTO THE LOWER CORNER OF THE BUMPER WHICH CAUSED THREE SEPARATE FIRES. BMW HAS REFUSED TO REPLACE MY VEHICLE THAT HAD 11,500 MILES AND IS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. AT THE END OF JUNE 2008 I FIRST REALIZED THIS PROBLEM HAPPENED UPON A CLOSER INSPECTION OF THE EXTERIOR OF THE CAR. I BROUGHT THE CAR RIGHT AWAY TO SONNEN BMW'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT, AS I WAS WORRIED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE. I SHOWED THEM WHAT HAPPENED, BUT THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD NO AVAILABLE APPOINTMENTS UNTIL TWO WEEKS OUT AND THAT MY CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. TWO WEEKS LATER I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO SONNEN'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THEY "VERIFIED THE DEFECT" AS STATED IN THEIR SERVICE RECORDS. THEY REPLACED THE COMPLETE FRONT BUMPER AND SUPPOSEDLY RE SECURED THE FOGLIGHT. ALL OF THIS WAS COVERED UNDER BMW'S WARRANTY AS IT WAS A MANUFACTURES DEFECT. I ASKED TOM MURTHA (MY SERVICE ADVISOR) WHY THIS HAD HAPPENED, HE TOLD THAT BECAUSE THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO IMPACT DAMAGE, THE ONLY WAY THIS COULD HAVE OCCURRED WAS A MISTAKE WHEN BUILDING THE VEHICLE AT THE FACTORY. I THOUGHT ALL OF MY PROBLEMS WERE SOLVED UNTIL A FOGGY DAY IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. ON OCTOBER 25TH, 2008 AT APPROXIMATELY 4:00 PM. WHILE WAITING AT A STOPLIGHT I TURNED ON MY FOG LIGHTS AT THE INTERSECTION OF FRONT & BROADWAY (ASSUMING THAT THE FOGLIGHT HAD BEEN SECURED). IT WAS FOGGY OUT AND MY PASSENGER AND I COULD NOT SEE THE SMOKE THAT WAS COMING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE FOG LIGHT BECAUSE OF A SMALL FIRE IT CAUSED. I WAS MADE AWARE OF THIS WHEN A PEDESTRIAN WALKED UP TO MY CAR AND ALERTED ME THAT THERE WAS A FIRE. I PULLED OVER RIGHT AWAY AND I DUMPED THE CONTENTS OF A LARGE WATER BOTTLE ON THE FLAME. *TR

I TOOK THE VEHICLE FOR THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS: 1.) LONG(ER) CRANK 2.) ENGINE MALFUNCTION, REDUCED POWER 3.) SERVICE ENGINE SOON 4.) HEAVY, ERRATIC SHAKING AND SHUDDERING 5.) ENGINE SOUNDED LIKE A UNION PACIFIC TRAIN WITH LOUD PUMPING SOUND 6.) BECAUSE OF 4 + 5, DECIDE TO TURN-OFF THE ENGINE OR SOMETIMES IT JUST STALLS BEFORE 7.) AFTER RESET, THE CAR BECOMES DRIVABLE BUT SYMPTOMS WILL REOCCUR. 8.) ABLE TO RECREATE PROBLEM WHEN I MASH THE GAS AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON AN AUTO FORUM, I SUSPECTED THAT THE CAUSED OF THE PROBLEM WAS A FAILING HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP. THE DEALERSHIP KEPT THE CAR FOR 3 DAYS TO RUN SOME TESTS AND CONCLUDED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS THE PROBLEM. SINCE THEY REPLACE THE PART, THE CAR HAS NOT BROKEN DOWN AGAIN. HOWEVER, THEY INTRODUCE ANOTHER PROBLEMS. 1) THE CAR'S EXHAUST NOISE IS MUCH LOUDER NOW 2) THE CAR IS LESS FUEL EFFICIENT, LOWER MILES PER GALLON 3) THE CAR NOW HAS A TURBO LAG WHICH WAS PREVIOUSLY NON-EXISTENT. THIS MEANS BMW IS FALSELY ADVERTISING THE 335I TWIN-TURBO HAS ZERO LAG. THIS WAS TRUE BEFORE THEY UPDATED THE CAR'S SOFTWARE BUT IS NOT LONGER TRUE AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME. *TR
